1. Absolutely. Hearing Sam play badly conveyed his hurt and anger perfectly. In Dear John it was the
usual stuff so Avesta marks. In American Beauty I didn't notice!

The right music was used for each clip

Yes it sets the tone of the scene in each movie

1/14/2018 1:18 PM

Have to say I didn’t really notice the music in the first and last clip but the second is a classic and
works well. The words in the song ‘As Time Goes By’ evoke the period the movie was filmed.

1/14/2018 1:11 PM

Because it fitted the mood of the scene

1/14/2018 1:04 PM

The background music in "Dear John" helped add to the sadness that was intended for the audience
to feel about the split between characters.

1/12/2018 11:30 AM

It reinforced the feeling expressed

1/11/2018 10:51 PM

The non-diagetic music can always be impactful. However the most important sound effect used was
the diagetic sounds of the out-of-tune piano played in the first clip. This was the most impactful.

1/11/2018 4:23 PM

In Casablanca, the music is a recognisable song which sparks an emotional reaction in the character,
which makes it effective. Also, because Sam is hesitant to play it, we wonder what it might be. The
lack of music in AB allows you to focus on the dialogue and lends an air of naturalism to the scene.

1/11/2018 3:55 PM

Yes

1/11/2018 3:43 PM

1/11/2018 2:28 PM

1/11/2018 10:34 AM

American Beauty and Casablanca are brilliant. Dear John much less so. Far less imaginative and
emotional.
