Greetings from Michigan!

January, 2018

Happy New Year from Mears in Oceana County, Michigan! I love winter here and the beautiful powder snow that
comes as lake effect snow. We had 45” of snow in December and at least 20” this month. For at least a week, snow
fell ever day and night, sometimes 3”, sometimes 4” or 5”. When I present the Gospel in Romania, we use the
Wordless Book colors. White means Jesus cleans our hearts white as snow! I always tell the people, I like snow! The
children always agree and like it too!

January 3 the first cataract came out of my left eye. My first vision, I thought, do colors look more vibrant? When I
closed my left eye and looked out of my right, I was amazed at the yellow cast everything had. Wow, I had no idea this
would be part of the result of the cataracts coming out. You can see me below left, with the eye guard from the first
surgery. The eye doctor is in Muskegon, about 35 miles south of Mears. At the initial appointment with him I
happened to mention I live in Romania as a missionary, he said really, what city, and told him Craiova. He said his
parents and grandparents are from Romania, but he was born in Ohio!

Tomorrow, January 17, the right eye cataract will be removed. I am 2 weeks into drops for my left eye with 2
weeks to go. Two days ago started to put drops into my right eye. Four weeks of drops into my right eye will take me
to within 1 week of leaving for Romania on February 23. I will have new lens for my glasses and be ready to go!

Three summers ago, we were in a village called Urdari, about 1 hour north of Craiova. I met a boy named Robert; I
th
think he was going to be in 10 grade. I keep contact with many young people on Facebook and Robert is one. He
th
has a problem with his eyes called Optic Nerve Atrophy; basically he is going blind, now 18 years old and in 12
grade. Tomorrow I intend to ask my Romanian eye doctor if he can help. Robert has been told he can go to Thailand
to have stem cell work done and it will cost $28,000.

Robert is a very good Orthodox person, believes in Jesus. About 2 weeks ago he asked me how he can be close
to God. I have talked to him about salvation before, and thought “Wow Lord, is this an opportunity to lead Robert to
You?” I spoke with Robert about the Romans road verses and John 3:16. He understood and prayed to trust Jesus
as his Savior! The next day he said “Jim, my mom wants to do what I did, can you repeat what you said yesterday?”
His mom trusted Christ! Praise God for this! Please pray for Robert that he and his mom will grow in Jesus. When I
return to Romania, I will take them copies of my pastors’ books that are written to disciple a new believer. Please pray
for Robert and his mother, and ask the Lord to provide a solution for Roberts coming blindness. Robert is above, right

Thank you again, for praying for me and supporting me financially with your gifts. God is still working in Romania
even while your missionary is home in the states!

God bless you!
