Micrometer

What is a micrometer?
A micrometer is a precision measuring instrument, used to obtain very fine
measurements and available in metric and imperial versions. Metric micrometers typically
measure in 0.01mm increments and imperial versions in 0.001 inches.
Function
the function of a micrometer is to measure the length, depth, and diameter inside and
outside of an object on a specified scale

Micrometers have two scales: a

primary scale, on the barrel or sleeve, and
a secondary scale, on the thimble.
Values are taken from each of these
scales and combined to make the total
measurement

What are the parts of a

micrometer?
Some parts are stationary while others are
movable.
 Ratchet stop
 Thimble
 Frame, Thimble lock
 Spindle, Anvil, and Sleeve
How to use micrometer :
 Clean the anvil and spindle before beginning.

 Hold the object in your left hand and place it

against the anvil.

 Hold the micrometer with your right hand

 Spin the ratchet counter clockwise

 Twist until the spindle is against the object.

 Set the thimble lock while the micrometer is still on the
object.

 Slide out the object carefully

 Write down the measurements before unlocking the

spindle.

Micrometer maintenance and care

 Regularly wipe the circumference of the spindle and both
measuring faces with a dry, lint-free cloth.

 Be careful not to drop your micrometer.

If you have accidentally damaged your micrometer, ensure

that it is inspected for accuracy before taking
measurements.

You may need to recalibrate your micrometer.

 Every so often, or after the micrometer has been in storage for
an extended period, apply a small amount of multi-purpose oil to its
exterior using a lint free cloth to prevent corrosion and rust.

It would also be prudent to oil the internal thread of the micrometer if

the micrometer is used very occasionally or unlikely to be used for
many months.

 Make sure that you store your micrometer in a ventilated

place with low humidity, and ideally at room temperature.
Most micrometers come with a protective storage case to keep
them safe when not in use.

 When not using the micrometer, ensure that there is a gap

between the measuring faces.
If the spindle and anvil are in contact with each other, the
accuracy of the micrometer could be affected.
