ABSTRACT

Music and literary text have always maintained strong connections in Western
culture. They are arts that can interpenetrate, exchange techniques among
themselves and even merge. One of the ways to merge these two semiotic
systems is the popular song. This work aimed at studying the relations
undertaken between word and music in Brazilian popular song. Therefore, we
chose the works of Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque , two fundamental
composers in the history of MPB ( Brazilian Popular Music), for having
expanded the possibilities of articulation between the system of verbal and
musical signs.

Out of all the songs they composed we selected three (“Retrato em Branco e
Preto”, "Imagina" and "Sabiá"), by the fact that in them the relation between
lyrics and melody proved more patent. We have taken as basis the studies of
Solange Ribeiro de Oliveira on melopoetics, and especially the semiotic of the
song , theory raised by the musician and professor Luiz Tatit. The theories
used allowed us to understand the meaning construction of the speech of the
two composers more cohesive and comprehensive. This is because, in our
analysis, we contemplate both the linguistic and musical elements, we
understand that reading a text of a song out of its musical structure may
generate effects of meaning different from when we listen to it with all its
components. From the analytical hearing of the selected songs and
bibliographical research, we realized that the work of Tom Jobim and Chico
Buarque is guided by a strict connection between word and music, which
generates an aesthetic organicity, a homogeneous stylistic result.

Furthermore, they are compositions which dialogue intensely with the modern
Brazilian literature, especially with regard to the use of colloquialisms and
prosaisms, the search for simplicity, the use of a more concise and visual
language and the insertion of irony and parody.
