Sampling Methodology
The sampling design of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) uses the
results of 1991 Census of Agriculture (CAF) as sampling frame. The survey domain
was the province. It employs a replicated two-stage stratified sampling design. The
barangay was the primary sampling unit (psu), which was selected using a
probability proportional to size (pps) scheme. The farming household served as
the secondary sampling unit (ssu), which was selected systematically.
A non-probability survey was employed for other crops, crops other than palay and
corn. A “5 x 5” design was used in the selection of samples with the province as
the domain. The top five (5) producing municipalities were chosen from each
province.
From each of these municipalities, five (5) sample farmers were selected as
respondents. In this two-stage design, the municipalities served as the primary
sampling units (psu), and farm households as the ultimate sampling units (usu).
Data Collection
For cereals, data collection is done quarterly during the first twelve (12) days of
the month after the reference quarter. For other crops, quarterly data collection
is conducted simultaneously with the monthly Farm Prices Survey (FPS) in the last
ten (10) days of February, May, August and November.
Each round of the PCPS generates the following: (1) Final estimate of production
for the immediate past quarter of the current survey round; (2) Forecast
production for the current quarter based on standing crop; and (3) Forecast
production for the next quarter based on planting intentions of farmers.
Data review and analysis are conducted quarterly to ascertain the accuracy of the
data collected from probability and non-probability surveys. These activities start
at the Provincial Statistical Office (PSO) after data processing using the prescribed
review materials. All provincial estimates undergo further data review at the
regional level. All validated regional and provincial estimates are brought to the
Crops Statistics Division (CSD) for final review. The Deputy National Statistician
(DNS) for Sectoral Statistics Office (SSO) presides over the National Data Review
(NDR), which is participated in by the Assistant National Statistician (ANS), Division
Chiefs, Regional Statistical Services Office (RSSO) representatives and commodity
specialists.
The following concepts and definitions are used in the generation of statistics for
crops.
Area Harvested - actual area from which harvests are realized. This excludes crop
area which were totally damaged. It may be smaller than area planted. In crop
statistics, this applies to temporary crops.
Area Planted - actual physical area planted. This generally applies to area reported
for permanent crops and multi-harvest temporary crops.
Crop Production - the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular
crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged,
stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvester’s share, reserved etc.
Excluded are those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of
demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.
Effective Area Harvested - the actual area which is counted as many times as it
was planted and harvested to same crops during the reference period. This
concept applies to the harvest area reported for mono harvest temporary
crops such as rice, corn, root crops and tubers and pechay.
Industrial Crops - crops that are used as inputs to other industries. Examples are:
rubber, castor beans, abaca and oil palm.
Irrigated Palay - palay crop that requires standing water for its normal growth, not
confined to lowland but also to high places where paddies are built for
planting rice, requires irrigation water made available through artificial
means (gravity, force, power pumps, etc.)
Major Crops - refer to the top 19 crops in the Philippines, other than palay and corn
which collectively account for more than 60 percent of the total crop
production. These include coconut, sugarcane, banana, pineapple, coffee,
mango, tobacco, abaca, peanut, mungbean, cassava, sweet potato, tomato,
garlic, onion, cabbage, eggplant, calamansi and rubber.
Minor Crops - are all the remaining crops other than the major crops. This group
accounts for about 40 percent of the total crop production.
Non-Food Crops - are crops other than those used for food consumption. These are
crops grown for their aesthetic values such as ornamental plants and
cutflowers. These also include agriculture-derived products such as rice hay
and coconut leaves.
Permanent/Perennial Crops - are crops which occupy the land for a long period of
time and do not need to be replaced after each harvest such as fruit trees,
shrubs, nuts, etc. These crops may be productive or fruit-bearing crops.
Examples are: avocado, coffee, coconut and other fruit trees.
Priority Crops - refer to the identified national banner crops and various regional
priority crops of the then Key Commercial Crops Development Program
(KCCDP), High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) and now the Key
Commodity Road Maps of the Department of Agriculture, which are being
developed because of their industrial and commercial potentials.
Rainfed Palay - palay crop that depends solely upon rainfall for its water supply;
usually planted through transplanting or direct seeding in fields with dikes
that retain water. There may be dikes in the field to hold water in the case of
lowland-rainfed, or none in the case of upland palay.
Root Crops - crops with well-developed underground edible roots. They are
classified into roots and tubers. Roots which are more starchy and rich in
carbohydrates include gabi, ubi and white potato. Tubers include beets,
radish, carrots and turnips.
Temporary Crops - crops which are grown seasonally and which growing cycle less
than one year and which must be sown and planted again for production after
each harvest.
White Corn - corn grown and used mainly for human consumption, and
manufacture of corn by-products such as cornstarch, corn oil, syrup, dextrin,
glucose, gluten, etc.
Yellow Corn - corn used mainly as feed grains; includes all types of corn other
than white.

PALAY
The country’s palay production grew by 2.2 percent annually, from 16.68
million mt in 2011 to 18.15 million mt in 2015 (Figure 1). Peak production was
noted in 2014. Area harvested expanded by 0.12 million hectares in 2011-2015.
Likewise, yield improved from 3.68 mt per hectare in 2011 to 3.9 mt per hectare
in 2015.
In 2015, Central Luzon remains the major palay producer with an output of
3.30 million mt or 18.2 percent of the total palay production. This was followed by
Cagayan Valley,
13.7 percent;
Western Visayas,
11.3 percent;
and Ilocos
Region, 9.8
percent (Figure
2). These regions
shared 53.0
percent of the
total area
harvested
(Figure 3).
CORN
In 2015, corn output was registered at 7.52 million mt. Bulk of these came
from Cagayan Valley, SOCCSKSARGEN and Northern Mindanao with a combined
share of 56.7
percent of the total
corn production
(Figure 7). These
regions accounted
47.6 percent of the
total corn area
harvested in the
country (Figure 8).
White corn
production stretched
to 2.13 million mt in
2015. The major
contributors were ARMM at 0.52 million mt, Northern Mindanao at 0.41 million
mt and SOCCSKSARGEN at 0.23 million mt. These regions accounted 54.2 percent
of the total output on white corn (Figure 9).
The top yellow corn producer was Cagayan Valley at 1.76 million mt which
contributed 32.6 percent to the national output. Other top producing regions
include Northern Mindanao and SOCCSKSARGEN whic had a collective output of
include Northern
Mindanao and
SOCCSKSARGEN which
had a collective output
of 1.81 million mt
(Figure 10).
The aggregate area
harvested from these
regions is 67.7 percent
of the country’s total
harvest area.
Across crop type, Central Luzon had the highest yield at 5.73 mt per
hectare. Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley ranked next at 5.60 mt per hectare and
4.23 mt per hectare, respectively.
BANANA
Davao Region,
likewise, posted the
largest area planted at
88.28 thousand hectares
contributing 19.9 percent
of the total area planted
to banana.
This was followed by Northern Mindanao with 11.8 percent; ARMM, 7.6 percent;
SOCCSKSARGEN, 7.4 percent, and Western Visayas, 7.4 percent (Figure 13).
In 2015, Cavendish
variety recorded the biggest
production at 4.57 million mt
or a share of 50.3 percent to
total banana production.
Other major varieties of
banana produced were saba
with 28.9 percent; lakatan,
10.7 percent; and other
varieties of banana,
10.1 percent (Figure 14).
Cavendish variety.
For 2011-2015, Cavendish
production decreased by
an average rate of
0.5 percent annually.
During the same period,
area planted and number
of bearing hills grew by
1.7 percent and 1.3
percent, respectively. In
2015, production of
Cavendish at 4.57 million
mt was 2.7 percent higher
than the 2014 level of 4.45
million mt. This could be
traced to the increase in area harvested and number of bearing hills in Davao Region
and Northern Mindanao. Area planted to Cavendish banana increased by 2.0
percent, from 84.13 thousand hectares in 2014 to 85.81 thousand hectares in 2015.
Similarly, number of bearing hills increased by 1.1 percent, from 118.78 million in
2014 to 120.10 million in 2015.
In 2015, Davao Region topped all the producing regions at 2.60 million mt
representing 57.0 percent of the total Cavendish production. Northern Mindanao
came next with 26.3 percent share, followed by SOCCSKSARGEN with 10.6 percent.
Davao Region was the top producer of lakatan variety at 225.20 thousand
mt and shared 23.2 percent to total lakatan production in 2015. The other top
producers were SOCCSKSARGEN with 23.0 percent share; Northern Mindanao,
17.3 percent, and ARMM, 12.7 percent. These three regions had a collective
output of 514.90 thousand mt which represented 53.0 percent to total lakatan
production in 2015.
CALAMANSI
Calamansi production from 2011 to 2015 dropped by an average rate of 2.8
percent annually. Similarly, area planted and number of bearing trees
correspondingly declined by 1.4 percent and 2.4 percent (Figure 15). In 2015,
production of calamansi was recorded at 162.68 thousand mt, 1.2 percent higher
than the 2014 level of 160.74 thousand mt. The growth in output could be
attributed to the increase in yield in MIMAROPA (Oriental Mindoro) due to
occurrence of intermittent rains which favored flowering and fruiting.
Higher production
was also reported
in CALABARZON
(Batangas) and
Cagayan Valley
(Cagayan and
Isabela) due to
increase in number
of bearing trees. In
2015, area planted
to calamansi
decreased by
0.4 percent, from
20.07 thousand
hectares in 2014 to
19.99 thousand
hectares in 2015.
Likewise, number
of bearing trees
dropped by 2.5
percent, from 8.74
million in 2014 to
8.53 million in
2015.
MIMAROPA
registered the
highest production
at 84.21 thousand mt representing 51.8 percent of the total calamansi output in
2015. This was followed by CALABARZON with 8.0 percent; Central Luzon,
6.6 percent; Zamboanga Peninsula, 6.1 percent; and Davao Region, 5.2 percent
(Figure 16).
MANGO
From 2011 to 2015, mango production grew at an average annual rate of
3.5 percent, area planted by 0.2 percent, and number of bearing trees by 3.7
percent. In 2015, mango production reached 902.74 thousand mt which was 2.0
percent more than the 2014 level of 885.04 thousand mt (Figure 18). Production
increments could be attributed to application of flower inducers, increase in
number of bearing trees, and favorable sunny weather that enhanced fruiting in
Zamboanga Peninsula, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, and Northern Mindanao.
Ilocos Region
remained the top
mango producer at
259.53 thousand mt
and contributed 28.7
percent to the
country’s total output.
This was followed by
Zamboanga Peninsula
with 12.9 percent
share; Central Visayas,
9.6 percent; Central
Luzon, 7.6 percent;
and CALABARZON,
6.5 percent (Figure 19).
In 2015, Central Luzon posted the largest area planted at 33.54 thousand
hectares representing 17.8 percent of the total area planted to mango.
Ilocos Region came next with 11.8 percent; Davao Region, 9.7 percent;
SOCCSKSARGEN, 9.2 percent; and Zamboanga Peninsula, 9.0 percent (Figure 20).
PINEAPPLE
Pineapple production expanded at an average annual rate of 3.6 percent,
from 2.25 million mt in 2011 to 2.58 million mt in 2015. During the same period,
area planted grew by 1.8 percent (Figure 22). In 2015, pineapple production was
estimated at 2.58 million mt, 3.0 percent more than the 2014 level of 2.51 million
mt. The growth in production could be attributed to the increase in area harvested
from corporate farms in Northern Mindanao. In 2015, area planted to pineapple
grew by 1.9 percent, from 61.64 thousand hectares in 2014 to 62.81 thousand
hectares in 2015.
ABACA
During the period 2011 to 2015, production of abaca fibers increased at
an average annual rate of 0.7 percent, from 68.61 thousand metric tons in 2011 to
70.36 thousand metric tons in 2015 (Figure 25). In contrast, area planted
decreased annually by 0.9 percent. In 2015, production rose to 70.36 thousand
metric tons from 68.05 thousand metric tons in 2014 or by 3.4 percent. The biggest
increment in production was registered in Caraga by 1.15 thousand metric tons or
by 19 percent. This was attributed to good weather condition favorable for
stripping and good price in Surigao del Sur.
Bicol Region was the top producer of abaca fibers with 29.56 thousand
metric tons representing 42.0 percent to the national output. Eastern Visayas
ranked second at 12.75 thousand metric tons followed by Davao Region, Caraga,
and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with a combined output of
20.38 thousand metric tons (Figure 26).
Bicol Region had the largest area planted to abaca at 45.25 thousand
hectares or 33.7 percent. Eastern Visayas, Davao Region, Caraga and ARMM
followed with 63.00 thousand hectares or with a combined share of 46.9 percent
of the total area planted to abaca (Figure 27).
CACAO
From 2011 to 2015, cacao production grew from 4.86 thousand metric
tons in 2011 to 6.02 thousand metric tons in 2015 at an average annual rate of
5.7 percent (Figure 28). Similarly, area planted and number of bearing trees
increased annually by 10.4 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively. In 2015,
production of cacao reached 6.02 thousand metric tons, 11.0 percent higher than
the 2014 level of 5.43 thousand metric tons. This was attributed to the increased
number of bearing trees and area planted in all provinces of Davao Region.
CASHEW
Cashew production continues to show an increasing trend from
2011 to 2015 and posted an average annual rate of 11.7 percent. From 133.39
thousand metric tons in 2011, it went up to 205.53 thousand metric tons in 2015
(Figure 31). Area planted to cashew during that period also increased annually by
an average of 0.4 percent, from 28.20 thousand hectares in 2011 to 28.64
thousand hectares in 2015. However, the number of bearing trees declined by an
average annual rate of 0.1 percent, from 3.78 million trees in 2011 to 3.75 million
trees in 2015.
This was attributed to higher yield due to less rain during flowering to fruiting
stages in Palawan and the increase in bearing trees in Occidental Mindoro. During
the same year, the province of Palawan contributed 96.4 percent to the total
cashew production and accounted 90.5 percent of the total area planted.
COCONUT
Production of coconut dropped annually at an average of 0.8 percent, from
15.24 million metric tons in 2011 to 14.74 million metric tons in 2015 (Figure 34).
Area planted and number of bearing trees exhibited similar behavior, decreasing
annually by an average of 0.3 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively.
The top coconut producer was Davao Region with 2.25 million metric tons,
accounting for 15.2 percent to the national total. It was followed by Northern
Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, ARMM, and CALABARZON with a combined
output of 6.31 million metric tons (Figure 35).
COFFEE
From 2011 to 2015, production of dried coffee berries of all variety
decreased at an average annual rate of 4.8 percent, area planted by 1.2 percent,
and number of bearing trees by 1.8 percent (Figure 37). Coffee production slowed
down by 4.1 percent, from 75.45 thousand metric tons in 2014 to 72.34 thousand
metric tons in 2015. CALABARZON registered the biggest drop of 2.42 thousand
metric tons due to the effect of heavy rains during flowering stage in Cavite.
In SOCCSKSARGEN, production contracted by 1.04 thousand metric tons due to
cutting and pruning of old and less productive trees and lower yield due to the
effect of dry spell during the first semester of 2015 in Sultan Kudarat.
In 2015,
SOCCSKSARGEN
continued to be
the top producer
of coffee with
26.96 thousand
metric tons
representing
37.3 percent of
the national total
(Figure 38). This
was followed by
Davao Region
with 11.68 thousand metric tons and ARMM with 10.53 thousand metric tons.
These three (3) regions also topped in terms of area planted, combining a total of
58.02 thousand
hectares or sharing
51.0 percent to the
country’s total area
planted to coffee
(Figure 39).
Of all the coffee varieties, Robusta coffee reported the biggest production
at 49.85 thousand metric tons or a share of 68.9 percent (Figure 40). This was
followed by Arabica coffee with 17.43 thousand metric tons, Excelsa coffee with
4.55 thousand metric tons, and Liberica coffee with 0.51 thousand metric tons.
Excelsa coffee. Throughout the period 2011 to 2015, production of Excelsa coffee
declined at an annual average rate of 6.3 percent. From 5.92 thousand metric tons
in 2011, it was down to 4.55 thousand metric tons in 2015. Similarly, area planted
and number of bearing trees decreased annually at an average rate of 3.2 percent
and 4.1 percent, respectively. In 2015, production reduced to 4.55 thousand
metric tons from 4.73 thousand metric tons in 2014 or by 3.8 percent.
RUBBER
During the period 2011 to 2015, production of rubber cup lump
decreased at an average annual rate of 1.5 percent, from 425.70 thousand metric
tons in 2011 to 398.14 thousand metric tons in 2015 (Figure 41). On the other
hand, area planted expanded by an average annual rate of 8.5 percent, from
161.57 thousand hectares in 2011 to 222.60 thousand hectares in 2015. Further,
number of tappable trees grew annually, from 42.06 million trees in 2011 to 56.26
million trees in 2015 or by an average rate of 7.6 percent.
Zamboanga Peninsula was the top producer of rubber in 2015 with 176.77
thousand metric tons followed by SOCCSKSARGEN with 126.26 thousand metric
tons. These two (2) regions had a combined output of 303.04 thousand metric tons
which accounted for 76.1 percent of the national rubber production (Figure 42).
Their combined area and number of tappable trees had corresponding shares of
67.7 percent and 76.0 percent, respectively, to the national totals (Figure 43).
SUGARCANE
Sugarcane production went down annually at an average of 5.1 percent,
from 28.38 million metric tons in 2011 to 22.93 million metric tons in 2015.
Area harvested during the period also decreased annually at an average of
1.1 percent, from 439.70 thousand hectares in 2011 to 421.31 thousand hectares
in 2015 (Figure 44).
TOBACCO
Production of tobacco increased at an average annual rate of 6.1 percent, from
44.94 thousand metric tons in 2011 to 56.19 metric tons in 2015. Similarly, area
planted increased annually at an average of 0.8 percent, from 32.23 thousand
hectares in 2011 to 33.10 thousand hectares in 2015 (Figure 47). However,
production of tobacco in 2015 slowed down to 56.19 thousand metric tons
from 61.42 thousand metric tons in 2014 or by 8.5 percent. In Cagayan Valley,
production of tobacco contracted by 4.34 thousand metric tons or by 27.18
percent due to lesser area harvested as a result of the limited financial support to
farmers by Universal Leaf Tobacco Corporation during the first semester in
Isabela.
Production in
MIMAROPA also
reduced by
1.20 thousand
metric tons or
44.4 percent due to
decrease in
area harvested in
Occidental Mindoro
brought about by
limited financial
assistance to
farmers from
Philip Morris-Fortune Tobacco Corporation (PMFTC).
Ilocos Region was the major producer of tobacco with 39.40 thousand
metric tons contributing 70.1 percent to the national tobacco production. It was
followed by Cagayan Valley with 11.63 thousand metric tons and Northern
Mindanao with 1.81 thousand metric tons (Figure 48). Ilocos Region as the top
producer shared the biggest area planted with 23.22 thousand hectares or 70.2
percent of the country’s total area planted to tobacco. Cagayan Valley ranked
second with 5.54 thousand hectares or 16.7 percent (Figure 49).
CABBAGE
Production of cabbage from 2011 to 2015 slightly increased by an average
annual rate of 0.1 percent. On the other hand, area harvested decreased by
1.1 percent. In 2015, production of cabbage was recorded at 125.75 thousand mt,
1.7 percent lower than the 2014 level of 127.99 thousand mt (Figure 51).
The biggest drop was recorded in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) by
2.2 percent or by 2.21 thousand mt which was attributed to the adverse effects of
Typhoons “Ineng” and “Lando” in Benguet and Mountain Province during the
second semester of 2015. Total area harvested to cabbage was estimated at
8.18 thousand hectares in 2015 which was lower by 1.6 percent compared to
8.31 thousand hectares in 2014.Total area harvested to cabbage was estimated at
8.18 thousand hectares in 2015 which was lower by 1.6 percent compared to 8.31
thousand hectares in 2014.
CAR remained the top cabbage producing region with 97.31 thousand mt
which represented 77.4 percent of the 2015 national output. This was followed by
Central Visayas with 6.8 percent share; Northern Mindanao, 5.3 percent, Davao
Region, 3.4 percent; and Ilocos Region, 2.6 percent (Figure 52).
CAR, the top producing region, likewise, posted the largest area
harvested in 2015 at 5.27 thousand hectares accounting for 64.5 percent of the
national total (Figure 53).
CASSAVA
For the period 2011-2015, production and area harvested to cassava grew
at respective average annual rates of 5.3 percent and 0.2 percent (Figure 54). In
2015, production of cassava was estimated at 2.71 million mt, 6.9 percent higher
than the 2014 level of 2.54 million mt. This could be attributed to the increase in
area harvested in Northern Mindanao and Cagayan Valley due to sustained high
demand on cassava for industrial use. Higher production was also noted in Central
Visayas due to planting of high yielding variety in Bohol. Total area harvested to
cassava grew by 2.9 percent, from 216.78 thousand hectares in 2014 to
222.99 thousand hectares in 2015.
ARMM, the biggest producer, likewise, had the biggest area harvested at
97.27 thousand hectares representing 43.6 percent to total cassava area in 2015.
This was followed by Northern Mindanao, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas and Cagayan
Valley (Figure 56).
EGGPLANT
Throughout the period 2011-2015, production of eggplant posted an
upward trend at an average annual rate of 2.9 percent. During the same period,
area planted slightly dropped by 0.4 percent (Figure 57). In 2015, production of
eggplant went up by 3.2 percent, from 225.58 thousand mt in 2014 to
232.86 thousand mt.
In Ilocos Region, this
could be attributed to
the increase in area
planted due to good
price, sustained
demand, and seeds
distribution by the
Department of
Agriculture and Local
Government Units
(DA and LGUs). In
CALABARZON, the
higher output was brought about by the increase in yield in Quezon due to the
occurrence of intermittent rains during flowering and fruiting. The increase in
production in Central Luzon was due to planting of good quality seeds, efficient
use of fertilizer, and control of pests and diseases in Nueva Ecija. Total area
planted to eggplant at 21.01 thousand hectares in 2015 was 0.7 percent below
the 21.16 thousand hectares level in 2014.
Ilocos Region was the leading eggplant producer with 81.94 thousand mt
and shared 35.2 percent to the national total. This was followed by CALABARZON
with 16.5 percent; Central Luzon, 10.2 percent; Cagayan Valley, 9.0 percent; and
Western Visayas, 7.3 percent (Figure 58).
Ilocos Region had the largest area planted at 5.04 thousand hectares
representing 24.0 percent share to the national total. Other top regions in terms
of area planted in 2015 were Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, and
CALABARZON (Figure 59).
GARLIC
From 2011 to 2015, production of garlic grew at an average annual rate
of 3.8 percent. On the other hand, area harvested declined by 0.6 percent (Figure
60). In 2015, garlic production increased to 10.42 thousand mt from 8.99 thousand
mt in 2014 or by 15.9 percent. The highest increment was recorded in Ilocos
Region by 21.0 percent or by 1.26 thousand mt as some areas in Ilocos Norte were
shifted away from the production of other crops due to seeds distribution by the
DA and LGUs and by private institutions such as the Vegetable Importers,
Exporters, and Vendors Association of the Philippines (VIEVA Phils. Inc.).
Moreover, bigger and good quality bulbs were harvested in the province due to
lesser occurrence of thrips and bulb rot disease. In 2015, total area harvested to
garlic at 2.74 thousand hectares was 7.4 percent higher than the 2.56 thousand
hectares level in 2014.
MUNGBEAN/MONGO
Production of mungbean from 2011 to 2015 grew by an average rate of
0.5 percent annually. On the other hand, area harvested dropped at an annual
average rate of 2.2 percent. In 2015, production of mungbean at 33.62 thousand
mt was 4.6 percent higher than the 32.14 thousand mt output level in 2014 (Figure
63). This could be traced to the increase in area planted in Cagayan Valley due to
seeds distribution by the DA and LGUs. Moreover, in Central Luzon, the higher
output was due to the expansion in area planted in Tarlac due to sustained
demand and in Western Visayas, particularly in Iloilo, the utilization of some areas
previously planted with palay. Total area planted to mungbean at 41.45 thousand
hectares in 2015 was lesser by 3.6 percent compared to 42.98 thousand hectares
in 2014.
ONION
During the period 2011-2015, production of onion went up by an average
annual rate of 11.4 percent while area harvested by 0.5 percent (Figure 66).
In 2015, production of onion at 181.21 thousand mt was 11.0 percent lower than
the 2014 level of 203.65 thousand mt. The biggest drop in production was
reported in Central Luzon by 18.6 percent or by 26.44 thousand mt attributed to
lesser area planted in Nueva Ecija due to farmers’ anticipation of low price.
Likewise, area harvested to onion declined by 6.2 percent, from 15.84 thousand
hectares in 2014 to 14.86 thousand hectares in 2015.
PEANUT
From 2011 to 2015, production and area harvested to peanut declined
annually at an average rates of 0.5 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively
(Figure 69). In 2015, production of peanut slightly dropped to 29.19 thousand mt
from 29.20 thousand mt in 2014. This could be attributed to the decrease in yield
in Ilocos Region (Pangasinan) due to intense heat and lesser areas planted in
Northern Mindanao (Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte) due to insufficient rains
during the planting season. In Cagayan Valley (Cagayan), the slight decrease in
production was due to the increase in yield in Cagayan Valley (Cagayan) due to
introduction of new varieties and technical assistance from Cagayan Valley
Research Center (CVRC). Area harvested to peanut decreased to 24.58 thousand
hectares in 2015 from 25.05 thousand hectares in 2014 or by 1.9 percent.
Ilocos Region being the top peanut producer, likewise, registered the
largest area harvested at 7.51 thousand hectares contributing 30.5 percent. Other
major producing regions were Western Visayas, Cagayan Valley, Northern
Mindanao, and Bicol Region (Figure 71).
SWEET POTATO/CAMOTE
Sweet potato production grew at an average annual rate of 1.0 percent
from 2011 to 2015. On the other hand, area harvested dropped by an average
of 4.6 percent annually. In 2015, sweet potato production was estimated at
536.0 thousand mt, 3.10 percent more than the 2014 level of 519.86 thousand
mt (Figure 72). Increases could be attributed to additional area harvested in
Eastern Visayas (Leyte) and Western Visayas (Iloilo) due to sustained demand,
bigger tubers harvested in Bicol Region (Albay) due to sufficient soil moisture,
and use of good quality planting materials in Central Luzon (Tarlac).
Eastern Visayas topped all the sweet potato producing regions with 111.87
thousand mt representing 20.9 percent to the total production. The other major
producers were Bicol Region with 16.9 percent; Central Luzon, 8.8 percent,
Western Visayas, 8.6 percent, and Northern Mindanao, 6.4 percent (Figure 73).
The top regions in terms of area harvested were Eastern Visayas, Bicol
Region, Western Visayas, Central Luzon, and Central Visayas (Figure 74).
TOMATO
Tomato production grew from 203.58 thousand mt in 2011 to 214.77
thousand mt in 2015 at an average annual rate of 1.4 percent. In 2015, tomato
production improved by 0.09 percent, from 214.57 thousand mt in 2014 to
214.77 thousand mt this year (Figure 75). The growth in production could be
attributed to the expansion in area planted in Western Visayas (Iloilo) due to
sustained demand and in Cagayan Valley (Nueva Vizcaya) due to availability of
seeds from the DA and LGUs. In Central Luzon, the increase could be traced to
additional area planted in Bulacan attributed to better price; and in Nueva Ecija
and Pampanga due to efficient use of fertilizer and control of pests and diseases.
The slight increase was brought about by the decrease in area planted in
Northern Mindanao (Bukidnon) due to late onset of rains during the first quarter
and the occurrence of soft rot and anthracnose diseases in Ilocos Region (Ilocos
Norte) during the second quarter of 2015.
Ilocos Region, the top tomato producer with 72.48 thousand mt shared
33.7 percent to the national tomato production. The other major producers were
Northern Mindanao, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Western Visayas
(Figure 76).
The top five (5) tomato producing regions also recorded the largest area
planted with 11.58 thousand hectares and comprised 71.6 percent to total tomato
area in 2015 (Figure 77).
OTHER VEGETABLES
From 2011 to 2015, production of lettuce and broccoli were increasing at
an average annual rates of 2.2 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively, while
asparagus dropped by an average of 4.4 percent (Figure 78). In 2015, the drop in
lettuce production by 6.2 percent was attributed to lesser area harvested in
Northern Mindanao (Bukidnon) due to the effect of dry spell during the first
semester. In CAR (Benguet), the decrease was brought about by the adverse effect
of Typhoons “Ineng” and “Lando” during the second semester of 2015. Likewise, the
drop in broccoli production by 5.0 percent could be attributed to the effect of
Typhoons “Ineng” and “Lando” in CAR particularly in the provinces of Benguet and
Mountain Province. For asparagus, the decline in output of 6.7 percent was
attributed to non-harvesting in some areas in SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato) due
to low demand.
Production of yam
dropped by 9.5 percent,
from 15.25 thousand mt in
2014 to 13.80 thousand mt
in 2015. This could be
attributed to harvesting in
the Central Visayas (Bohol)
in the fourth quarter of
2014 due to early planting
caused by the early onset of
rainfall. For ginger, the drop
in production of 2.1 percent
could be attributed to
lesser area harvested in Cagayan Valley (Nueva Vizcaya and Cagayan) due to
flooding caused by Typhoon “Lando.” Moreover, some farmers in Northern
Mindanao (Lanao del Norte) were not able to plant due to insufficient supply of
water during the planting season. For habitchuelas, the drop in production of 3.7
percent was due to the adverse effect of Typhoon “Ineng” and “Lando” in CAR
(Benguet and Mountain Province).
