Reading: This week we will begin reading historical fiction. Our read aloud will
be Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Students will be answering questions for
comprehension. They may benefit from having their own copy to follow along
with and reference, or they can review the chapters we’ve read using an
online read aloud (http://bit.ly/2rBkvKp ). Students will be working in book
clubs to read and analyze historical fiction. Through this they will focus on
analyzing characters and other story elements, determining the theme of
the story, understanding vocabulary in context and discussing the impact
point of view has on a story.
Social Studies: Week 16: This week students will learn that immigrants were
drawn to America from all over Europe. Students will also learn that a group
called the Regulators formed to fight unfair government control. Students will
study the Battle of Alamance as the final conflict between the Regulators
and the militia.
Writing: We continue our research for writing. Students will begin turning
their notes into paragraphs with guidance and modeling. Please remember,
this writing work will happen at school.
Science: After our Earth in the Universe unit test on Monday, we will begin a
new unit on Energy Conservation. Students will begin recognizing that
energy takes various forms. They will see that the basic forms of energy are
light, sound, heat, electrical, and magnetic.
