304 Slaughter Ave, Dallas, TX 75214
Introduction

In this super fun project I was instructed on designing a house

that would fit on a lot near Woodrow. The address of this empty lot is
304 Slaughter Ave, Dallas, TX 75214. The constraints we had were very
micro. First we had an unlimited budget to work with so the sky was
the limit. Second the lot has a dimension of 100 feet by 50 feet so we
had to keep Dallas’ building codes in thought when it came to design.
The biggest architectural style I had a big influence on my design was
modern due to the stunning sharp edges and clean designs played an
important factor in how I designed my house.
Site analysis

The site itself showed true potential for something beautiful to be

created. On my site opportunities map I noted that the wind usually
comes from the south-southwest, also the sun rises in the east which
will hit the back side of the property and will set in the west which is
visible through the front of the property. Extreme temperatures can
reach to about 98°f and can reach as low as 24°f. The terrain of the lot
wasn’t very flat it did slope down on the left side and towards the
street (the front side) as well. There were also 2 or 3 trees on the site in
the back of the area.
Site Plan

There will be a 2 story house that takes up a good amount of the lot up but
not taking up valuable backyard space which will be valuable for events in the
future. The sides of the house don’t have very much space to prevent wondering
students from the surrounding schools to trespass into the backyard. I will
remove the trees that are already on the property and replace them with 3 trees
along the backyard and 2 along the right side of the property to give the property
some more privacy from the towering condos that surround it. I will also include
a driveway in the front of the garage which will connect with a sidewalk that leads
to the front door. The house is orientated so that the prevailing winds will hit the
garage first and won’t use a lot of energy to maintain heat in the winter. There
will be a balcony on the 2nd floor that will face the street and will be covered by
the roof.
Floor plan analysis
As you enter the house the very first room is the foyer which is meant to be a place of comfort
for the client.
Passing the foyer, you see the dining room which is wood floored ad is big and grand for family occasion
If you keep going straight you will see through an opening the kitchen which has tiled floors and is
accompanied with a French refrigerator several wall and base cabinets, and on the other side of the
kitchen you have your cooking area which is made up of a stove top with a wall oven on one side and a
microwave on the other also there is a small table to dine alone or with another while enjoying the
outside view
To the right of the dining room you will see a door which leads to a bathroom that doesn’t have a
shower and should only be used for doing your business
And to the left your introduced to the living room along which has a carpet finish with the stair case that
leads to the second floor. In the living room we have carpet that covers the entire living room and a
total of 2 sofas for family seating and relaxing and a total of 6 fixed windows so ambient sunlight can
flood the living room to save electricity.
As you go up the stair case it’ll take you to the 2 nd floor living room which is spacious and you see
various doors

the door to the far left leads to the master bedroom which has a lot of room and is very spacious it
consists of a bed and a dresser, along with a door that leads into the lavish master bedroom bathroom
that consists of tile a 2 sink vanity and a tub/ shower also directly across the room there is a slide door
that leads to the balcony which is small and personal and you’re able to see the sun set in the west from
it---
The door closest to the master bedroom leads to the 2 nd bedroom also a carpet finish that has a closet
and a door that leads to the front side balcony as well.
Adjacent to the 2nd bedroom is the 3rd bedroom that is the smallest bedroom out of all the 3 and has
several windows for sunlight to pour through along with a closet.
Next to the 3rd bedroom is a small closet used for storage to store any items the client may want to
store.
The last room is an office/ work space that has a window to let sunlight in that will help the client work
in natural sunlight Which also has a door that leads to the back balcony which sees the entire backyard
LEED Credits

Sustainable design is when a design reduces the negative impact on the

environment & human health, careful consideration is given to water, energy,
building materials, and solid waste. I hoped to incorporate a lot of windows into
my design so sunlight can pour into the house to save energy on lighting without
minimizing privacy for the customer/ homeowner. I believe my home applies for a
“SS” credit because I placed my home near a school on a lot and It took up most
of that lot. I leave little space of the property due to my house being large. I think
my house should be awarded this credit because compared to the neighboring
houses who’s take up a small margin of their entire property. Another credit my
house applies for is a “WE” credit because my house is outfitted with water saving
toilets shower heads, and faucets to prevent water from being wasted. My
structure should be given the credits because it meets and surpasses the
requirements.
Universal Design

My house design can identify 2 principles of universal design. One of which

is flexibility in use because my driveway is essentially a ramp and the sidewalk
that leads to the front door is a ramp as well so people who are disabled can
easily get in and out of the house. Also throughout my house there’s a wide
variety of door handles on either side, some doors have the handle on the right
while others have it on the left. This is another example of how my house
demonstrates “Flexibility in use”. Another universal design my house
demonstrates is “Low physical effort”. Throughout my house design I have
included doors with door handles that will open with ease and can be
accomplished with little to no physical effort. I believe these universal designs are
imperative for a house because everyone deserves to enjoy their house no matter
what their physique is. My grandmother who has severe knee problems has
trouble walking so I don’t want anyone else struggling to get from place to
another let alone in their house.
Foundation Cost

The total cost of the foundation will be a total of $1,1748.97 The

concrete being a total of $10,363.27, and the rebar being a total of
$1,385.70. Calculating the cost of these factors wasn’t hard to do
thanks to my house having even dimensions with no decimals so I
didn’t have to do any extensive calculations. If the customer wanted to
actually construct the foundation they would have to take in account
would be the slope of the ground because as I said earlier the ground is
not perfectly leveled it slopes to a degree on the west and south sides
of the property.
Transmission Load calculations

The Total transmission load of the exterior of the house was calculated
using the variables that Revit gave us. My exterior walls were brick since it has a
nice finish. And here in Texas our temperatures can be very confusing ranging
from a high of 98 degrees to a low of 24 degrees. I didn’t have a budget so I
picked out some very good materials such as putting 3 1/2” of insulation
throughout the entire exterior walls. The total transmissions load of the house
was 40,980.42 Btu/hr. The walls had a transmission load of 1,515.57But/hr., the
windows had a transmission load of 4,739.41 Btu/hr., and the roof having a
transmission load of 1402.24 Btu/hr., and lastly the doors had a transmission load
of 33,323.20 Btu/hr. The greatest heat loss occurred within the doors. My garage
door sadly lets heat loss easily so that accounted for a majority of the door
transmission load.
Conclusion

In this amazing project I designed an amazing house through Revit which

was at times very confusing. In my book this project was a major success it took
up all the time I had and at times I did not believe that I was going to finish it. I
believe my house could’ve been more detailed for example I could’ve placed
some components in the rooms to add some extra flare. I had some problems
with the second floor and the walls which took me about 2-3 days to finally fix
and perfect. I think my design is very good I’m very proud of it because I put a lot
of hard work into designing tis house. But other than that I had nothing else that
troubled me. In the future I will most definitely make sure to place the exterior
walls first and make sure they’re correct.
