What is the difference between lateral tee and

True WYE?

 Industry News
 News

Sometimes the angle between the pipe and the main pipe is not 90 degrees, it may be 45°
or other degrees, then we should use a lateral pipe fitting to design it.

Type of the lateral pipe fittings:

Lateral pipe fittings have two types: lateral tee and latrolet (also called Lateral Outlet).

The lateral tee’s shape is like a pipe tee, the butt welding lateral tees are made from steel
pipes or forgings, the manufacturing standard is ASME B16.9. there are also the forged
lateral tee produced refer to ASME B16.11,the ends are socket welding and threaded.

What is a lateral tee?

A Lateral tee is one kind of tee fittings, which has a 45 degree branch from a pipeline: (45°
Lateral Tee). It is a kind of steel pipe tee, but the branch direction is different with the
straight tee. On the contrary to the lateral tee,the straight tee has a branch pipe direction
of 90 degree to the run pipe.

APPLICATIONS OF LATERAL TEES:

lateral tees are widely used in various commercial and industrial applications. Industrial
applications include:

 Chemical processing
 Petroleum
 Pulp/paper
 Refining
 Textile

 Waste treatment, Marine

 Utilities/power generation
 Industrial equipment
 Automotive
 Gas compression and distribution industries
 Pipe Tees are also recommended for industrial plant fluid power systems.

What are True WYES?

Pipe wyes are used to to allow one pipe to join another pipe at some degree or angle. As
the name suggests, the pipe wyes are Y-shaped pipe fitting devices. They are a popular
type of pipe fitting used in various industrial applications.

Pipe wyes and pipe tees:

Pipe wyes are similar to pipe tees. The only difference is in that the branch line is angled
to reduce friction which could hamper the flow. The pipe connection is typically at a
45-degree angle rather than a usual 90-degree angle. If a branch turns out at the end to
be perpendicular to the through line, the pipe fitting becomes a “tee wye”.

Materials used:
There are various materials used in the making of wyes. They are as follows:

 Carbon steel
 Stainless steel
 Iron
 Copper
 Monel
 Nickel
 Titanium
 Zirconium
 Plastic
 Rubber etc.

Buying Tips

Certain factors that are to be considered for the purchase of pipe wyes are as follows:

 Pipe and Tube Sizes

 Wall Thickness
 Materials
 Degree of Branch: 30, 45, and 60
 Finishing
 Durability
 Corrosion resistant

Various shapes of pipe wyes:

The pipe wyes (in the form of Y) can take various shapes. Below we give a diagrammatic
representation of some pipe wyes.

Standard Pipe Wye Compact Pipe Wye Special Pipe Wye

As seen in the above figures, the first one is a standard pipe wye, exactly in the shape of
the alphabet “Y” in a horizontal position.

The second is a pipe wye in a vertical position with three branches. The third one is a
special type of pipe wye in the shape of a standard tee with a 45°bend and particularly
recommended to be used in large-diameter piping.

What is the difference between lateral tee and True WYE?

the lateral tee divide two branch pipes:one is same direction with the inflow pipe, the other
have a 45 degree angle to inflow pipe. The WYE have two branch pipes at a 45 degree
angle between them, and the two branch pipes are symmetrical to the centerline of the
inflow pipe which means the two outflow direction are both at 22.5 degree to the inflow
direction.
Comparing the two lateral pipe fittings, when the inflow pipe direction is horizontal to the
ground,we can choose the lateral tee for better support from ground, and when the inflow
pipe direction is vertical, then we’d better use the WYE fitting, it will bring a symmetrical
interaction force to the piping system. Such designing will make sure the pipe in a stable
support when running.
