works as a virtual resistor, just like the resistors of the improved
bridge-type FCL, limiting the fault current to an acceptable
level.
In 2005, a prototype FCL-SMES of 100 kJ/20 kVA was made
by IEE, and it was tested at the laboratory. Fig. 9 shows the
overview of the prototype device and Figs. 10, 11 shows the test
results of the FCL-SMES. The test results show that this device
can successfully compensate the voltage sags and limit the fault
current.

VI. SUMMARY
In last few years, there is a significant progress on the R&D
of HTS power application in China, demonstrators of cables,
FCL, transformers and SMES have been successfully made and
tested, and FCL, HTS Power Cable and Transformer have been
operated at live substations. Demonstrations show the prototype
apparatus are able to serve for the distribution grid successfully.
