ENGR 100W: Guided reading Ms.

Clare Cordero

Darius Dadfar – Week 9 Guided Reading

1. What are three key points you found interesting from Mr. Dunckel’s GreenTalk?
Explain in four or five sentences.
As engineers, we need to identify a solution to any needs and opportunities we see. This
must be done in an efficient and responsible manner with results that are well-predicted,
well-tested, and confirmed. The products and solutions that we design and finalize also
need to have their negative byproducts minimized (i.e., their Carbon footprint and how
using an alternative energy source can be a significant factor). He also talked about the
total environmental footprint from the source to the end-user/decommission stage, and
how designs need to take emissions at all stages into consideration (which relates to his
discussion on the 1st law of Thermodynamics).

Use library databases (e.g., Engineering Village, Web of Science, or Science Direct) to
find three articles that are relevant to the GreenTalk by Mr. Dunckel. You can search the
databases using keywords based on some of the points you identified in Q. 1.

2. My list of three references in APA format is:

3. Explain some of the differences between the scientific method and the
engineering design process
In the scientific method, if the analyzed data does not align with the hypothesis, the data
becomes background research for new hypotheses. This step is different in the engineer’s
method, because if a solution (analyzed data) does not align with the required needs
(hypothesis), the process is taken back to the design table with the prototypes.
However, in both methods the results are published at the end, regardless of the outcome.
