Women’s Rights Cluster Map

Purpose: To gather more historical information about the rights and restrictions of
women during the 19th century in order to better understand the central character’s
perspective in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”

Directions

For this graphic organizer, you will gather information about important benchmarks in
women’s history and create two distinct cluster maps based on the new historical
information, using the Popplet presentation tool with a partner.

1.) First, go online and browse the Digital History timeline website of important moments
during American history based on women’s rights using the URL Women's Rights Digital
History

2.) Read all of the information provided in the descriptions of each significant year
provided. Take notes regarding which restrictions or rights you deem to be most
important. The decision on which rights or restrictions you think are most important is
strictly based on your own opinion. You may consider creating a ranking list of which
years on the timeline you think were most important to the advancement of women’s
rights. Create separate lists for the time periods 1800-1850 and 1850-1900.

3.) Once you have completed your notes, register for a free account on Popplet. Click on
the make new popplet option. Title it with your first and last name, example “Chris Shaw
“Women’s Rights Cluster Map”, then create.

4.) You need to create two separate clusters, with the left cluster central bubble written
“Restrictions and rights for women from 1800-1850,” and the central bubble for the right
side of the page written “Restrictions and rights for women from 1850-1900”. You will
need to develop 5 to 6 cluster bubbles around each of the two separate central clusters.
So there will be a minimum of 5 cluster bubbles around the central bubbles.

5.) In each bubble, write brief 5 to 10 word descriptions of the rights or restrictions. Each
bubble is required to have one relevant image displayed in each bubble. In order to
attach an image to an individual bubble, first download or drag an image from a creative
commons image page (use Wikimedia Commons or Clip-Art.com as sources), then click
on the “upload things” button located at the bottom right corner of the bubble. Then open
your downloaded image from your computer and it should be displayed inside the bubble.
You can then make necessary size adjustments to establish a polished appearance.

6.) Once you have completed your two distinct clusters and satisfied with the map, go the
right side of the page and select the option to share your Popplet with the public, save it,
and print it to turn in next class.
