Energy audits are planned and conducted as part of the identification and prioritization of
opportunities to improve energy performance.
The objective of energy audits is to quickly and simply quantify the energy losses, expressed as
kWh/year and €/year, found in the review of a series of equipment and lines of a plant, according to
its distance from the optimal energy situation.
Different aspects of the unit or installation are reviewed, for example: state of heat insulation and
refrigeration, losses or purges of fluids, operating conditions of devices, etc.
The results found in the field energy audit represent a picture of the situation of the plant on the day
of data collection. They should reflect the actual situation encountered, regardless of whether it is
not the usual operation. Any deviation must be adequately reasoned and justified.

3 Responsibilities
[Energy manager] is responsible for:
- Make annual energy audit plans and notify the affected units.
- Determine the audit team.
- Appointing a technician to perform auditor support tasks.
- Maintain registers with auditors and related auditors, as well as auditor registers and their expertise
in each aspect of audit power.
- Collectively review ideas and establish periodic reviews of current procedures, both to improve and
refine existing processes and to include other energy consumption aspects that we consider center.
- Specify the necessary information for the audit (block diagram, process description, current
operating conditions ...).
- Track activities from audit observations, update their actions and ensure that those responsible for
the remaining actions of their plant audits follow up.
- Training for the first time auditors.
- Coordinate the post-audit meeting to ensure that the report contains a list of actions derived from
the audit.
Procedure for Energy Audit ver [version] from [date] Page 3 of 8
- Collect the necessary information to properly audit the equipment assigned to it.
- Inform the audit group of relevant facts that may complete the audit report.
- Follow up the actions derived from the Audit Action Plan assigned to it.
- Participate in the meetings for the preparation of the Action Plan and presentation of results.
4 Procedure
4.1 Energy audit planning
[Energy manager] approves an annual energy audit program, reviewing the status and importance of
operations for EnMS, as well as the results of previous audits. One or more energy audits must be
conducted for one year, ensuring the cumulative coverage of the entire EnMS scope. Energy audits
are usually done before management review.
[Energy auditor] is responsible for planning energy audits, reporting on energy audit results and
maintaining records.
[Energy manager] appoints an energy auditor and leads the group of auditors (if there are multiple
auditors for energy).
An energy audit can be a person from an organization or a person outside the organization. The
criteria for appointing an energy auditor are:
• Knowledge of the principles of energy auditing
• possesses general knowledge for specific audit areas
• Understand ISO 50001
• Essential Capacity - Achieved through education and / or experience.
Energy auditors must be selected in a manner that ensures impartiality and fairness, ie avoid conflicts
of interest, because auditors are not allowed to audit their work.
Team leaders and / or members of the auditor group determine the criteria, scope of audit and
method of auditing.
Energy audits are conducted in two phases:
• Evaluation phase
• Reporting period
Audit criteria are recommended to comply with ISO 50001 and / or align with the legal requirements
and requirements of the parties to which the organization has agreed. Data collection is done
through personal observations and / or representatives of audit, measurement and interviewing
organizations.
A checklist for energy audits can be used to conduct energy audits. The energy audit methods that
will be applied during the energy audit process are described as longitudinal testing of the level of
EnMS documents) and cross-checking between processes.
- Previous visit: It may be necessary to make a prior visit to the Center so that the audit team
familiarize with the facilities.
- Review of documentation: It is appropriate that the auditors dedicate, in collaboration with
the auditees, a time to review the main documents related to the audit.
- Initial meeting (optional): In it the audit team formally presents to the audited organization,
the objective, program and method for the development of the audit.
- Interviews and field evaluation: Taking as reference the questionnaires or audit guides of the
different elements, the audit team will conduct interviews to needed information. The
auditor will collect the evidence that will allow him to document the audit. As a complement
to the information obtained through the interviews, the auditor will obtain additional
information by direct observation of the site.
- Draft report: The audit team will prepare a draft report in which appear the observations
found, the obtained performance, and some improvement recommendations. The draft
report will be sent to the responsible of the audited area so that the definitive conclusions
are reached within the period stipulated.
4.3.3 Procedure
[The calculation energy consumption in the units and how to traduce it into kWh, € can explains as
follow:
Step 1- Watts Per Day: To calculate energy consumption costs, simply multiply the unit's wattage by
the number of hours that uor site use it to find the number of watt-hours consumed each day
Step 2- Convert to Kilowatts: Electricity is measure in kilowatt hours on our electricity bill. Step 3-
Usage Over a Month Period: Find out how much that's actually going to cost on our electric bill. In
this step, need to figure out how many kWh the TV uses per month.
Step 4-Figuring Out the Cost: Finally, pull out the last electric bill and see how much to pay per kWh.
In case have many equipment, sum of total the energy consumption by them.
Step 1: using a 125 watt television for three hours per day. By multiplying the wattage by the number
of hours used per day, finding the number is 375 watt-hours per day. 125 watts X 3 hours = 375
watt-hours per day.
Step 2: Knowing that 1 kilowatt is equal to 1,000 watts, calculating how many kWh a particular device
uses is as easy as dividing by 1,000 375 watt-hours per day / 1000 = 0.375 kWh per day.
Step 3: need to figure out how many kWh the TV uses per month 375 watt-hours per day X 30
days = 11.25 kWh per month.
Step 4: The price is 10 cents per kilowatt hour. To find how much the TV is costing in a month,
multiply your electricity rate by the kWh per month that calculated above
11.25 kWh per month X $0.10 per kWh = $1.13 per month ]
Once the data are collected, the potential savings are calculated in each case, comparing them with
the design data.
On the basis of the audit findings, the energy auditor (or energy audit team leader if there are more
energy auditors) makes an energy audit report that is delivered to [Energy manager]. It will be based
on the partial reports or annotations of the different Auditors, and will include:
The energy audit report is delivered to top management within the deadline defined by [Energy
auditor].
For each deviation found in the audit, [energy auditor] will identify one or more actions, with one
deadline and one or more responsibilities.
All these actions, will be recorded in an action plan.
Process owners must ensure that all corrective actions are proposed and their causes are met
without unnecessary delay.
Corrective actions are performed according to Incorrect Management Procedures and Corrective
Action.
Once the corrective measures are taken, if necessary, the audit trail may be conducted in accordance
with the Inconsistent Management Process and Corrective Action to assess the effectiveness or
verification of corrective actions.
