ABSTRACT

Title: HOLISTIC CARE FOR CHILDREN WITH MENTAL RETARDATION

Author: Alice G. Velasco
Adviser: Ms. Ana Violeta De La Cruz

The main objective of this study was to assess the holistic care rendered by the primary

caregiver for children with mental retardation in terms of social, physical and psychological.

Specifically, it aimed to identify the knowledge of the respondents in caring for children with

mental retardation in terms of psychological or emotional, physical, and social. The descriptive

method of research was applied in this study, with the use of checklist Likert scale questionnaire

which was developed by the researcher. The questionnaire has two parts, the first part deals

with the knowledge of the care provider for the children who are mentally retarded, and second

is the holistic care rendered by the primary caregiver for a child with mental retardation on daily

activities. The respondents were thirty (30) primary caregiver of children with mild mental

retardation, ages 21 to 47 years old, at Harvest of hope in Lucena City and Paaralang

Elementarya ng Lucban in Lucban Quezon, who were selected through purposive sampling. The

actual data gathering was conducted on November to December of 2016. The statistical

treatment used in this study were T-test and weighted mean. The findings revealed that the

respondents according to the demographic profile as to sex are fifteen male and fifteen female

with the total of thirty respondents and equally divided. When it comes to the knowledge of the

respondents it was concluded that they are knowledgeable regarding providing care for children

with mental retardation, with social aspect as having the highest frequency percentage. The

respondents got the highest weighted mean for the social aspect as to giving holistic care for the

children with mental retardation. And lowest weighted mean is for psychological aspect. With
xiv
