[CF6-80C2A5F] ENGINE VENTS AND DRAINS - INSPECTION/CHECK
1. General
A. This procedure gives inspection conditions for fluid leakage from engine components
and strut compartments connected to the drain system. Correction instructions for
unwanted leakage are also given.
B. Most of the accessory and component drains are connected to the drain manifold. At
the drain manifold, each drain drains through a different sampling plug down to the
drain mast. To find the leakage rate for these drains, the following must be done :
(1) Operate the engine at idle power or takeoff power (as required) and write the
quantity of time the engine is operated.
(2) Collect the fluids from the drain manifold (oil and fuel) into containers and
measure the quantity collected.
(3) Find the leakage rate from the quantity of fluid collected and the written time
of engine operation.
C. Leakage from drains connected directly to the drain mast can be measured by
counting the drops from the drain mast after engine operation at idle power.
CAUTION : CAPPING OF DRAINS THAT ARE LEAKING FUEL IS NOT
PERMITTED. DO NOT
DO MORE THAN THE MAXIMUM CYCLE LIMITATION WITH CAPPED
DRAINS.
CAPPED DRAINS CAUSE FLUID TO COLLECT IN THE SEAL DRAIN
CAVITY.
THIS CAN CAUSE MORE SEAL FAILURE AND CONTAMINATION OF
THE ENGINE
OIL AND/OR ACCESSORIES. UNWANTED FLUID LEVELS IN THE
SEAL DRAIN
CAVITY CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE INSIDE THE COWLING.
D. Some accessory pad drains can be capped. The drain line is disconnected from the
drain pad port and both the port and the line are capped for a maximum of 10 cycles
under the following conditions. Replace seals that leak as soon as possible.
(1) Starter Drive Pad Drain - the drain can be capped.
(2) Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) Pad Drain - the drain can be capped only if
oil leakage is apparent from the accessory gearbox carbon seal.
Examine the IDG oil level to make sure oil leakage is not from the IDG (Ref.
24-11-00, P. Block 601 ) .
(3) Hydraulic Pump Drive Pad Drain - if hydraulic fluid leakage above the
allowable limits, replace the pump (Ref. 29-11-32, P. Block 401 ) . If engine
oil leakage is above the allowable limits, then stop leakage by replacing the
accessory gearbox seal (Ref. 72-65-00, P. Block 801 ) .
(4) Fuel Pump Drive Pad Drain - stop leakage with a plug if oil leakage is
apparent.
(5) Hydromechanical Unit (HMU) Drive Pad Drain - stop leakage with a plug if oil
is apparent.

ITEM DESIGNATION
A. Access Platform
B. Circuit Breaker Safety Clips
C. Regulated Air Pressure Supply
D. Container 1 gallon (4 liter) capacity, applicable for
fuel and oil, local purchase
E. 1 cup (250 cc) capacity,
applicable for fuel and oil, local
purchase (quantity necessary to isolate drain
sources)
F. Cylinder Graduated, 250 cc capacity, 1 cc

Referenced Procedures applicable for fuel and oil, local purchase
ITEM DESIGNATION
(a) Remove the sampling plug from the drain manifold of the suspected
leaking component or disconnect the drain line from the suspected
source component.
(b) Put a one-cup (250 cc) container below each source component or
below the drain manifold. Make sure the containers will not touch the
closed cowls or thrust reverser halves.
(c) Close the thrust reverser halves (Ref. 71-13-00, P. Block 301 ) .
(d) Prepare and start the engine as instructed for usual engine
operation (Ref. 71-00-00, P. Block 501 ) .
(e) Let the engine become stable at ground idle and make a record of the
amount of time the engine operates.
(f) Stop the engine as instructed for usual engine operation (Ref.
71-00-00, P. Block 501 ) .
(g) Open the thrust reverser halves, as applicable (Ref. 71-13-00, P.
Block 301 ) .
(h) Remove the containers at each component and/or port of the drain
manifold.
(j) Measure the fluid quantity in each container with a graduated
cylinder.
(k) From the time record of engine operation, find the leakage rate of
each component.
(l) Connect all the disconnected drain tubes or sampling plugs.
(12) Correct all leakage problems.
(13) Close the thrust reverser halves, as applicable (Ref. 71-13-00, P. Block
301 ) .

NOTE : If the engine oil consumption is more than the limits (Ref. 71-00-00, P.
Block 501 ) , remove the engine (Ref. 71-00-00, P. Block 401 ) .
NOTE : Engine oil vapors from the oil vents can condense and collect at the
bottom of the turbine rear frame and exhaust centerbody after an engine
shutdown, during an engine windmill action, or during an engine motor
