It is Benign & Harmless

Niacin (Vitamin B3) is vital for over 50 different processes in our body and is an essential vitamin for human health
mainly due to its many enzymatic functions.  For more information see Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Even at high doses, niacin is safe. However, at a higher dose there is a common, but harmless, side-effect known as
the “Niacin Flush.”  The skin becomes red, warm and is often accompanied by a burning sensation and occasionally
some itching. It may feel as though you have a sunburn.

It is best to begin by taking Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in lower dosages at first, and slowly build up over time.

Don't be Afraid of the Niacin Flush

Most people find that starting with 50 mg once per day for a week, then twice a day for another week before
progressing to 100 mg, is a comfortable way to go.

You could then repeat the progression with 100 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, etc.

The Niacin Flush Usually Begins On Your Scalp, Ears, and Face

You will feel a slight burning sensation, and your face may turn “reddish” in color or “splotchy”. Slowly, this sensation,
along with the discoloration, may move down your body, usually stopping at your chest and arms. However, if you take
too large of a dose too soon, it may flush your entire body.

Again, even if the flushing is extreme, though uncomfortable, it will go away and is harmless.

The duration of the flushing depends on the severity of it but usually lasts from ten minutes to thirty minutes.  I some
cases it could last for an hour or two.

Drinking Extra Water Helps Reduce The Flushing Sensation

Make sure that the water you are drinking is filtered and not tap water. Besides reducing the flushing sensation, the
added water helps the body to rid itself of toxins. (See Niacin and Detox) Drinking tap water rather than filtered
may add more toxins to your body.

The Flushing Effect Resolves Over Time

Your body does “get used to” a specific dose of niacin over time. So at some point, the Niacin flush will no longer
occur as it once did. For example, in about a week, your body will “get used to” 50 mg once per day, and you will no
longer experience a flushing.

Keep in mind, that each time you increase the dose, you can expect the Niacin flush to start again.

Some advocates of niacin say taking an aspirin thirty minutes or so before taking the niacin helps to reduce the flushing
effect. Although this does seem to be effective, I would not recommend this practice. Getting in the habit of eating
food and drinking plenty of filtered water before taking the niacin is a much healthier practice.

Remember, when it comes to certain health conditions it is the “flush” that is the desired effect, so Extended Release
Niacin is not effective. Such is the case with multiple sclerosis.

Thank you. Very helpful…took my first one before doing enough research to know about the ‘flush’ and thought I was
having some serious allergic reaction. This has calmed my nerves to know this is a normal reaction…. I feel there
should be a warning on the label, but regardless, thank you for this information and I hope it ends soon.

50 mg twice a day and 100 mg are the same thing. ?

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

SEP 27, 2015 @ 07:17:15

Yes, and no. If you are not use to the niacin flush, it is better to start slow. Taking 50 mg twice per day
allows you to get use to the flushing effect, whereas if you take 100 mg per day, you will likely get a
strong flush.

I have been taking 500 mg every night. My doctor did not start me out in low doses, so I had no idea what was about to
happen to me. I had maybe 3 nights where it is was tolerable one night of almost no reaction, and then last night, I was
to the point of calling 911. It was terrifying and i could not cool it down for nothing. it lasted 2 1/2 hours. My hair would
touch my neck and I would loose my breath due to the pain. I was in the cold shower shivering and burning at the same
time. I was in tears and scared to death. I was sure I was going to die. It was shear agony and fear. Laying in bed
talking to myself out loud that I was going to be ok, and to calm down….over and over again. I may not have the
nerves to take another pill again. So for doctors to say that this is just an ‘uncomfortable’ side effect is a bit sweet. For
me my reaction was way too intense.

OCT 10, 2015 @ 09:13:30

Hello, 500 mg to start is way too much! Starting with 50 mg is a very different experience, and then
SLOWLY build up to 500 mg. Though your reaction was intense at that high dose, it was also benign.

I tried niacin a month ago and had a flush. When I had my second flush a month ago after that I was experience a
weird feeling inside for 5 days . My eyes and nostrils burned a little and feeling of burning in my chest. Now tried again
month later and had flush yesterday and feeling a little burning in chest today. Question do you think it could be
because I took vitamin c with it. I don’t remember having this the first time I took. Really not sure whats going on.

Thank God for this website. This just happened to me 20 minutes ago. I contacted my family to let them know I was on
my way to ER when I remembered a friend saying this happened to him when he took niacin. I had the presence of
mind to consider new supplements I’m taking BEFORE racing to hospital. Read ingredients, and sure enough. (I’m
seeing a new holistic practitioner who gave me a supplement that contains 100mg niacin.) Yours was the first website
that came up in my Google search of “niacin flush.” It describes EXACTLY what just happened to me, including the
progression from scalp to face to arms and below. FYI, the burning (which was sunburn-level painful) stopped at my
arms and torso, BUT the hives/flush continued down my legs. Panic over — kind of. My practitioner is about to get an
earful. Thank you, again.

WOW This is crazy! I took 50mg with about 50mg of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) not knowing that it would cause a flush.
My face started burning and i tried to throw it up but couldn’t so i stuck my head under the sink and turned on cold
water thinking that would help. When it got worse I thought I was going to die and almost went to ER but decided to
look up online to see what could cause this, good thing I found your site on google, after about 15 min the burning

sensation went all the way down to my feet. But seriously why would anyone want to take niacin when there’s
niacinamide that’s a different form of b3 without the flushing side effect!

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

JAN 29, 2016 @ 09:32:37

Hello, the health effects from niacin and niacinamide are different.

“In some cases, niacinamide is used when people are concerned about or unable to tolerate the
flushing effect. Also, those who have Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) are often told to use
niacinamide instead. However, more recent studies are now showing that niacin may be safe even for
those individuals. (See Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus and Niacin.)

Niacinamide is NOT as effective as niacin in lowering cholesterol. However, both niacin and
niacinamide are equally as effective in treating other conditions such as pellagra, schizophrenia,
arthritis, and autoimmune disorders.”

Is there an ideal time to take niacin? I presently am taking 1000 mg each night just before going to bed. I’d say that
about 25% of the time I get the flushing sensation and thereby loose sleep. Should I take the dose around dinner time
instead?

After watching the documentary ” Food Nation ” last night and hearing the amazing things Niacin does for the body, I of
course ran out and bought a bottle today. In the documentary, it says that 3000mg is a good dose for helping anxiety
and depression. Well, thinking that 3000mg was the proper dose, I decided to start off with 1000mg. Bad idea. My face
started burning, then my ears, neck, and down my arms. Panic mode set in. I was sure that death was knocking on my
doorstep. I went to the walk-in clinic within an hour. I thought FOR SURE that I was having a terrible reaction and was
going to die ( I owe part of that to my anxiety ). I should have read this before I took 1000mg! It has been about 5
hours since this whole ordeal, and I am still a little itchy and red, but not on the cusp of certain death ( or so I thought ).
lesson learned. When my fear of Niacin calms down, I may try it again, but with a MUCH smaller dose.

FEB 29, 2016 @ 11:18:37

I started taking a slow release Niacin on Feb 6th and because I knew of the “flush” I take it at night. Well, just like
Duane, I too experienced “FLUSH” for the first time, last night, 3 weeks since I started taking it. I woke up about 2.5 hrs
after taking it around 10 p.m. I felt very warm, it felt like I had was sunburned. I knew I had not been out in the sun but
couldn’t figure out what was going on. I got up looked at myself in the mirror OMG I looked like a cooked lobster. Still
not realizing what was going on I took my temperature but it was normal. I was hot but was still cold enough to not want
to get into a cool shower. So I slathered aloe vera all over myself. It was weird because I was red only where a swim
suit would not lay. My abdomen was not so red but my face was on fire, my neck, my arms, my chest, my upper back
and my legs. I never itched but the fire feeling on my body was a little difficult to work through before I could fall back to
sleep. This morning 10 hrs after my “dose” of 500mg I still have a pink tinge to my skin. I would like to continue taking it
but am a little nervous about doing so. The only think I can think that may have sped up the release was I had a large
glass of homemade fresh squeezed lemonade about 2-3 hrs before taking the Niacin. Please advise. Thanks PS: I
found your site in the middle of the night when I was trying to figure out what was going on with me. I don’t have
insurance so I try to do holistic whenever possible. Thank you so much for this site.

As far as potential liver issues, do you think its safer to take niacin 2 times a day rather than 3 or does it not matter?

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

MAR 05, 2016 @ 08:10:08

3000 mg is WAY to high a dose to begin with, and unlikely that a dose that high is ever needed. For
depression, I would suggest inositol. Check this out: https://www.onlineholistichealth.com/inositol-
deficiency-linked-to-depression/

Like many others on here, I thought I was having a reaction like Will Smith in the movie Hitch. I was totally unprepared
and took 500mgs of Niacin on an empty stomach like an idiot. Thank you for assuring me I am not dying. I am adding
Niacin and B12 for metabolic purposes. Would you suggest that I now lower the dose or keep at 500 since I already
had one flush? Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

MAR 23, 2016 @ 13:29:05

Hello Kelli, Yes I can certainly understand how that could be scary! I would recommend that you
decrease the dosage to at least 100 mg for at least a week before SLOWLY increasing the dosage by
50 mg. until your desired dosage. If you still experience the flush at lower dosages, then there is no
need to increase further. I hope that helps!

taking 1000mg and still no flush. I’ve just tried 1500mg after my dinner and waiting for a flush but I dont think it’s
happening. What does this mean? I need more? Does the flush matter that much?

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

MAR 25, 2016 @ 09:28:51

Hi Susan! How much did you take?

Dr. Michelle Kmiec

MAR 25, 2016 @ 09:48:24

Just to confirm, you are taking niacin and not niacinamide right? 1500 mg of niacin is certainly the
lower end of a therapeutic dosage. Many things can factor in regarding if you experience a flush or not.
The amount or type of food (salad vs a protein) consumed, how hydrated you are, and even the
amount of stress you are experiencing at any given moment. There are 2 theories of thought as to why
we flush or not, and they are actually the exact opposite of each other. 1. If you do not flush, then you
are deficient and require a higher dosage. 2. If you do not flush then you have plenty of niacin in your
system. As you can see, that alone is very confusing because how do you tell which category you fall
in. However those theories do not take in account some of the reasons for flushing or not that I have
just given. Further, it doesn’t take in account the amount of the niacin that you are taking in. If you are
just starting taking niacin at low dosages such as 50 – 100 mg, and do not flush, then increasing your
dosages is the logical thing to do. However in your case, at a much higher dosage, for the time being, it
is likely that you have sufficient niacin in your system (given food intake, hydration and stress levels
have remained consistent). I hope this helps!

I took a prenatal with 20 MG for 2 years with no problems. Then my pharmacy stopped carrying it and changed my
script to a similar vitamin. For the last 8 months I have taken the pill with 20 MG niacin as well however I breakout
every single time unless I take it at midnight when I don’t have anything to eat for 3 hours before or after. I’ve tried
several times to take in the morning but the rash got worse and spread to my arms. My body refuses to adjust to such
anything low dose. My new prenatal has only 1.8 MG. Hopefully I can live flush free now.

I know someone who is taking niacin to cleanse illegal drugs out of their system (THC) in order to pass random drug
tests at work. I feel this is nonsense, and my wife and I have been telling him to stop taking it because he is in pain

Can this harm his liver?

APR 27, 2016 @ 17:25:12

Hello! I just took my first time-release niacin tablet today. The dose was 250 MG, and I did experience some flushing,
but nothing crazy. Anyway, WebMD suggests the following dosages:

Children: between 2-16 milligrams daily, depending on age

Men: 16 milligrams daily
Women: 14 milligrams daily
Women (pregnant): 18 milligrams daily
Women (breastfeeding): 17 milligrams daily
Maximum daily intake for adults of all ages: 35 milligrams daily

Those dosages are very low, compared to what I plan to take (250 MG for 20 days, then 500 MG daily after that). What
do you think? Thank you for your input!

and tonight had a flush for the first time. I thought it was a sunburn but I don’t go in the sun. I thought it was roseacea
which I have a very very mild case of but then I felt effects on my neck, chest and arms and got very itchy. I was
getting more and more uncomfortable. I looked in the mirror and was bright red and almost swollen from the waist up. I
thought I was having an allergic reaction and I thought seriously about runnning to my house alarm pad to summon an

however, she is not well versed with POTS and PVCs, etc. I am afraid of what flushing could do with my arrhythmia
problems. I would appreciate any advice.

Hello Steve, sorry to hear this though 5 mg is an extremely small amount for example…fish has around
14 mg and chicken around 22 mg of vitamin B3 (niacin). Sounds like there is a lot more to your story
that I’d love for you to share. What type of niacin was it? What else was in the niacin. What meds (if
any) do you take. What is the condition of your health? Having a severe reaction to such a small
amount is like having an allergic reaction to a glass of water. So I would love to hear more of this.

HI!!!

I found this website AFTER my $100 E.D. visit today. My Niacin supplement directions state that two capsules should
be taken on an empty stomach. They are time-release, but I do not recall the dosage.

I was looking for an energy boost, as Mt. Dew, chai tea and Monster no long help to keep me going. A full time job,
blending of homes as my husband and I just moved last week and are bringing 4 children together (we have been
married for 2 years and just found a home for all of us to live together for the first time), very little family support and
working on changes to custody, I need a supplement to help me stay awake and be more productive! E.D. gave me 4
chewable baby aspirin around 11:15 AM, and sent me back to work. Now I just feel like a wet rag with LESS energy
than I had this morning before (I thought I was going to burst into flames!!).

I will certainly try a lower dosage of niacin (after I’m over being traumatized from today!) Any suggestions for natural
energy supplements that won’t end up costing an additional $100 and a trip to the E.D.?!?!

Thank you!!

Hi, I’ve been taking 1500 mg of niacin for like a year now. 3 x 500 mg a day. My doctor recommended it to me because
of something in my blood work being high.

The niacin had a side effect of curing my acne. I use to get only 1 or 2 pimples, but they were the deep cystic kind that
no topicals could cure and I tired many drugs and none worked.

However, I’m noticing I’m no longer getting the flush. Maybe 1 time a day instead of 3. One time a day hasn’t been
enough in the past. If I forget to take 3 a day my acne comes back in a few days. I’m afraid if I don’t keep on getting the
flush effect my acne will come back. I’ve tried non flush and it doesn’t work for my acne. Best guess I have for why it
works is the flush expands your veins and arteries improving blood flow and that allows my body to take care of my
face on its own.

So how can I keep getting the flush? Does it synergize with anything else? I’m afraid to take more than 1500 mg
because I’ve read 2000 mg daily can cause liver damage. Any ideas? Any other way to simulate a flush effect?

Thank you for this article. I’ve experienced sunburn symptoms for the last week. Then afterincreasing Niacin from

Male, 6’4″, 240 lbs, I took 1500 mg today for my first time after watching that same video so many here have that said
3000 mg was a good start, and I will take that next time. My first experience, the flush took about 70 minutes to hit me,

I’m a younger, smaller guy (5’9″, 160 lbs) and I recently started taking 500mg Niacin (the nicotinic acid version) on an
empty stomach because I’m a fitness buff and it’s purported to increase growth hormone release for recovery. The
flush starts within minutes and lasts for about 10 minutes, and I don’t mind that…but the stomach pain is severe.
Doubles me over for several minutes in pain. I have to take it on an empty stomach for the intended effect, but I’m
wondering if it’s hurting my stomach or liver. How could I tell? Would graduating from lower doses help ease the pain?
The dosage used in the GH study was 1000mg, so I’m only taking half…

By the way, anyone taking this as an anti-depressant is taking the wrong version. The version you’d want is inositol
hexanicotinate, the no-flush version. Although I guess technically you could try increasing growth hormone production

Would Niacin help treat generalized anxiety? What does would you recommend to start? Feeling hot, burning

The Niacin flush is the releasing of radiation from the body. One can test this by exposing one part of the body to the
sun, then watch as the flush will focus on that area. Some call the Niacin flush a reverse sunburn, which is an accurate
statement, but we accumulate radiation from many sources over time and the Niacin flush will release accumulated
radiation from many sources starting with the most recent first.

Don't be Afraid of the Niacin Flush

I can´t find the answer I´m looking for, to my question which is: what is the benefit of the flushing its self? Over time
one builds up tolerance to niacin, and the flushing doesn´t appear, is niacin equally beneficial without the flush? Or is it
the flushing that is the only sign of the opening of blood vessels, which is one of the main purposes of the flush? Do
you understand where I´m going with this?

I’m surprised that the Niacin flush is generally considered a negative thing. I started taking Niacin because I was getting
severe muscle pain, memory problems, and difficulty focusing, from every anti-cholesterol medicine my doctor tried.
However, once I tried taking Niacin, I frankly keep taking it because I LOVE how it makes me feel. I enjoy the
invigorating feeling of the “flushing” side-effect, and I gradually increased my dose over time as the flushing effect
decreased. I now take 4,000 mg daily (which I’ve promised my doctor will be my maximum dose). The niacin flush feels
wonderful, and on product websites where others have discussed their experiences with various niacin supplements,
my experience is NOT uncommon. Many people, like me, find the effect invigorating, and even marginally euphoric, as I
do.

David Lloyd

(added to previous comment)

I was surprised as I read the article that such low doses are recommended to start. I did start “low” at 500 mg per day,
and increasing the dose 500 mg per week until I was at my original target of 2,000 mg per day, which was the level that
an article I read in the Journal of the American Medical Association mentioned was optimal for control of cholesterol. As
I stated in my earlier comment, I never found the flush unpleasant, and in fact, when it did start decreasing, I kept
increasing my dose so the flushing would not go away. At 4,000 mg per day, which I’ve been taking for several years, I
usually don’t notice any flushing, but I have found I can increase the likelihood of experiencing it if I eat something sour
like lemon, with something hot, like jalapeno or cayenne peppers. I also use a lot of ground flax seed. I try to get 4 tbs

mg. So like many on here, I experienced a very harsh flush. At first, it was pretty bad and I had no idea what was going

(EDITED) I ran across Niacin as a way to help with the side effects of getting off of depression meds, like Lexapro.
Fortunately, I did a bit of research, before taking it, and read about the ” flush”. Thank God, because I bought GNC
brand 250 mgs, cut it into 1/4 pieces and even that gave me a wicked flush. I can’t imagine what it would have felt like
had I taken the entire pill! I’ve been taking 1/4 pill (62.5 mgs) twice a day now and have been doing much better in
regard to withdrawal and it has helped give me a more restful sleep. My anxiety levels have also substantially
decreased! Niacin, so far, has been a godsend. Now, I’m finding out that it has so many other benefits, as well.
(Healthy hair and skin, weight, digestion, sugar levels, acne, cholesterol…etc.) I definitely plan to continue taking it. My
only concern is how much is a safe level to work up to, as I’ve read about liver damage. Does anyone know how much
is too much? Some on this site are taking thousands of mgs per day. Not sure if the amount varies by height and
weight either. If anyone can give me some advice, I’d truly appreciate it!

I started taking a product called B-Minus by SeekingHealth and it has 50mg of niacin in it. I took it for one week, same
as always on an empty stomach in the morning before work. On the 7th day, I took it a little later once I got to work, and
within 20 minutes got the flush. It was a horrible feeling! I never had experience it before. I was red from my shoulders
to my finger tips, I was on fire, my scalp was very itchy, my neck and face were blotchy. I am someone who is cold 24/7
and this was a very unwelcome burning sensation. It lasted about 2 hours before completely resolved. It seems like
that’s such a low dose to get the flush. Is niacin something that builds up in the system and that’s why I got the flush or
was it because I took it on an empty stomach? I am fearful to take it again, even with food because I never want to feel
that uncomfortable. Is it possible to have an allergy to it? I am hetero MTHFR, homo VDR/MTRR and the other

Hello Jesse!

15 mg of folic acid along with a B complex (I do not know the amounts in your complex, also most
complexes have non-flushing niacin (niacinamide) in their formula) and vitamin C should not cause a
“burning” skin reaction. Aside from niacin, which can have a flushing effect for minutes to an hour, the
supplements you mentioned are extremely benign, safe and very mild. I would need to more info
regarding the supplements, amounts and exactly what is in them including fillers, and how often you
took them, etc.. in order to better answer your question because it sounds very unusual.

Hope you feel better soon!

Don't be Afraid of the Niacin Flush

Sarah Morrow
APR 24, 2017 @ 21:56:29

I’ve never known anyone who was harmed by a niacin flush. All that’s happening is that your blood vessels are dilating.
And some toxins that may have been lying around in your cells are being flushed out. It’s a good thing. You may be
itchy and uncomfortable for a few minutes (to a half hour), but you’ll be fine.

Doctors who prescribe niacin, and stores that sell it, really should warn people: If you take enough to cause a flush,
you’ll turn beet red. Your skin will itch. It’ll be uncomfortable. You’ll feel hot when flushing, then feel cold afterward.

It’s not that any of these things are bad. They really aren’t. They’re not allergic reactions. When you have a niacin
flush, you’re not having a heart attack or stroke. The “flush” is just the vitamin doing what it’s supposed to do.

As a side note, some of us have learned to actually like “flushing.” When I take enough niacin to cause a flush, it does
feel uncomfortable for a few minutes, and my skin feels itchy, but then it feels good to know that toxins are being
flushed into my bloodstream. When my skin starts turning red, I usually take some charcoal in water, which absorbs
toxins and can carries them out of the body.

Online Holistic Health

JUN 21, 2017 @ 07:48:46

Hi Gerry! Let me start by saying that liver damage is way more of a concern with non-flushing niacin,
and even then with extremely high dosages over an extended period of time. The dosage you are
stating is very low. It’s important to remember the niacin flush is a harmless side effect that can last from
minutes to an hour. Because it can be uncomfortable and a bit unnerving if you are not used to it can
cause anxiety resulting in an elevated heart rate. If you have any concern about the effect, then simply
lower your dose until you feel ready to increase it again. There is no rush to health. And it is always a
good idea o drink LOTS of clean filtered water, especially during the flush.

Hope that helps!

I think the term “flush” does not satidfactorily describe the sensation. I was prescribed Niaspan in 2012 and my doctor

I suffer with Rosacea. In particular, my nose flushes almost scarlet straight after eating food.

I didn’t realise about the side affects and took a dose of 500 mg of Niacin today (clearly too high for a first-timer!) and
received the shock of my life with ‘the flush’ throughout the whole of my body and of course; including my nose.

Some time ago a herbalist said that the capillaries on my nose where out of sync with the rest of the blood vessels and
with that thought process; if one is able to build up a resistance to Niacin supplementation by starting with a small
dosage that creates a milder flush throughout the whole body, then increase it steadily – whether that would then help
to rehabilitate and reset the whole system to a state of normalcy?

Thanks so much for your website Dr Kmiec. It was a godsend about 6 hours ago!

information for why I got a pounding heart. Any ideas? Tonight I will go back down to 100mg for a week.

I first read !!!

“Niacin: The Real Story: Learn about the Wonderful Healing Properties of Niacin ”
Dr Abram Hoffer (Author), Andrew W Saul PH.D. (Author), Harold D Foster PhD

Ive been taking 1,000mg in 3 doses morning mid day and night the last several years.

It’s helped by cholesterol in a HUGE way.

Here’s what I learned

1) at first I was shocked by the flush. Not detered I investigated.
a) take it with meals
b) delay drinking coffee
but I evolved, leading to
c) I take B-50 pills for each dose of NIACIN; the B-50 reduces the flush to nothing
I get no flush now

2) Liver Enzymes (AST, ALT)

Were as high as 50-60
a) I lost 40 pounds
the AST/ALT dropped in spite of the Niacin
b) taking choline supplements
Niacin depletes choline; choline deficiency will raise AST/ALT
For my dosage of Niancin, Im taking 2000mg of sunflower based lecithin, which has lots of choline. I also eat one egg
yolk (range free) per day and I eat liver once in a while.

Hoffer’s book mentions liver enzyme tests and the results of using high dose niacin. Also mentions use of lecithin to
reduce AST/ALT levels. Slightly elevated AST/ALT levels dont mean liver damage in case of niacin, it means liver is
working and you need some more choline.

My cholesterol and AST/ALT are fantastic, never been better..ever!

Don't be Afraid of the Niacin Flush

Please realize there is such thing as an actual allergic reaction to some people. I am one. I was under the impression
that it was a natural flush as well! It led into hours… Then throat swelled to the point of rushing into the Dr. He gave me
a shot and that barely helped. It allowed me to breathe. The Dr was amazed but this can be thing. It took 2-3 weeks for
swelling to go away. I felt so sick. Then felt better. I just want people to know that there is a slight chance of this.
Please be safe.

Hello Peron! Thanks for your comment and I am glad that you are okay! You are correct that some
people do experience allergic reactions to just about anything…food, herbs, pharmaceuticals and even
niacin. Though when talking about vitamins, it is far more rare to have such a reaction. But you certainly
bring up an important point. No flush should last more than 30 minutes to an hour max. The discomfort
should be no more than redness, burning (feeling hot), and itching. You should never have swelling of
the throat and if this happens, please seek medical attention as you did. I have to admit though, this is
the first time I heard of this reaction as niacin is a very safe vitamin…so again, thanks for your comment
and the words of warning.

Wishing the best of health!

Are there any vitamins out there that don’t cause some sort of problem??? I’ve been suddenly getting red flushes from
my head to my stomach, sometimes for days straight. Was starting to think allergic reaction or some serious disease I
read about that causes flushing. I had hot flashes during my menopause years but nothing like this. Decided to look at
all my vitamins I’m taking and they all have niacin
I’m taking over 150 mg a day I’m not taking any more vitamins

Hi Michelle, you bring up a great point and I totally understand your frustration. Let me try to offer a
couple of thoughts that may or may not apply (hard to respond without knowing your entire history –
state of health, diet, meds, if any, etc)

Because most vitamins are synthetic and also because supplements are not regulated, means that you

never know if you are taking what you think are taking. Further, most people have reactions to the
binders that hold the supplements together. This is why I always recommend organic supplements first
and ideally in liquid form (followed by gel, capsule and lastly tablet).

Second, always look for brand names that take the extra step of acquiring a third party assay. This
ensures what you are taking is exactly what you are ingesting and at the correct ammounts. Here is an
article to help explain this better.

Lastly, sometimes people experience what is known as a healing reaction and this is merely your body
“detoxing” and can last for days to weeks. I am not saying this is what is happening to you but just
offering it as another possible reason for what you are experiencing.

Honestly, I believe it is likely the quality of the vitamins you are taking. If you like, feel free to email me
HERE.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of health!

Don’t be afraid of niacin? I have my first dose of 400 mg niacin this morning, with water, no food. ..resulting in extreme
flushing within 15 minutes, was sick & passed out twice.. lucky i wasn’t driving to work. Felt ‘normal’ after an hour &
half. This product should have health warnings on dosage requirements & side effects.

Hi Carrolyn!

Oh, I totally agree that there should be a warning label explaining what the possible flush symptoms
could be! Along with the reassurance that it is an annoying yet harmless side effect so people don’t think
something really seriously wrong with them.

That said, 400 mg was way too much to take especially if it was your first time and had never
experienced what a flush feels like – it should really be very mild. At the dosage that you took, however,
I am sure you were feeling the flush systems everywhere – a full body flush and that would not be
comfortable! I am sure that a lower dosage your experience would be very different!

I always recommend starting at a dosage as low as 50mg and work up to a higher dosage (as
mentioned in the article). Doing that this way, you would not experience any alarming effects. Further. a
mild flush should only last about 30 minutes. Drinking plenty of water during the flush helps and is also
recommended.

Do people get over the flushing eventually. And is it better to cut does and take it two times a day?
