The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Of all the wonders that exist in our walk with God, perhaps the most wonderful truth concerning the New Covenant is
the fact that Christians are actually the dwelling place of God. Whereas in the old covenant God dwelt in the physical
temple building, in this new covenant that we live in, He has chosen to make man His dwelling place.
Secondary to the Salvation experience, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the experience wherein the Christian
surrenders their life to the Holy Spirit that He in return may fill, and manifest Christ through the Christian, through the
fruit of the Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit, and power for ministry. While Salvation through faith in Christ saves us from sin
and the condemnation of hell, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit equips us to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ with
boldness, power, and demonstration of the miraculous.
This is not water baptism, where a believer in Christ expresses their commitment to follow Him, nor is this the Baptism
OF the Holy Spirit (1Cor 12:13) where the Holy Spirit joins the new believer to the larger corporate Body of Christ. But
rather the Baptism IN the Holy Spirit, where the believer in Christ is baptized (or immersed ) in the Holy Spirit.
In this Bible study, we take an in-depth look at the many references made by Jesus concerning this experience, and
also the experiences of the first century Christians as recorded in the book of Acts.

(The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is mentioned in all 4 gospels!)

John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Then all the land of
Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. Now
John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he
preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and
loose. I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1 :4-8

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not
worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matt 3:11

According to these verses, WHO baptizes with the Holy Spirit? ________

"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who
asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among
you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he
offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" Luke 11:9-13

According to the very last line in this passage, How does one receive the Holy
Spirit?____________________________________
Who is the giver of the Holy Spirit? ___________________

So we see that Jesus is the mediator of this wonderful Gift from Father.
Also, we need not fear receiving anything counterfeit or evil when we sincerely ask the Father for the Holy Spirit.

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." But this He spoke concerning
the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet
glorified. John 7:37-39

Here we read a very insightful analogy from the mouth of Jesus regarding the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Jesus compares
the receiving of the Holy Spirit to a thirsty person coming for a drink, who, after drinking has rivers of living water flow
out of their heart.
In like manner, when we come to God with a thirst for Him,(thirst is a prerequisite, we must hunger and thirst for the
things of God) and we drink in (or receive) the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit fills our innermost being and then, like a river,
He flows out of us to bring the life and refreshment of Jesus Christ to a hungry and thirsty world.

"If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide
with you forever-- The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you
know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14 :15-17

List all the facts we learn from Jesus about the Holy Spirit’s ministry in this
passage____________________________________________________________________________________________
____

Lets take a closer look at the last part of this verse. Jesus says to the apostles “but you know Him, for He dwells with you
and will be in you.” Was Jesus saying this to a bunch of unbelievers or to a bunch of believers?
Jesus was speaking this passage to a group of people who believed that He was the Messiah, who worked miracles in
His name, and gave up their lives to follow Him. Yet He is telling them “You are not yet filled with the Holy Spirit, He is
now with you, He is active in your life, but the time is yet to come when He will live inside of you in all His fullness”
What might the difference be between those who the Holy Spirit is with and those in whom He is in?

This would seem to indicate that there are Christians today who have placed their faith in Jesus for salvation, who love
Him and who may even be in ministry, who have not yet received the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow
those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; They will take up serpents; and if
they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:15-18

According to these verses, who will the signs follow?__________________________

Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on
high." Luke 24:49

According to this verse, when the Promise of the Father comes, what are the disciples to be endued
with?________________________

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of
the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the
Holy Spirit not many days from now." Acts 1:4-5

To Baptize means to “immerse” or “overwhelm”. If when baptized in water, one is dunked under the water, we can
get a picture of how fully we are to be immersed and overwhelmed in the Holy Spirit

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all
Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Acts 1:8

What is the reason for the power? To be_________________________.

Why do witnesses need power? Because Jesus Himself needed the power of the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel, and He
knew that we would need the same power.

John 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than
these he will do, because I go to My Father.

It takes power to do the works of Jesus; to preach the gospel, to heal sick people, to cast out demons, to work
miracles, and to show to the people of the world that the God of the Christians is more powerful than all of their false
gods.
All of the power we will ever need for ministry is found in the Holy Spirit.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from
heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance Acts 2:1-4

What was the manifestation common to all of those present?_______________________________

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to
them, Who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon

none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the
Holy Spirit. Acts 8:14-17

Here are some people living in Samaria who had received the word of God, and had been baptized in the name of the
Lord Jesus, but had not yet received the Holy Spirit.
How did they go on to receive the Holy
Spirit?_____________________________________________________________________________________________
_____________

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the
circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured
out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, "Can anyone forbid
water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" And he commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
Acts 10 :44-48

What evidence did Peter and those with him see that convinced them that these people had just received the Holy Spirit?

And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And
finding some disciples He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have
not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said,
"Into John's baptism." Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they
should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues
and prophesied

If you are ready, you may receive the Holy Spirit right now.

Prayer to receive the Holy Spirit:

“Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your great love for us. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to die on the cross
that we may be forgiven of our sins and live with you forever. And I thank You that You promised to send us a Helper, a
Comforter, and a Teacher to help us grow and learn more about You. Today Father, I ask You for the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, thank You for all that you have done for us by Your death on the cross and by Your resurrection. Lord I want to
have as much of Your kingdom in my life as you will give me. Right now Jesus, I ask you to baptize me in the Holy Spirit,
from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet, FILL me with the Holy Spirit right now.”

Now keep your focus on Jesus and take a deep breath, as He fills your entire being with the Holy Spirit. Begin now to
speak praises to God, but not in any language you know, let the utterance from the Holy Spirit come up out of your
mouth in your new prayer language.
