The Effects Debate
“You have to show violence the way it is. If you don't show it realistically, then that's
immoral and harmful. If you don't upset people, then that's obscenity.” - Roman Polanski
“How a society channels male aggression is one of the greatest questions as to whether
that society will survive. That's why I am not against violence in the media, I am against
the glorification of immoral violence.” - Dennis Prager
“A lot of people in the movie industry tend to run and hide from it like ostriches. Movie
industry people are definitely in denial right now, but you do become desensitized to
violence when you see it on the screen so often. Let's face it, violence exists for one
reason in movies, and that's to get an effect, create an emotion, sell tickets.” -Madeleine
Stowe
“Exposure to violent electronic media has a larger effect than all but one other well
known threat to public health. The only effect slightly larger than the effect of media
violence on aggression is that of cigarette smoking on lung cancer.” - L. Rowell Huessman
I agree because violence in movies is our filter. We watch other people fight so we don’t have to do it in real life.
I also agree because of what Madeleine Stowe says “create an emotion” this emotion could be that the person
feels violence is a terrible thing and they do not want to partake in the acts.
What messages are being sent by playing violent video games?
The best way to solve a problem is to eliminate the source of the problem.
It is acceptable to immerse yourself in these worlds without questioning whether they are right or wrong.
What impacts upon how much an audience member will take on these messages? What
groups will get a different reading from a text?
Children, being imitative, may copy what they see as they are more likely to learn from the experience in the
game.
Pacifists would have never played the game in the first place as they seen all the violent aspects.
Parents would try to protect their children from the violence in the game best they can.
The development team could go through the game and dim down the violence.
Who is responsible for controlling levels of violence in video games? Who should be?
