Type 3 ports in your Token Ring
LAN? Choose the 16-Port Type 3
MAU or one of the Slim MAUs.
They function as wiring hubs, so
you can create a star wiring
configuration from the main ring to
individual Token Ring
workstations.
Like the IBM 8228 MAUs,
these MAUs feature Ring In (RI)
and Ring Out (RO) connections on
the front panel.
16-Port Type 3 MAU
This MAU provides up to 16
additional ports for high-density
applications and does so without
the need for AC power and the
use of a costly insertion tool for
installation.
Since no AC power is required,
the MAU provides flexibility when
deciding where to locate the
wiring installation, which may
include non-air-conditioned areas,
such as warehouses and closets.
A long-life lithium battery
provides power to a circuit that
allows the manual reset of all lobe
circuits. Simply press a button to
reset the ports. This eliminates the
need for an insertion tool during
installation.

Status LEDs are powered
by the attaching Token Ring
adapters and provide a visual
indication of connect status.
The MAU automatically
detects cable removal and wraps
the RI or RO port, so there’s no
network downtime!
Shielded RJ-45 connectors on
the lobe ports provide support for
UTP or STP 100-ohm cable. Use
UTP cabling for cheaper cabling
costs. Or, use 100-ohm STP
cabling for greater distances.
The MAU operates at 4 or 16
Mbps. No configuration switches
are required.
Choose the mounting method
you prefer—flush or recessed
rackmount, wall- or shelf-
mounted. Rack ears, along with a
RI/RO loopback cable,
are included with the MAU.
Slim MAUs
These ”slim” 8-port Token
Ring MAUs are available with
unshielded (LT2001A) or shielded
(LT2002A) RJ-45, Type 3 modular
jacks.
The passive wiring
concentrators connect up to eight
workstations, at 4 or 16 Mbps, to
your IEEE 802.5 Token Ring

network. They provide physical
and electrical connections,
bringing your workstations
together in a star-shaped
topology. If you need more
connections, you can link
additional Slim MAUs by connec-
ting their RI and RO ports.
As with the 16-port MAU,
there’s no external insertion
tool required for installation. That’s
because the built-in initialization
circuitry does the work—just
press a button to reset the ports.
Also like the LT2060A, there’s no
AC power required. A long-lasting
lithium battery powers a manual
reset function for all lobe circuits.
Each MAU provides insert and
bypass functions automatically.
You can insert a workstation
into the ring at any time just by
connecting its network interface
card to one of the MAU’s lobe
ports. If you unplug the
connection, or if the workstation
becomes inactive, the MAU
automatically bypasses that lobe.
Each Slim MAU comes
completely assembled. Simply
mount it in a standard 19" (48.3-cm)
rack in your wiring closet.
Because they’re only 1 unit (1.75
inches or 4.4 cm) high and 1" (2.5
cm) deep, they require very little
space.
To make lobe connections,
attach one end of each work-
station cable to a lobe port on the
MAU and the other end to the
workstation. To connect MAUs
together, attach the RI port of one
MAU to another MAU’s RO port. Slim MAUs
Once installed, the Slim
MAU operates unattended.
For simplified diagnostics and
network troubleshooting, the
MAU features nine LEDs,
including eight per-lobe-port
indicators that show when a node
