When preparing for the TOEFL Speaking section, it really helps to have TOEFL Speaking sample answers you
can use to learn from.
That’s why I asked former students of mine to record example responses.
Below, I have shared with you six TOEFL Speaking Sample Answers – one from each question type.
In the future, I plan to continue to expand on this resource.
TOEFL Speaking Question 1 Response:
Q: “What is the most important book you have read and why?”
“Probably the most important book that I’ve read was the Harry Potter series. And the first reason for that is
because the Harry Potter series is really engaging and its quite interesting, you know I read it maybe 7 or 8
years ago, but it really really helped and inspired me to get into reading and get interested in reading and

that’s the first reason why I liked the Harry Potter books.

or liked
The second reason that I really more.the HarryGet ouris because
Potter books FREEtheGuide!story is really quite interesting. It’s
about this guy obviously Harry Potter who goes to this Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and just
these characters in the stories they taught are really interesting.
So that’s why I like Harry Potter, why it’s a really important book for me.

Q: “Has television
Namehad a positive or negative influence on society? Explain your reasons.”
“I think that television has had a negative influence on society. I don’t think there is any doubt about that and
that’s for two Email
reasons.
The first reason is because television is often controlled by government or by people who want to make
money. And for that reason a lot of theSIGN

see on television,
MY SCOREa lot of the supposed facts that you
might read about on television, actually aren’t true and it’s just controlled and created so that people can
make you think a certain way.
The second reason I think television has a negative influence is because it has made people dumber in a lot
of ways, because instead of reading books or engaging with other people around them, people now just watch
television.
So that’s why I think television has had a negative influence on society.”
TOEFL Speaking Question 3 Response
Q: Click here for the reading passage and dialogue
A: “The reading passage talks about how the school plans to acquire a new sculpture, and it also has a very
strong opinion that the school should not do this because it’s wasting money and it’s a really ugly thing taking
up space. The woman disagrees with the announcement and it’s for two main reasons.
The first reason is because she finds the argument in the reading passage unconvincing. She thinks it’ll
actually be really nice to finally have some art on campus, and that as well the money isn’t taken from the
students but instead the money was given by a donor.
The second reason she disagrees with the announcement is because the person who wrote this
announcement has other intentions. His name is Paul, and he’s just upset because the playground – basically
his personal playground – is being stolen, and he doesn’t want to have to move to another location on
campus. He’d prefer to just keep that spot for himself.
So those are the reasons why the woman disagrees with the announcement.”
TOEFL Speaking Question 4 Response:
Q: Click here for the reading passage and lecture
A: “The reading passage discusses and talks about Groupthink, which is when people conform their opinions
to what they believe the entire group will want. Sometimes the outcome can be quite negative.
People do this for multiple reasons. And in the lecture the professor discusses some of these reasons, and he
discusses a personal example when he dealt with Groupthink. He was working for this company, or his
company, and the computers needed a design makeover because they looked…well, they looked terrible. And
the new customers would be interested in the computer if they had a design re-shift.
So he brought this up, and at first he had more than half the people in the company who agreed with him,
but then this one senior official totally disagreed and said it wasn’t in line with the company’s vision. And
when this one senior official disagreed, then everyone else went along with the senior official because they
didn’t want to lose their job or anything like that.
So that’s the example the professor gives about Groupthink.”
TOEFL Speaking Question 5 Response:
Q: Click here to listen to the dialogue
A: “The woman is dealing with an interesting problem. She handles some daycare activities and she has to
rent a van to bring a bunch of kids to the zoo, but she waited until the last minute and so there are no more
vans available.
So her and the guy are talking and talking and he brings up two interesting solutions. The first thing he
recommends is finding a friend with an extra car, but the woman knows that it would be really difficult to first
of all find two cars, and then also find an extra driver to do that.
So the man also suggests public transportation, which has issues if you have a bunch of kids. But, I think
public transportation, in this situation, would be the best idea, just because the need to plan and organize is
much less.

much less.
Basically, you look at the bus schedule, you say, okay, the bus is coming at this time. Let’s get all the kids. You
can try to keep the kids entertained with cookies or stories throughout the bus ride and that’s a way to do it.
So that’s why I’d choose public transportation.”
TOEFL Speaking Question 6 Response:
Q: Click here to listen to the lecture
A: “I thought the lecture was about a really interesting topic and that was the intellectual ability of babies and
the professor talks about how researchers want to see if babies could add up one plus one to equal two.
So what they did is they took a five month baby and they devised an experiment where they show the baby a
doll on a table. And the baby sees the doll, and then what the researchers do is they lower a screen so that
the baby can’t see the doll anymore.
And then they take a second doll and they place it behind the screen, where the first doll, or close to where
the first doll would be. And then when the baby isn’t looking, when they can’t see it, the researchers secretly
take away one of the dolls.
So then the researchers raise the screen back up and the baby should see two dolls, it expects to see two
dolls, but it doesn’t and so it’s surprised. And so how the researchers know its surprised is because they
record the baby’s eye movements and depending on where it stares, that’s how they know.
So that’s what the professor talks about.”
