Historical and cultural heritage values – Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO
Cultural - historical heritage of the Old Town of Sarajevo is the most prominent and the most
valuable part of the preserved culture, tradition and human architecture through the ages in
this area. These include: historical memorial complex and memorials, populated areas,
archaeological zones, military fortifications, residential buildings, public buildings, commercial
buildings, places of worship and cemeteries and tombstones and certainly they are unavoidable
historical and cultural values of city Sarajevo. Religious buildings have been always emphasized
by its strength, beauty and originalityof all four religious confessions (Islam, Catholicism,
Orthodoxy and Judaism).

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque


Gaza Husrev-beg mosque or just Beg's Mosque in Sarajevo is because of their size and
attractiveness one of the most sacred monuments of Islamic architecture in the Balkans. It was
built in 1530. The mosque is an endowment of Gazi Beg, ruler of Bosnian Sandžak. It was
designed by Ayem Athir Ali of Tibris, one of Istanbul's greatest architects and constructed by
the Dubrovnik masters. One of the architectural values are that mosque is squared in shape,
with a dome diameter of 13m and a height of 26m. Next to it is smaller dome and semi-dome.
The interior of the mosque radiates singular artistic atmosphere. Next to the mosque is a
fountain, whose water is used for ritual washing before prayer. Today's shape with a dome
dates from 1893. year. Beg's mosque represents an object of great importance for the urban
development of Sarajevo and one of the most important buildings of the rich heritage of Gazi
Husrev-beg.
Hans (Hanovi) and caravan-sarais (karavan saraji)
They were used for both passengers and goods. Caravanserai are offered a complimentary
three-night stay. In Sarajevo, was the 1878. fifty hans, of which 45 just in the city. The most
famous are Morić han, han Kolobara, Tašlihan han, etc. Morić han was built with funds Gaza
Husrefbeg Waqf in late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Its capacity amounted to 300
beds. The name was given by tenants of han, brothers Morić. For many years it was the center
of political and social life of artisans, merchants and learned men. Morić Han is the only
preserved one, caravanserai in BiH. In addition to these facilities are known others, such as:
Gazi Beg's Hamam, Clock Tower, covered markets (shops), tambourine (storeroom), etc.

KONJIC
Stećci (tombstones)
Cultural and historical heritage of the municipality of Konjic is extremely rich, particularly
monuments from the Middle Ages, ie necropolis and fortifications, and the remains of medieval
towns and religious buildings, bygone empires and the latest material and written remains.
Stećaks, Bosnian tombstones, are the most powerful cultural and artistic phenomenon of
medieval Bosnia, one marker of time and space. Konjic is one of the municipalities with the
highest number of necropolis in Bosnia and Herzegovina and even in the region. Unfortunately,
many sites are often on extremely strategic positions in scientific terms they are extremely
important, but difficult to be accessed.
MOSTAR

Thinking about Mostar, and instinctively do not imagine picture of the beautiful Old Bridge, is
almost impossible, especially knowing that this is a masterpiece of stone monument on which
the town was named, and who, symbolically, carries many meanings . The construction of the
bridge began in the Ottoman period, Turkish architect Hayruddin by order of Sultan Suleiman
the Magnificent and ended after nine years of work, in 1566. Immediately after „birth“ , the
bridge became the subject of many local legends, one of which says that Hayruddin was so
stubborn, that is three days and three nights stayed under the bridge structure to prove how
sturdy bridge is. And the bridge is firmly stood 427 years , until the 1993., the tragic year in
which the bombing of the bridge, wasn't representing only the strategic goal of military policy,
but also a cruel way to crash into the heart of the symbol of beauty and civic unity. Work on the
reconstruction of the bridge lasted several years and represented the huge undertaking
because it was decided to renew the bridge construction by the techniques of the sixteenth
century, using the same method of connecting and approximate cuts stone , in order to obtain
certain imperfections uniqueness of the old bridge .
World's organization UNESCO has established an international team of experts to initate the
reconstruction of Old bridge, restoration of the Tara and Halebinovka buildings, Sultan Selim
mosques and other buildings in the monumental complex. After renovation, the Old Bridge was
officially opened 2004th , and the World Heritage Committee is 17.07. 2005 entered the area of
the Old Bridge , with Old town of Mostar on the World Heritage List of UNESCO! With the
"renaissance" of the Old Bridge and its surroundings, the symbolic power and meaning of
Mostar - as an exceptional and universal symbol of coexistence between communities from
different cultural, ethnic origin, religious - is reinforced and strengthened, with emphasis on the
unlimited efforts of human solidarity for peace and cooperation in the face of power with
severe disaster...
TREBINJE
Church of St. Elijah
Church of St. Elijah is placed at the top of the Elijah's hill (Elijah's head) in the village Mesari,
north of the main road of Trebinje - Mostar. It is located on the rim of Popov's fields, 20
kilometers west of Trebinje. Church of St. Elijah is triple conch, which is repeatedly repaired.
The last time of its repairement, according to the inscription on the beam, it was the 1897th
year.
This church has pre - roman stylish character, and it is considered likely that the original
church was built in the period from IX to XI century. It belongs among the oldest structures in
Herzegovina. Church of St. Elijah with a bunch of prehistoric burial (tumulus) and a necropolis
with the tombstones was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008.
