ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study was to assess the holistic care rendered by the primary
caregiver for children with mental retardation in terms of social, physical and psychological.
Specifically, it aimed to identify the knowledge of the respondents in caring for children with
mental retardation in terms of psychological or emotional, physical, and social. The descriptive
method of research was applied in this study, with the use of checklist Likert scale questionnaire
which was developed by the researcher. The questionnaire has two parts, the first part deals
with the knowledge of the care provider for the children who are mentally retarded, and second
is the holistic care rendered by the primary caregiver for a child with mental retardation on daily
activities. The respondents were thirty (30) primary caregiver of children with mild mental
retardation, ages 21 to 47 years old, at Harvest of hope in Lucena City and Paaralang
Elementarya ng Lucban in Lucban Quezon, who were selected through purposive sampling. The
actual data gathering was conducted on November to December of 2016. The statistical
treatment used in this study were T-test and weighted mean. The findings revealed that the
respondents according to the demographic profile as to sex are fifteen male and fifteen female
with the total of thirty respondents and equally divided. When it comes to the knowledge of the
respondents it was concluded that they are knowledgeable regarding providing care for children
with mental retardation, with social aspect as having the highest frequency percentage. The
respondents got the highest weighted mean for the social aspect as to giving holistic care for the
children with mental retardation. And lowest weighted mean is for psychological aspect. With

regards to the correlation of demographic profile as to sex and holistic care provided by the
respondents, it shows that there are no significant relationships. Based on the findings, it was
concluded that most of primary caregiver are knowledgeable enough to care a child with mental
