Short Functional Text

1.1 Definition of Short Functional Text


Short Functional Text is a short text that has certain meanings and functions
commonly used in everyday life, and for Short Functional Text we have 20 type
of it.

1.2 Kind of Short Functional Text


1.2.1 Announcement
Announcement is the kind of the text that use to announce something
that can be listen and written.

The Purpose of Announcement


To tell the reader / listener about some information about something

Part of Announcement
Title: Used as Title in top of the Announcement, and it used to
describe what the announcement mean
Explanation: Informing the announcement, usually its tell, when we
must come to school, what we use, and what we bring to school

Here some example of Announcement:

1.2.2 Memo
Memo are short, concise, clear, and easy to understand. Memo
divided to 2, its Official memo and Personal memo. Official Memo is
used to communication between boss and us. Personal Memo is used
to tell thing to do by our friend, family or someone else

The Purpose of Memo


To inform something to someone with a note, usually its founded in
refrigerator or something else

Part of Memo
a) Address: Is the receiver of the memo
b) Contain: Is the content of memo
c) Sender: Is the sender of the memo

1.2.3 Timetable / Schedule
Schedule is a schedule, can be a timetable or school timetable. It can
be television shows or televisions programs, a schedule of a show or a
show time, flight schedule or flight schedule, itinerary, and arrival or
train departure schedule. One of the purpose of the schedule is that the
planned activities can be done well.

Example of Timetable / Schedule:

1.2.4 Caution
Caution is a warning or suggestion addressed to the public about
danger or risk that may occur. In this case, the danger that may occur
is not as fatal in the warning. Caution is usually also shaped signs and
we often see the streets. The purpose of the text is to give instruction
to people.

1.2.5 Warning
Warning or warning is a beacon that is usually installed in certain
places to attract the attention of readers. This warning is made for the
safety of the reader. For example, "Warning! Impact use of this
hacksaw may cause severe injury. The purpose of text to tell people
about something that maybe can cause injury

of the Menu is to make costumer know the list of menu in Restaurant

Shopping list is a list of items needed to be purchased by a shopper.
The purpose of shopping list is to make your grocery shopping
efficient and pleasant as possible.

Label is an information contained in the outer packaging of a product
or goods. To give detailed information about a product.

Identity card is one type of card used to record or provide information
about someone identity.

In Identity Card will include these:

 Place and date of birth:
 Nationality:
 Sex:
 Status marital:
 Blood type:
 Number identity:

1.2.11 Invitation Card
An invitation is a request, a solicitation, or an attempt to get another
person to join you at a specific event. The Purpose of Invitation Card
is to invite or invite someone to attend a particular event.

Generic Structure:
a) Invitee: Who is invited
b) Body of invitation: The contents of invitations are usually the
following:
c) Occasion: This invitation was created for what event
d) Day or Date: Day and date
e) Time: Time set
f) Place: The place where the invited guests are expected to
attend
g) Inviter: Who invites
h) Once again the arrangement as above is just a general rule of
how an invitation is written in English. And even

1.2.12 Greeting Card
Greeting cards are greeting cards to express feelings or give attention
to others. Greeting cards are usually give interesting picture or
writing.

Greeting cards can be:


a) Birthday card: contains birthday greetings and given to
someone who is birthday.
b) Thank you card: just for thanks.
c) Get well card: given to someone who is sick and
contains hope to get well soon.
d) Congratulation card: Give to congratulate someone on
achievements that have been achieved.
e) Holiday card, given to someone who is on vacation.

1.2.13 Poster
Poster is work of art or a graphic design which includes composition
of pictures and letters on the large sheet of paper that contains a
message.

1.2.14 Advertisement
Text advertisement is text that has the objective to announce
something that appeals to many people and that adds a well-known
product in all public. The purpose of advertisement text. is to
announce about a case or a product to the public, or in other words to
introduce a product to the public in order to buy and attracted to the
product being advertised

Part of Advertisement:
a) Title: part of the advertisement text that is a major component or
the main topic, Great Announcement Sample Sale Up to 50% on
the banner at the supermarket or hypermarket.
b) Explanation: Contains an explanation of what the content of the
advertisements and usually accompanied by elephantiasis
interesting words to attract visitors to be able to follow what is
appropriate at the announcement of advertisement text

Brochure is a single set of paper to give information, to promote or to
advertise something.

Purpose of brochure:
a) To give an Information
b) Promotion
c) To increase attractiveness for a product
d) As an identity for a product

Job Vacancy is a job advertisement. The Purpose of Job Vacancy is to
make people know about jobs nearby his town

1.2.17 Post Card
Postcards is a piece of thick paper or thin cardboard rectangular used
for writing and delivery without an envelope and at a price cheaper
than a letter. The Purpose of Post Card is to send a mail.

1.2.18 Personal Letter
Personal Letter is an unofficial letter written for an individual, usually
involved only two people who know each other.

Part of Personal Letter


a) Date: Usually this date is written on the top left. This date
indicates when the time the letter was written.
b) The address is written at the top right.
c) Salutation & Name: This section lists the opening greetings and
the recipient's name.
d) Introduction: Opening of the letter usually begins with an opening
like the response of the previous letter or it could be the beginning
of self-introduction if you are just starting a correspondence.
e) Body (Content of Letters): This section is the content or essence
of the letter. In this part of body, you tell all the contents of
the letter we want to tell.
f) Closure This section indicates that the letter will end soon.
g) Complimentary close: This section is a short covering phrase.
h) Signature: This section is under complementary close, you can put
a signature or it could be just your initials name.

1.2.19 Formal Letter
Formal letter is letter that is use to legitimate interests, both
individuals, institutions, and organizations. In writing a formal letter,
the language is standard one, polite, and formal.

Part of Formal Letter


a. Heading: Generally, contains the date of mail and the address
of the sender.
b. Greeting: A greeting for the recipient of the letter,
c. Body: The contents of a letter that tells the person's personal
interests.
d. Closing: Contains a closing greeting from the sender for the
recipient of the letter.
e. Signature and Name: The signature part and name of the
sender can also be added to a private letter or Personal
Letter.

Example of Formal Letter:

1.2.20 E- Mail
Email or Electronic Mail is same as normal mail but its use internet to
send it to target. Email doesn’t need fee to send it and email
registration is free too.

Part of E-Mail
a. The header: Contains information about the sender and
recipient of the e-mail, delivery time and subject of the letter.
In this section there is usually an abbreviation cc which
is short for carbon copy that filled the e-mail address of others
who are entitled to receive the letter's coffee.
b. Message body: Is the part that describes the contents of the
letter
c. The signature: This section shows the identity of the sender.

Essay Text
2.1 Definition of Essay Text
Essay text is a long text and it’s use to explain thing.

2.2 Kind of Essay Text


2.2.1 Descriptive Text
This text is the text used to describe a specific place, person, or object.
This text is at first glance almost the same as report text, the difference
is the subject of descriptive text more focused to the object

The generic structure of this text is:


a) Identification: Explains who, where or what is being
explained.
b) Description: Explains thing that we choose.

Example of Descriptive Text:


I have one Sister. Her name is Desi. Her full name is Desiyana
Nurhaliza. Now, she in grade two. Her school in SD Cipari 1. She
lives in Serdang Asri 1 block F 11/02. She lives with me and our
Parents. Her age is eight years old.

Desi has big and black eyes. She has long hair and small nose.
Her skin is brown and she is tall. Her height is 115 cm. And her
weight is 20 Kg. Desi is clever student. Her IQ is 129. She has many
Friends, there are Yeni, Jesika, Zakia, Nopan, Candra and each other.

2.2.2 Procedural Text
Procedure texts are part of our daily life. To tell us how something is
done through steps or action. To inform how to do or make
something.

Generic structure:
a) Goal / Purpose: Title of text
b) Material: Thing that we need to create something
(OPTIONAL!)
c) Steps: Step to do to complete the thing we need

Example of Procedural Text:


“How to Make Oreo Shake”

Ingredients:
 5 Biscuit Oreo
 Cubes of ice cubes
 Tablespoons cocoa powder or chocolate syrup can be
substituted
 Scoops (large scoop) Vanilla Ice Cream
 Cups milk UHT Supplement: whipped cream (if desired)
Chocolate Syrup
Steps:
 Prepare blender, Put Oreo, ice cubes, cocoa powder, ice cream
and UHT milk.
 Turn on the blender until blended Oreo and all the ingredients
are well blended Pour in serving glasses
 Give whipped cream and chocolate syrup if desired
 Serve immediately while still cold

2.2.3 Recount Text
Recount text Is the text to tell about something that happened in the
past.
The form can be:
a) Biography and Autobiography
b) Newspaper and Television news
c) Mail and Postcards
d) Text Books
e) Conversations with Friends

Generic structure:
a) Orientation: In this section, the author begins the story by
introducing background information that answers, when, where
events or events occurred in the past.
b) Events: After telling the background or identity of the perpetrator,
setting the place and time, in this section then the author begins to
tell the story in sequence or chronological order.
c) Reorientation: The generic structure of the last recount text is
reorientation, many of which describe this section with a summary
that contains a repetition of the orientation section.

Example of Recount Text:


My sister and I went to see a film last night. It was an
American movie called The Lost Flight. It showed how people can
quickly change when they have to look after themselves in the jungle.
It was an interesting film about a plane which crashed on a small
empty island in the Pacific Ocean.
Although the passengers were safe, nobody knew where the plane had
crashed. So the passengers need to learn how to hunt for food in the
jungle and how to catch fish from the sea to eat. After a few weeks,
the passengers were eating raw fish and meat.
After they had been on the island for two months, three of the
men made a boat and sailed away to find help. But their boat sank and
they were drowned.
The film ended without saying whether the passengers were rescued
or not. But my sister and I enjoyed the film.

2.2.4 Narrative Text
Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people.

Generic Structure:
a. Orientation: In this section, the author begins the story by
introducing background information that answers, when,
where events or events occurred in the past.
b. Complication: Tells the beginning of the problems which leads
to the crisis of the main participants.
c. Resolution: The problem is resolved, either in a happy ending
or in a sad ending

Example of Narrative Text:


True Friends
Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking
through the forest together. They knew that anything dangerous can
happen any time in the forest. So they promised each other that they
would always be together in any case of danger.

Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer toward them. One of
them climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other one
did not know how to climb up the tree. So being led by his common
sense, he lay down on the ground breathless and pretended to be a
dead man.

The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt in
his ears, and slowly left the place because the bears do not want to
touch the dead creatures. After that, the friend on the tree came down
and asked his friend that was on the ground, "Friend, what did the
bear whisper into your ears?" The other friend replied, "Just now the
bear advised me not to believe a false friend."

2.2.5 Report Text
Report text is a text which present information about something, as it
is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analyses.

Generic Structure
a) General Classification: General statements that describe the
subject of the report, description, and
classification.
b) Description: tells what the phenomenon under discussion; in
terms of parts, qualities, habits or behaviors.

Example of Report Text:


Polar Bears
Polar bear is very large and strong animals. This animal can be
found at the North Pole which is the coldest regions on earth. While
at the South Pole there is no even a polar bear.
If in standing position, polar bear is very high. Its height can
reach 3 meters and its weighs is approximately 450 pounds. They can
use their front legs as hands and their back feet as they foot to walk.
Polar bears have very thick fur to protect themselves from the cold of
ice in the North Pole. The white color of their fur helps them
camouflaged with snow. Although polar bears are very large and
heavy, they are good swimmers. They can swim as far as 120 km
away from the mainland.
The polar bear is the second highest predators in the North
Pole after killer whales. They like to eat fish, seals, and penguins.
Polar bear nest in caves which are in the Ice. Unlike other types of
bears, polar bears do not hibernate. Hibernation is a state in which
they are asleep all winter.
However, the current population of polar bears in their natural
is decline. Many polar bears are hunted by poachers for its fur.
Therefore, the Government of Canada, USA and Russia
banned the hunting of polar bears
