In American beauty the office lighting was vastly cold toned and gave off that solemn imprisoning
feeling that the main character must have felt being stuck in the same dark job and dark life for so
often. That was really effective to me.

Each scene features very different lighting, although each add to the scene in useful ways. "Dear
John" has an almost sun-bleached effect, and gives off a late summer vibe. "American Beauty" has

1- Lighting is not as noticiable due to the black and white filter. However it has simulated a
resteraunt (or whatever it is) very well. 2- Most of the scenes are outside. The directors have
probably specifically shot these clips whilst it was sunny to produce a happier touch. 3- Same as 1.
Lighting is simulated very well.

Again, the naturalistic lighting in AB makes the scene very believable. The lighting in Casablanca is
used very cleverly to highlight the actor's faces - Bogart often walks through shadows so that his face
becomes lit.
