Back in time to a village strip
of variety, bustle and colour
W HEN we’re buffeted by
the winds of progress and
change, it’s often pleasant to look
back on what we used to have
– and the Mt Albert shops have
a history of memories for people
who call this home.
Over the next two decades,
the village is in line for a major
facelift, with hopes for a better
retail mix to help give a strongly-
beating heart to Mt Albert.
Surveys reveal community
concerns about the down-at-the-
heels appearance of a shopping
strip of fading appeal – and a
wish for the variety and style of
Mt Eden village as a model for
the future.
So what was it like back in the
good old days? What did they
have then where there are now
takeaway bars, noodle houses,
liquor stores and cheap import
businesses?
To get an idea of how things
used to be, we sat down with
two members of the Mt Albert
Historical Society, Beverley
Sinclair and Barbara Craig, who
collectively have lived in Mt Albert
for over 80 years.
Barbara, who settled in Allendale
Rd with her family in 1941, can
recall such gems as hanging the
family milk pail from a puka tree,
waiting for the horse-and-cart
milkman to make his rounds.
She has fond memories of
Saturday pictures at the De Luxe
cinema, ice blocks for a penny
and Friday night shopping that
brought locals out in force to the
bustling village shopping centre –
the days of bright coloured lights
hanging from shop fronts in the
lead-up to Christmas and the
local Santa parade.
The arrival of the St Lukes mall
from the early 1970s spelt the
end of the village as Mt Albert’s
prime shopping spot, and the
strip slowly lost its retail appeal.
Back in those early days, the
shopping mix was like any “High
St” blend and it’s difficult 50 or
60 years later pinpointing exactly
when one business set up shop
and another moved on.
On the railway side of the strip
west of Mt Albert Rd, the land
was bare except for the Post
Office, King George V Hall and a
couple of railway houses right up
until the early 60s.
On the other side, the retail
history is deeper - stretching back
to the 20s and 30s – and Hellabys
butcher shop at the corner of
Mt Albert Rd and New North Rd
was a beacon that arrived in the
1920s. Supermarkets weren’t
invented when Hellabys began,
but that didn’t mean there wasn’t
soon to be competition. If you
didn’t like their cut of meat you
could pop along the road to
Hopkins butchery.
Down from Hellabys was Dolly
Varden’s dairy, Ron White’s
chemist shop and Mrs Dove’s
haberdashery – not to mention
Miss North’s stationery, library
and bookshop.

serve (and a bit later still a New
World - in the present video
rental barn), and Fook’s had fresh
fruit and veges.
Winterbottom’s dairy dished out
more bread and milk, a tea-
rooms served up fine fare and
Skyrings material store, a men’s
clothing shop, hardware store
and Shepherd Shoes satisfied
shopping lists.
Then there was Marie home
cookery (and Nanette’s back in
the 40s) and Simich fish shop,
and in the centre of all the action
was the post office (where Triniti
of Silver now sits).
Down the city side of the
lights there was similar variety
– service station, Atwell the
chemist, McAlpine’s shoe shop, a
stationery shop and, back in the
50s, Mrs Carter’s clothing store.
It all looked a little more
welcoming than today, even
though many businesses still
show their pride through bright
and tidy frontages. If the council
plans can again make the village
enticing to shoppers, that would
really be progress.

is going through a dull patch?

Anne and her team are frustrated
at the lack of local listings to satisfy
a growing band of buyers looking
for homes across their local patch.
“The media seems to be full of
stories about slow sales and prices
going nowhere, but that’s not the
problem as we see it – our problem
is a lack of good properties to meet
the strong demand,” says Anne.
She says character homes –
either renovated or ready for a do
up – are in particular demand and
points to the success enjoyed by

in Martin Ave, Mt Albert.
Seventy groups were hosted
in two open homes, drawing
four offers in a fortnight and an
unconditional sale at a great price.
“We’re seeing that sort of result
quite regularly as more people see
real value in Mt Albert with its great
schools, closeness to the city, good
amenities and transport links and
sense of community,” says Anne.
The $650,000-$700,000 bracket
is going particularly well, she
says, but the upper market above
$900,000 and up to $1.4m is also
drawing strong interest.
T HE city fringe area has some
great schools, and it’s terrific to
see them building even stronger
reputations. Metro magazine
has named Marist College as
Auckland’s best secondary school
– a terrific achievement for the
Mt Albert school for girls – and
Mt Albert Grammar School also
featured in the top tier.
