SPECIFICATION ESP-P-6965

PROCESS CHROMATOGRAPHS

1.0 PURPOSE

This specification provides the minimum requirements for Process Analyzers and
Systems.

2.0 SCOPE

The Contractor shall provide gas chromatograph(s), sample probe(s), and all required
sample conditioning for stream(s).Analizer Contractor shall be responsible for
accuracy, adjustability, calibration, performance, range, repeatability, measurement,
resolution, and testing of the supplied system.

Analyzer Contractor will install the sample system(s) and chromatograph(s).


Contractor will install the sample probe(s) will provide and install the sample line
between sample probe(s) and sample system(s).

3.0 CODES AND STANDARDS

3.6 Reference Specifications

ESP-H-2400 Electrical Design Requeriments for Mechanical Equipment.

4.0 GENERAL INFORMATION

4.1 The process chromatograph systems shall be functionally and physically


separated into chromatograph and sample system.

4.2 Each chromatograph including sample conditioning system and local


display will be located in analyzer room.

4.3 The chromatograph shall be connected to the plant Distributed Control


System (DCS).

4.4 Process chromatograph systems shall analyze the content of gas or


liquid process streams. The sample conditioning system shall vaporize
the liquid stream, if needed. The chromatograph should analyze
automatically single or multiple streams and perform automatic
calibrations with appropiate options.

4.5 Type of connections and pressure ratings shall be as specified by the


contractor according with the process.

4.6 Process chromatograph systems shall meet the requirements for range,
accuracy, repeatability, etc. specified (please see point 12.0 )

4.7 Chromatograph shall resolve peaks greater than 0.05% mol with full
baseline separation between components.

4.8 Analysis calculations shall include integration of peak area and


normalization.

4.9 Chromatograph accuracy shall be within ±1% of full scale.

4.10 Chromatograph repeatability shall be ±1/2% span.

4.11 The voltage for all electric operated solenoid valves (where required)
shall be nominal 24 VCD.

4.12 "Column" life shall be a minimum of five years minimum during normal
operation.

4.13 Analyzer time less or equal to 4 minutes

5.0 CHROMATOGRAPH REQUIREMENTS

5.1 Each system shall be completely piped and wired with all necessary
valves, regulators, sample probes, rotameters, etc., as required to make
a completely free-standing unit, also the Contractor will connect incoming
sample lines and utilities as required to put the unit into service.

The system components shall be tagged and configured in conformance


with PID’S.

5.2 The oven shall be equipped with independent temperature controls to


provide a stable operating temperature for the analytical columns and
detection to assure reproducible component analysis.

5.3 The oven shall be protected against overheating due to instrument failure
or malfunction of any kind.

5.4 Detector output signal shall be shielded against common mode noise,
normal mode noise, in addition to RFI and EMI.

5.5 Detector shall be provided with suitable protection to prevent element


damage due to loss of carrier gas.

5.6 An automatic igniter and hydrogen shutoff shall be incorporated in all


flame ionization detectors to protect against flame failure.

5.7 Carrier gas of helium may be used as required by the measured


components.

5.8 The Contractor shall provide a gas cylinder manifold with two-stages
pressure regulation, inlet and outlet pressure gauges, and low pressure
for each carrier and span gas.

5.9 The flow rate of the carrier gas shall be adjustable without shutting the
system down.

5.10 Each analyzer shall to be provided with local indication of the variables
being analyzed at the analyzer unit.

6.0 ANALYZER ROOM

6.1 Analyzer will be located in an analyzer room provided by the contractor.


The room will not be air-conditioned. The analyzer and sample
conditioning system will be protected from direct sun.

6.2 The ambient temperature at the site varies from -10°C to 50°C (24°F to
122°F).

6.3 The analyzer will be located in an area with electrical classification in


acordance with the electrical class area.

6.4 Each analyzer will be allocated 2000 mm of wall space in the room.

7.0 SAMPLE SYSTEM

7.1 This sample system description is one possible design.The Contractor


may submit alternate design for PGPB approval.

7.2 The sample probe shall extend through the tap one third of the pipe
diameter and shall be designed to eliminate solids.

7.3 The sample draw system shall include all filters and devices required for
the sample conditioning. The design shall allow for replacement or
backflushing of clogged filters.

7.4 All sample system materials that contact the process fluid shall be
stainless steel (minimum ).

7.5 All automatic or manual switching valves shall be leakproof and bubble-
tight.

7.6 Flow limiting valves shall be used to restrict flow in the event of a sample
line break. The restrictor capacity shall be less than twice the normal
flow rate.

7.7 Sample transit time, from entry into the probe to entry into the analyzer
shall be less than 90 seconds, of which no more than 30 seconds shall
be required from entry into the probe to entry into the sample
conditioning system.

7.8 The Contractor shall provide all necessary sample conditioning


equipment to condition the sample stream for the chromatograph
analysis.

7.9 The Contractor shall provide all equipment necessary to introduce the
calibration sample into the system. Calibration samples shall be
introduced without disconnecting lines, changing settings or making other
adjustments. The calibration system shall be automatic.

7.10 A valved connection for laboratory samples shall be furnished at the exit
of the sample conditioning system as near to the analyzer as possible.

7.11 The sample transport system shall conform to the requirements That the
manufactured recomended for the system .

8.0 PIPING SYSTEM

8.1 Design shall be in accordance with API (American Petroleum Institute)


RP550 and this specification.

8.2 The Contractor shall review the sample system from the process sample
connection to the analyzer room to assure correct sampling and
satisfactory lag time.

8.3 Any sample line above 65°C (148°F) shall be insulated for personnel
protection.

9.0 SERIAL INTERFACE

Each Analyzer shall be capable of communicating with the plant Distributed


Control System using a serial interface module (RS-232C, RS-422, or RS-
423) and industry standard communication protocols such as Modbus.

10.0 ACCESSORIES

10.1 Accessories shall permit local maintenance and calibration.

10.2 All interconnecting piping ¾-inch size and larger shall be ASTM A53,
Grade B, seamless, Schedule 80 pipe. Smaller connections shall be
ASTM A269, Type 304 seamless tubing, with 316 fittings.

10.3 Chromatographs shall be designed for operation in very hot and dry
environment. Exposed components shall be adequately protected
against corrosion. Internal mechanisms and components shall be
protected against entrance of dirt, dust, and water during shipment,
storage and operation. Seals, gaskets and diaphragms shall be
adequate for long-time storage at temperatures up to 93 degrees
Celsius. Process contact surfaces shall be protected with permanent
corrosion prevention methods.

10.4 All interconnecting wiring shall be numbered at each end.

10.5 All interconnected wiring shall be in compliance with ESP-P-6760.

10.6 All terminal blocks shall be clearly identified and all individual terminals
shall be clearly marked.

10.7 Pipe threads shall be tapered and shall conform to ASME B1.20.1.

11.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING

11.1 The Contractor shall provide a 30 hour operational Factory Acceptance


Test for each analyzer and associated components. Each sample shall
be representative of the samples that the chromatograph will analyse.
PGPB shall be notified four weeks prior to final inspection and test.

11.2 If, upon arrival of the PGPB Inspector, the tests have not been
performed, the Contractor shall be liable for back-charges for time and
expense of the PGPB Inspector's visit.

11.3 The Contractor shall allocate adequate time, space, facilities, and
assistance to permit inspection and testing to the satisfaction of PGPB
Inspector. The Contractor shall provide technicians and materials, as
required, to make measurements and connections the Inspector deems
necessary to assure that all functions and accuracies are according to

specifications. Test instruments and equipment, test leads, temporary


wiring, tools, etc. shall be made available by the Contractor, as required,
to permit 100 percent inspection and testing of each unit. All the above
items are to remain the property of the Contractor.

11.4 All of the aforementioned facilities, assistance equipment, materials, and


arrangements shall be provided at no additional charge to PGPB.

12.0 SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR CHROMATOGRAPH OF DUCTS

12.1 Specification of Chromatograph

a) Repetibility of +/- 0.5 BTU/1000 BTU.


b) Appropiate for operation in ambient temperature of –10 to 50 °C.
c) Total time of analysis ≤4 min (including calculation and time of
having purged).
d) Micropacked columns waranted for 5 years (minimum) under nornal
operating conditions for reduce carrier gas consumptions.
e) To give with filter type membrane, regulator of pressure, multiple
valves in advance of life of 5 million operations of stainless steel
316.
f) 2 cylinders of carrier gas will be included (helium degree zero) with
included regulator, with manifold to allow the substitution without the
process interruption.
g) Cylinder of reference gas will be included (calibration gas) with
composition according to the sample to analyze.
h) The power supply shall be 127 VAC, 60 Hz.

12.2 Controller specification

a) The controller shall consists of a 32 bits microprocessor, speed of


16 MHz.
b) Capacity of storage of 64 averages runs configurability for hour, day
or week.Storage of 1200 analysis runs and 400 calibration runs.
c) It will have battery back for memory RAM.
d) It will have 4 serial ports and 1 parallel.
e) Shall be provided with analogical and digital inputs/outputs.
f) Modem will be included configurability totally.
g) The controller will be provided assembling and wired in rack and it
will have display and keyboard.

13.0 START-UP AND TRAINING

The contractor will provide attendance during the start-up and to


provide all the necessary tools and equip required.
The contractor will impart training for the operation, maintenance and
configuration of the chromatograph.

14-0 DOCUMENTATION

14.1 Each analyzer system shall be furnished with a separate Operation and
Maintenance Manual indexed by instrument tag number. Documentation
shall include the following as a minimum:

14.1.1 Stream data and physical properties.


14.1.2 System drawings from sample supply/return.
14.1.3 Physical location of all major system components.
14.1.4 Start-up and shutdown procedure for each system.
14.1.5 Calibration procedures (in Spanish and English )
14.1.6 Calibration data/curves
14.1.7 Calibration sample specifications.
14.1.8 Maintenance and troubleshooting procedure for each system.
14.1.9 Operation and Maintenance manuals (In Spanish and English ).
14.1.10 Acceptance test certifications
14.1.11 Piping drawings including supply and return point information.
14.1.12 Fabrication drawings (as applicable).
14.1.13 Electric interconnection wiring drawings.
14.1.14 Instrument Data Sheets which include detector settings,
chromatograms showing components separations, and all flow
rates, temperatures and pressures required to verify analyzer
operation.
14.1.15 Spare parts for two year´s operation.

The contractor will annex together with his technical offer the following
information

a) Catalog to verify proposed model


b) List of spare parts for 2 years of operation.
