Tahoe Basin is “grim” right
now, but at this point one

to be “atmospheric rivers.”
So far, about a week before
winter officially begins,
the saying “high-pressure
system” has dominated the
forecasts — and made snow
lovers cringe and mutter
obscenities under their
breath. It also makes some
rejoice after spending what
seemed like more time with
their snow shovels last year
than their loved ones.

ing storms north, over the
western United States and
settling on the East Coast,
said Edan Weishahn, mete-
orologist with the National
Weather Service office in
Reno.

“It’s kinda been a bum-
mer,” Weishahn said. “I’d
rather have storms once a
week that come through
and clear out the air and
dump snow on the moun-
tains. There’s a high-pres-
sure area off the entire West
Coast and a low-pressure
area in the east. Thankfully
over the next week, it looks
like that high pressure is
going to move.”
She said it’s very unpre-
dictable, but we might see
some small snow showers.
However, it doesn’t look
like there are any serious
winter storms that are go-
ing to come through before
the end of 2017.
Last winter, intense
winter storms pounded the
Tahoe Basin in January.
“At this time of year, it
can turn around quick-
ly,” Anderson said. “A cold
storm would really help.
We’ll forget all this again
next year if a big, cold
storm comes through.”

A decision-
making primer
O
f all the mil-
lions of things
we humans
do throughout
our lives, making deci-
sions are among the most
consequential.
Obviously, some decisions
are more important and
life affecting than others.
Whether I choose a Pepsi or
a root beer for lunch prob-
ably will not endure past to-
night. But whether I choose
to get a tattoo of a hippo on
my forehead, or no tattoo,
will definitely impact the
remainder of my life.
Same is true for whether
to buy this house or that,
choose this career or that,
move to this city or that and
marry this person or not.
Decisions determine pivotal,
and sometimes irreversible,
aspects of each human life.
We humans are fortunate
in having many choices
that other species don’t
have. Clams, elephants
and chimps are driven by
more primitive survival
instincts in their lives, but
never have to choose be-
tween several universities
or businesses or wheth-
er to leave their parents’
house or remain living in
the basement for a bargain
rent. Of course, these deci-
sions make our lives more
complicated, which can be
very confusing and onerous,
but that’s all part of being

decision making.

or not, decisions come with
the territory, unless you are
in a coma. You even have
to choose whether or not to
keep reading this.
All decisions are made on
two levels, emotional and
logical. I might buy a used
car, attracted by its sporty
looks, bright color and sexy
interior, an emotionally
driven decision. Later I
realize it’s a clunker with a
cracked engine block and
defective brakes, problems
my emotions ignored. Or
I might buy a smart (but
dull) car, with great de-
pendability and good gas
mileage, but never feel good
driving it, later concluding
it’s really dotty grandma’s
boxy car that doesn’t fit
my self image. Logical, but
emotionally dissatisfying.
So the best decisions con-
sider both levels.
We all have emotions,
inherent with being human,
and unavoidable. Emotions
are often based on past
teachings, experiences and
values. If you were taught
to hate violence, boxing and
joining the army produce
unpleasant feelings and
are probably inadvisable.
If you were taught, and
developed a love for nature
and the outdoors, spending
35 years of your profes-
sional life in a cubicle as
an accountant probably
is not a good choice, even
though it provides a good
income, something logic
recommends. Our emo-
tions, not quantifiable,
and often unaware, so not
controlled, always influence
us, nonetheless. Anger, the
emotion that is most wide
spread in causing us to be-
have destructively, is much
better handled with calm,
rational, critical thinking
that can mitigate damage,

or at least preservation of
the relationship.
I wish we had a “tool” for
teaching emotional intel-
ligence like we now have a
“tool” for teaching logical
intelligence. Created in
the 1970s by an American
architect named How-
ard Garns, who originally
named it Number Place,
Sudoku is sweeping the
world, slowly contributing
to the cognitive evolution of
humanity.
Critical thinking, or logic,
is an indispensable compo-
nent of all good decisions.
Logic is subject to delib-
eration and debate, easier
than emotion to discuss,
often with pros and cons,
often with quantifiable
information. Our abilities
to use logic productively to
maximum advantage can be
impacted through educa-
tion. Math and science also
teach this, as does Sudoku.
Solo Sudoku trains us in
the most basic features of
logical thinking. Sudoku
teaches how to think, not
what to think. Sudoku is to
thinking what walking is to
transportation. If you don’t
learn good logical thinking,
later decisions will be inferi-
or and sometimes disastrous.
Sudoku is like a tune
up for the brain, a form of
mental yoga that teaches us
the basics of good deci-
sion making. Fundamen-
tal skills, like identifying
all relevant information,
requiring accuracy and
forestalling decisions until
adequate information is
acquired, are all taught and
trained by doing Sudoku
puzzles. Once these three
requirements are achieved,
it’s important to be decisive,
committing to an informed
decision with confidence.
All erroneous decisions
are caused by breaking
one or more of these basic
requirements of productive
thinking.
Making these skills a
habit results in strong crit-
ical thinking and deductive
reasoning. It’s important
to train children in these
fundamental skills; this will
produce formidable deci-
sion makers. Further, when
puzzles are solved by small
teams of 3 or 4, decisions
are made in unison, necessi-
tating calm communication
and respectful collaboration
in order to make accurate
decisions. All of us, but
particularly future leaders,
must work together to make
beneficial decisions, for our-
selves and society in general.
The successful cognitive and
moral evolution of humanity
depends on it.
Since Sudoku requires
100 percent accuracy for
success, and since accuracy
can be equated with truth,
developing respect and
need for accuracy will pro-
duce a larger recognition of
truth. This is particularly
applicable in today’s polit-
ical environment, where
fake news, and accusations
of fake news (which is not
fake) are common, under-
mine morality and trust.
Learning to discern truth
from untruth enables us to
recognize mendacity, an in-
valuable skill when evaluat-
ing a politician and his/her
statements and character.
Training by Sudoku will
result in better voting deci-
sions and choices in every
aspect of our complex lives.

Where’s the value in a civilization
that doesn’t respect differences?

y dog Sandy
wears the
sunglasses
and I squint
into the December sun.
Two bottles of milk, one
white and one chocolate,
sit precariously on the
front steps.
My mother moved in
with my grandparents
when my father joined
the Army following the
bombing of Pearl Harbor
on Dec. 7, 1941.
The Sunday morning
surprise attack inter-
rupted my grandparents’
preparation for Mass at
the little wooden Catho-
lic Church on the skirts
of Punchbowl Crater. At
one point during that
endless two-hour siege,
a Japanese plane with a
rising sun insignia on its
flank flew up their street.
The pilot turned his head
and looked down at them
standing mesmerized on
their front porch.
Then he emptied his
shells into the side of
Punchbowl Crater before
returning to his aircraft
carrier.
My family lived through
blackouts and rationing,
and the loss of sailor
buddies who never made
it back. They helped re-
trieve bodies from the
oil slicked depths of Pearl
Harbor before the crabs
could do more damage to
“those poor boys”.
Yet the Japanese in Ha-
waii, those who lived and
worked beside their neigh-
bors, were not rounded
up and interned when the
United States entered into
World War II.
The same people of
Japanese ancestry who
were forcibly removed
from their homes and
locked away in California,
Washington, and elsewhere
were the same Japanese
that remained as farmers,
seamstresses, and teachers
in Hawaii. And war heroes.
Fourteen-thousand sec-
ond generation Japanese
Americans volunteered to
join the 442nd Infantry
Regiment known as the
Hawaii “Go for Broke”
unit. Of those who served,
9,486 members were
awarded Purple Hearts.
As a young child in
post-war Hawaii, I
thrived in the kaleido-
scope of a multi-cultural
neighborhood.
The Chong family lived
across the street from
my Gramma. My mother
tells that before her own
father decided to put a
telephone in their house,
she would receive calls at
the Chong residence. Mr.
Chong’s broken English
was further compromised
by a very obvious stutter
when he spoke, but he
would broadcast “Heeee-
zooo” loud and clear to
the entire neighborhood
whenever she received a

The black and white
photos evolve into a series
of school photos of chil-
dren with plaid dress-
es, striped T-shirts, and

palettes of diversity. Most
of the elementary school
teachers standing at the
end of the last bleacher in
those photos are women
of Japanese descent.
We all see life through
a personal lens. Those of
us who hold on to the old
black and white photos as
the great times tend not
to take in the panoramic
shot of any moment in
history. We see only our
narrow view of life. Our
family. Our business. Our
back yard.
On Dec. 8, 2017, Rep
Steve King, R-Iowa,
tweeted, “Diversity is not
our strength.” He then
endorsed the Hungarian
Prime Minister’s view that
“Mixing cultures will not
lead to a higher quality
life, but a lower one.”
In December, 2017, a
Senate candidate from
Alabama is quoted as call-
ing Native Americans and
Asian Americans “Red”
and “Yellow.” When asked
when in history America
was last great, Roy Moore
responded, “I think it was
a time when families were
united — even though we
had slavery — they cared
for one another.”
The President of the
United States wrote in
“Art of the Deal,” “Tell
them what they want to
hear. Then play to their
fantasies.”
Those who preach the
malice of foreigners,
closing of borders, and
the building of walls are
telling white nationalists
what they want to hear.
Those who parade an ex-
clusive brand of patrio-
tism and an inbred form
of culture are playing to
the fantasy of one supe-
rior race. They deny the
very roots of our Ameri-
can heritage.
My grandparents moved
to California when I was
10 years old. When I vis-
ited them with my own
children, my grandfather
had begun grafting the
branches of an apple tree
that had produced three
varieties of apples. Their
four daughters had grafted
English, Irish, Portuguese,
and Japanese branches to
the family tree.
My Gramma Emelia
had made friends with
an immigrant neighbor
from Italy who spoke no
English.
Mrs. Bevilacqua baked
bread in an outdoor oven,
raised several feathered
fowl in her front yard, and
brought stinky cheese in
a greasy wrapper to share
with Gramma. I am told
that her grand daugh-
ter, Barbara, is now a
physician.
Gramma’s view from her
front porch, the cultural
enrichment of that first
neighborhood, and contin-
ued respect for neighbors
no matter where she lived,
opened the whole world
to me.
She helped me see that
when you believe in the
goodness of the human
spirit, and afford people
opportunities to live in
communities of mu-
tual respect, you open
up a bright prism of
possibilities.

On the date, Rep Steve
King tweeted, “You cannot
rebuild your civilization
with someone else’s ba-
bies, you’ve got to keep
your birthrate up and you
have to teach your chil-
dren your values.”
Gramma Emelia would
have invited King to sit
down for a bowl of steam-
ing red bean and cabbage
soup. She would have la-
dled the soup with a shak-
ing hand and told him
that she had given birth
at home to seven babies.
She taught them all that
the value of being a good
American was acceptance
and celebration of all the
diversity that made Amer-
ica great.
She might ask what val-
ue there was in a civiliza-
tion that did not respect
differences.
When he told her that,
“Assimilation has become
a dirty word to the multi-
culturalist Left. Assimila-
tion, not diversity, is our
American strength”, she
would have offered him a
slice of Portuguese sweet
bread she had baked that
morning.
“Assimilation?” she would
have asked. She would have
wiped her hands on the
embroidered apron and
shown him photos of her
yet unborn, beautiful racial-
ly-mixed grandchildren.
(Because this is my
fantasy, she might have
delivered a soft blow the
side his head).
My mother would be
the first in her family
to graduate from high
school. That squinty eyed
granddaughter without
shoes would earn a grad-
uate degree. But in those
years apart, I never wrote
her letters to tell her how
welcomed and loved she
made people feel.
I didn’t write those let-
ters because my Gramma
never learned to read.
I don’t remember who
taught me to read. But I
know it must have been
someone with parents
who immigrated from a
foreign country.

den away in closets, waiting
to be wrapped, the ingredi-
ents for gingerbread men
are sitting in cupboards, and
the kindling for the fireplace
has been chopped.
A monster of a wildfire
burning in Southern Cal-
ifornia froze the Sawyers’
plans for a big family
Christmas and has forced
the couple from their San-
ta Barbara home for nearly
two weeks.
Even if their beloved home
of five decades survives the
next predicted onslaught of
winds, the Sawyers are pre-
paring for Christmas in yet
another hotel.
“This is getting ridicu-
lous,” said the 82-year-old
Curry Sawyer from her ho-
tel in Goleta on Tuesday.
“My husband has the

of 84 per week this summer

glass accordion doors so we can have a nice indoor-out-
door space,” explained Riffle. “It’s going to be a rus-
tic-modern look.”
When grading season begins in May, the partners will
refine the outdoor space by adding a patio, fire pits and
a fence around the dog park. There will be a picnic area
and lawn games like bocce ball, horseshoes and corn
hole.
“We love the property. It’s right off of [U.S.] 50 so
it’s easy to get to, but you’re not tucked into a shopping
center. You’re right on the [Upper] Truckee River and in
the trees,” said Riffle. “You can let your dog off the leash,
throw a ball and let it run around like a hooligan while
you enjoy a beer.”
The Hangar will have 30 craft beers on tap, along with
light snacks.
“We definitely want to work with some of the local
breweries, but we’re also going to do some ‘self distri-
bution,’ meaning we’ll bring in craft beers from the Bay
Area and Southern California that are so small they
don’t have national distribution. We’ll pick them up our-
selves and bring them here.”

Getting ahead with

your winter produce
Dear Alan: Are there any local
vegetables that are in season right
now? I see asparagus and bell
peppers at the natural food stores.
Even I know those have to come
from far away.
Alan: I hear you. Produce choices,
especially from local growers, seem
limited in winter. I’m sure grocery
stores feel like they have to have
a full range of produce to attract
customers. But we have many local
options to enliven our winter meals.
The so-called cole crops, all
members of the mustard family,
love the kind of cool, moist con-
ditions we have all winter long.
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and
mustard greens are in their prime
in the cool season.
Right now I’m thinking about
broccoli and cauliflower. They
are easy to prepare, and offer a
big reward in terms of flavor and
nutrition.
■ Broccoli — big heads, typi-
cally dark green with well-defined
texture.
■ Sprouting broccoli or broc-
colini — looser, smaller clusters
of bigger flower buds on long-
ish stems, dark green or purple
varieties.
■ Broccoli rabb — leafy green
shoots like turnip greens with large
flower buds.
■ Cauliflower — pure white,
golden orange or bright purple
heads with very fine texture; flower
buds are fused together, called
curds.
■ Romanesco — conical, char-
treuse green heads with fine tex-
tured florets arrange in a spiral.
TIPS & TRICKS FOR BROCCOLI
& CAULIFLOWER
If you have whole heads of brocco-
li, cut off the stem just below where
it starts to branch. Use a paring knife
to peel the stem and cut into slices to
cook along with the florets.
Cauliflower is a little more diffi-
cult, but you can cut out a cone-
shaped piece of the base to release
the florets. That thick stem can also
be peeled and cooked
Broccoli and cauliflower can then
be divided into small florets with
a little of the stem attached and
served raw with your favorite dip.

Or, blanch in salted water, or
steam, and serve hot with melted
butter or olive oil, salt and pepper. I
like to peel even the small stems of
broccoli florets.
If you are cooking ahead to serve
cold or reheat later, lay the almost
cooked pieces out on a kitchen
towel to cool. Then refrigerate un-
covered, but try to use soon so they
don’t develop a strong flavor.
A dressier presentation for cau-
liflower or Romanesco is to serve
it hot with brown butter, chopped
parsley, sieved egg and toasted but-
tered breadcrumbs.
Broccoli and cauliflower can
be sautéed, either cooked or raw,
with a bit of olive oil. Add some
chopped garlic at the end of cook-
ing. Let cauliflower get a bit brown
for extra flavor.
Broccoli and cauliflower can be
roasted in a 375 degree Fahren-
heit oven, by themselves or with
other cold season vegetables such
as carrots, turnips, parsnips and
potatoes, seasoned with olive oil,
salt and pepper.
For broccolini or raab I usually
just cut off and discard some of the
stem and sauté the remainder in
olive oil with salt and pepper until
tender, adding minced garlic at the
end. Add some water if they start
to scorch before they are done.
All types of cooked broccoli and
cauliflower can be a base for pasta,
with the addition of garlic, parsley,
olive oil and Parmesan, or used on
pizza with fontina or mozzarella.
I found my all-time favorite
cauliflower preparation in Paris,
at a tiny restaurant in a wine store,
where customers had to lean
over your table to pick bottles off
the shelves. It was opened by the
former pastry chef of a famous
Michellin three star restaurant who
wanted a less stressful life.
Chef Bertrand cooked beautiful
three-course set menus for a few
people each evening. This time the
first course was a creamy cauliflow-
er soup, served tepid, in a tureen
at each table, with little bowls of
crème fraîche, crispy bacon, buttery
croutons and chopped chives to add
to taste.
Of course it was unforgettable.
I’ve made it many times since.
CAULIFLOWER SOUP
LES PAPILLES
Serves 4 to 6
1 medium cauliflower (about 2
pounds)
1 medium onion
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
Water, vegetable or chicken
stock, about 4 cups
1/4 cup cream or crème fraîche
Salt
Nutmeg
Cut out the central stem of the
cauliflower and break the florets
apart. Peel the stem and cut into
½-inch pieces. Peel the onion and
slice thin.
Place a soup pot over medium
heat and add the butter. When the
butter is foaming, add the onion
and cauliflower. Reduce the heat
and stew the vegetables for 15 min-
utes, adding water as necessary to
prevent browning.
Add water or stock to cov-
er. Bring to a simmer and cook,
covered, until vegetables are very
tender, about 25 minutes.
Purée in a blender and return
to the soup pot. Reheat gently and
add the cream. Season with salt
and freshly grated nutmeg.
Serve hot or room temperature
with bowls of crème fraîche, crispy
bacon bits, buttered croutons and
snipped chives for each person to
season at will.

I can put together a decent din-
ner party. But when it comes to
the end of the meal, I have never
been at ease with making a cuppa
for my coffee-drinking guests,
because I only do tea.
My new plan is to serve this
whiz-bang-simple dessert, which
offers all the coffee flavor with
precious little bitterness - and
a mild buzz of caffeine, if you
don’t opt for decaf. It is an un-
expectedly light and cool way
to satisfy everyone at the table,
from the pour-over faithful to
K-Cup fans.
COFFEE GELATINS
6 to 8 Servings
Ingredients
1 cup water, plus 1 cup boiling
water
3 tablespoons powdered gelatin
(from 4 individual packets)
1 tablespoon instant espresso
powder
(Using cold-brew coffee elim-
inates bitterness, but if you like
that coffee feature, use your own
brewed, chilled coffee instead.)
1/2 cup sugar, preferably su-
perfine (It’s best to use superfine
sugar, to help ensure a grit-free
gel set.)
2 cups homemade or store-
bought cold-brew coffee (caffein-
ated or decaf; see TIP)
Whipped cream or chilled heavy
cream, for serving
STEPS
Pour the one cup of water into a
9-by-5-inch loaf pan, then sprin-
kle the powdered gelatin over the
water’s surface. Let sit for 5 to 10
minutes, until the gelatin firms
up.
Combine the 1 cup of boiling
water and the instant espresso
powder in a large liquid measur-
ing cup, stirring until the granules
have dissolved, then quickly add
the sugar, stirring until it has
dissolved.
Pour the sweetened coffee
mixture into the pan, then use
a fork or flat whisk to thor-
oughly incorporate it into the
gelatin mixture, making sure
there are no clumps of gelatin.
(You can pinch any stray lumps
into submission with your clean
fingers.)
Pour in the cold-brew coffee
mixture, stirring gently. Any foam
or bubbles on the surface should
subside after a few minutes; if not,
stir to make them disappear.
Cover with plastic wrap (not
touching the surface) and refrig-
erate for at least 3 hours, or until
firm.
Uncover and invert the slab
of coffee gelatin onto a cutting
board. Cut into 1-inch cubes and
divide among dessert cups. Top
with whipped cream, or pour a lit-
tle heavy cream over each portion.
Serve chilled.

Nearly three weeks ago, I reviewed
a new book by Danny Roth, a Lon-
doner. Hard on the heels of that comes
another book of the same type but with
a different publisher: “Outsmart the
Bridge Experts” (HNB).
Roth sets 60 declarer-play and
defense problems where he believes
Roth, probably correctly, suggests
that this is a constructed deal. If the
defense begins with three rounds of
diamonds, declarer ruffs and ought
to draw two rounds of trumps. (Roth
recommends immediately ruffing
losers in hand.) Then, when South sees
the 4-1 break, he plays a club to dummy
and ruffs a diamond. (If East trumps
in, declarer discards his spade loser.)

“I don’t think we’ve been focusing down the stretch

Brooks Koepka pulled
away at Erin Hills with four
straight one-putts — a par
save on the 13th and three
birdies. The clinching mo-
ment was his birdie on the
par-3 16th, where his 9-iron
came back to the front sec-
tion of the green for a putt
that allowed him to go four
shots ahead.
“We thought it might be
up top, and it was a relief
to see it at the bottom and
have a putt at it,” Koepka
said. “I just remember say-
ing, ‘Get it there.’ I started
it on line, and I was looking
at it with disbelief that it’s
going in. In my mind, you
are in complete control at
that point. The only thing
you can do from here is
mess it up.”
Koepka knew he was in
control a few holes earlier,
a shot that he recalled with-
out any hesitation.
“The tee shot on the par
5, No. 14,” he said. “We
could hit 3-wood and get
to the bunker, but driver
was no good because we
couldn’t carry it or we had
a 20-yard fairway. We actu-
ally had to cut this 3-wood
up into the wind. We had
to take a lot off it. It only
wound up 4 yards short of
the bunker. We were walk-
ing up and I said, ‘I think
we can go for that par 5 in
two.’”
He put it in the greenside
bunker and got up-and-
down for birdie.
“That’s probably a mo-
ment a normal person
wouldn’t think anything of
it,” he said.
BRITISH OPEN
Jordan Spieth saw his
50-foot eagle putt that gave
him the lead for good at
Royal Birkdale differently
than anyone watching on
television or anyone else.
“I knew it was going to
bend a little bit to the right
as it went down off the
slope to the bunker,” he
said. “And then when it gets
to the valley, the hole is on
a 3-degree slope going the
other way, into and off the
right. So it’s going to be a
downhill left-to-right, and
then it double breaks into
uphill right-to-left.”
Got that?
“Go get that,” he told
caddie Michael Greller after
making the putt .
“I like those putts,” he
said. “They become total
feel. That’s what I needed
at that point in time, to get
the technicality out of it.”
The finish is famous.
Overlooked was a shot
in the second round that
Spieth felt kept him from
a mini-meltdown. Right
when the rain started
pounding, Spieth drove into
a pot bunker on No. 10,
punched out and then hit
his third shot long and to
the right. Facing bogey or
worse, he chipped in for par.
“I hit a beautiful chip
that went in that kept
momentum going in the
worst of the weather that
we experienced that week,”
Spieth said. “That chip shot
was massive at that point
because I was faltering. I
could have made bogey or
double easy.”
PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Justin Thomas said his
stock 7-iron goes 190 yards.
He had 199 yards to clear
the water on the par-3 17th
at Quail Hollow.
He went with 7-iron .
“I know it’s not what I
would usually hit,” Thomas
said. “But it was a situation
where I did not want to
ease off something. My
adrenaline was going so
much, I was hitting it well
and I could turn it toward
the pin. I made a perfect
swing.”
The ball landed on the
front of the green and set
up a birdie putt that sent
him to the final hole with a
three-shot lead.
Much like Spieth, how-
ever, Thomas recalled a
short-game shot earlier in
the tournament that could
have turned his fortunes.
It was Thursday morning.
He started on the back nine
and was 2 over with three
holes left, starting with
the par-5 seventh. That’s a
birdie hole if he can get it
into the fairway. He hit into
the water and made bogey.
Then, he flew the green
on No. 8, and suddenly an
opening-round 75 was a
real possibility.
“I could not have been
in a worse place,” Thomas
said. “I was 7 yards over
the green on a down slope.
And now I have a chip that
I have to get up-and-down
or I’m 4 over and it just
changes everything. Now I
go into Friday grinding to
make the cut.
“I hit one of the most
ridiculous flop shots I’ve
ever hit.”
He birdied the ninth for a
73, shot 66 the next day and
was on his way.

right ankle.
Curry was evaluated
by the team’s training
staff Tuesday. The team
says the ankle is healing

on-court workouts. Curry

clarity on when he can
