1. (a) Derive the expression for vector differential operator ∇ in cylindrical and spherical coordinates.
(b) Derive expressions for ∇.v, ∇v, ∇×v and ∇.(∇v) in cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Where v is a vector.
2. Flow through an inclined tube: Consider the steady-state, laminar flow of fluid of constant density and viscosity
in an inclined tube of length L and radius R as shown in Fig. 1. The liquid flows downward under the influence of
a pressure difference (P0 – PL) and gravity. We specify that the tube length be very large with respect to the tube
radius, so that "end effects" will be unimportant throughout the tube. Make a differential momentum balance and
apply appropriate boundary conditions to obtain
(a) The expression for momentum-flux.
(b) The expression for velocity distribution.
3. Flow through Couette cell: Consider the steady-state, laminar flow of fluid of constant density and viscosity in
Couette cell as shown in Fig. 2. The inner wall is rotating with an angular velocity and the outer wall stays
stationary. Make a differential momentum balance and apply appropriate boundary conditions to obtain
(a) The expression for momentum-flux.
(b) The expression for velocity distribution. (Hint: vr = 0, vz = 0, and v = v (r))
4. Flow through parallel plates: A Newtonian fluid is in laminar flow in a narrow slit formed by two parallel walls a
distance 2B apart. The two plates are moving with v0 velocity in the positive x-direction. The pressure at both ends
is the same, so that the fluid moves through the annular region solely because of the plate motion. Make a differential
momentum balance and apply appropriate boundary conditions to obtain
(a) The expression for momentum-flux.
(b) The expression for velocity distribution.
