Questions before watching:

1. What is Nazism?
Nazism is an aggressive political and militaristic form of government including the use of
international deceit and expansionism, the arbitrary suspension of the rule of law, and arbitrary
eugenics or genocide.
2. What is Hitler’s intention to achieve for the world when he implemented Nazism?
According to Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler developed his political theories after
carefully observing the policies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was born as a citizen of
the Empire, and believed that ethnic and linguistic diversity had weakened it. Further, he saw
democracy as a destabilizing force, because it placed power in the hands of ethnic minorities,
who he claimed had incentives to further "weaken and destabilize" the Empire. The Nazi
rationale was heavily invested in the militarist belief that great nations grow from military
power, which in turn grows "naturally" from "rational, civilized cultures." Hitler's calls
appealed to disgruntled German Nationalists, eager to save face for the failure of World War
I, and to salvage the militaristic nationalist mind-set of that previous era. After Austria and
Germany's defeat of World War I, many Germans still had heartfelt ties to the goal of creating
a greater Germany, and thought that the use of military force to achieve it was necessary.
3. Did that intention reshape for the betterment of the world or deshape for the destruction of
the world?
For Hitler's perspective and for other Germans, yes because they achieved what Hitler
wants for Germany. But for me, it deshaped the betterment of the world. He implemented the
Nazism only for the greater power of Germany but how about the other countries that are
involved? Yes the Germany became better by that holocaust but the rest of the countries are
not.
4. Gather photos of those most affected by Nazism.

Questions during watching:

1. Who are the main characters? Describe each. (3 main characters)
Guido Orefice. A Jewish-Italian bookstore owner and the protagonist of the film. After he
married Dora, they begot, Giosue. He has a positive outlook and mind-set in life that everything
is going to be fine. He is fancy, goofy but serious. When he was taken to a concentration camp
along with Dora and Giosue, he tries to encourage them with his antics and machinations.
Although he knew that everything is in harm under the hands of the German, he still does fight
for his son and wife. I can say that Guido is a father figure, first because of his love for his
family. Second, he doesn't want his son to worry or to think of what situation they are into.
Lastly, the heroic sacrifices he did for his family.

Dora Orefice. Guido's wife. She insisted to go to the camp too, even though she is not Jewish.
This is because, as part of their taken wedding vows, they must not leave each other no matter
what. It was seen that she misses her husband and son so much which means that she really
loves her family, as much as Guido do. She survived the ordeal and is ultimately reunited with
her son.
Giosue Orefice. Guido and Dora's son. Giosue is occasionally skeptical of his father's fantastic
ideas, but he generally takes great joy in the magical world that Guido creates for him. He is
innocent, free from hatred, has a great trust in his patents and has a positive mind-set because
of Guido's influence of making things light though it’s not.
2. How did they, individually or group, respond to the Nazi rule?
Everybody, except Germans, is required to do what command is ordered unto them. They
responded without hesitation because Germans will kill them if they don't. Individually, they
are doing their very best to survive. As a group, they motivate each other to not to give up.
3. How can humor be a panacea for one’s suffering caused by war?
Everybody suffers from the German torture. Everyone is depressed. Their blissful lives are
gone. There is no more way to get some happiness in their situation. But Guido managed to
find happiness by his sense of humor. He shared this to most of all, especially to his son.
Giosue's anxiety was relieved from his mind because Guido brought comfort to him by his
witty jokes and goofy gestures. Therefore I can say that humor, despite of war, can be a cure
for grief.
Questions after watching:
1. Is there really a beautiful life that can thrive from the bleakness of war?
Yes, as far as the main intention of Hitler's plan and belief. After World War 1, many
Germans believed and felt a closer ties of creating a greater Germany through the use of
military forces to achieve it.
2. If there is, how can that beautiful life emerge and thrive within war?
Through the appeal of Hitler to all Germans to save the face of the nation to help him
enforce the ideologies same as the policies of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
3. How can one’s (referring to Hitler) power through his philosophy (referring to Nazism)
change the landscape of the war?
This is through strict observance and implementation of one's belief such as Hitler. By his
call to all disgruntled Germans, he was able to mold their beliefs to salvage their militaristic
nationalist thinking from the previous era.
4. What beautiful life really can sprout from war?
Since the war has ended, they will have now hope that there will be no more violence and
one day all of us will be free.
