BUSWAY FIELD CHECK PIECES/

REPlACEMENT PIECES
A Field Check Piece is a length of busway inserted into a
run after the major portion of that run has been installed.
This permits the release of straight lengths and portions of
the run with known dimensions long before final dimen-
sions are set. Valuable time is saved by installing busway
early in a construction project and using Field Check Pieces
to complete the job. The ± 1h-inch joint will provide even
further flexibility.
To determine the length of piece(s) to be inserted,
measure the opening length "L'' as shown from the end of
each housing and subtract 81/4 inches. This equals the bus-
way length "X" from center line of joint to joint and is the JOINT~ TO JO(NT ~X= L • 8 %"

.,:
. way to measure all Spectra Series busway pieces.

NOMINAL POSITION
JOINTS WITH ± 112-INCH ADJUSTABIUTY
Every Spectra Series busway is supplied with the ± 1/z-
inch adjustable joint as standard. The modular joint pack is
preassembled to one end of each piece of busway and
shipped in the "nominal" position. The joint caps have four
housing mounting holes (eight on 5000 amp Copper) that Fig. 27.3 Joint Cap
contain twistouts permitting expansion or contraction of
the joint up to 1/z inch in either direction.
27
HANGERS

VERTICAl MOUNTING
Spring hangers are furnished to support the busway at
each floor. When the floor-to~floor span is over 16 feet
support for the spring hanger should be provided. The
quantity of springs supplied is based on busway weight.
Simple adjustment procedures are included with insta lla-
tion instructions. Mounting holes align with floor flanges.

What is Betaflam ?
c;
Through years of research and development, Studer Cables Switzerland has developed its own insulation
compounds to produce BETAflam - flexible, mineral insulated, fire resistant cables.
q

This special compound, which is incorporated with extremely high content of mineral, is subjected to a
(j
powerful electron beam cross linking process at our irradiation centres.

.-; With electron acceleration process, BETAflam flexible mineral insulated cable is able to withstand operating
temperature of up to 145 degree C. The strength characteristics are enhanced to achieve similar performance
<i as MICC cables. Moreover; it is flexible, lighter in weight and avoids termination problems which are related
to the design and installation of conventional MICC cables.

What does electron 6eam crosslinking mean?

Insulation material of cables using standard XLPE are cross linked by chemical process to prevent it from
melting off the conductors. However, should there be an increase in temperature above 90 degree C, ageing
characteristics become dramatically worse and the cable loses its mechanical properties.

1 At the Studer irradiation centres, with the state-of-the-art technology in irradiation and using powerful
--.:5' electron beam accelerators to generate high energy electrons (Beta rays), we conduct electron beam
cross-linking on mineral insulated compounds developed by Studer to produce BETAflam flexible Ml
cables.

With this advanced technology in irradiation cross linking, no peroxides or hydrosilicons

into the synthetic mixtures as in the case with chemical cross linked polyethylene.
BETAflam flexible Ml cables achieve best performance by:

High mineral content with superior ageing performance and excellent

mechanical characteristics are not attainable from chemical
cross/inking process applicable for PVC I XLPE FR cables.

Conformity to Approval Standards

BETAflam flexible mineral insulated cables are manufactured in
conformity t~ the following approved standards:

Fire and Mechanical Tests

BS 6387 Category C. W.Z.
Specification for performance requirements for cables required to
maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions. Applicable to cables
rated at voltages not exceeding 450!750V.
It tests electric cables for resistance to fire at 950 degree C for 3
hours, fire at 650 degree C for 15 minutes, then at 650 degree with
water spray for a further 15 minutes and fire at 950 degree C for 15
minutes with mechanical shock.

Flame Propagation Tests

IEC 332-3 Category A.B.C .
.~ DIN VDE 0472 Part 804/C
) Tests on bun?hed wires and cables under fire condition. This technical
report descnbes a method of type approval testing to define the
ability of bunched cables to restrain flame progagation in defined
conditions regardless of their application, i.e. power,
telecommunications (including data transmission and optical fibre
cables), etc.
3 test categories to test different amount of combustible material
contained in a bundle of cable.
Category A - High Density Cabling
7 litres of combustible material per metre exposed to flame for 40
minutes.

Category B - Medium Density Cablipg

3.5 litres of combustible material per metre exposed to flame for 40
minutes.
Category C - Low Density Cabling -
1.5 litres of combustible material per metre exposed to flame for 20
minutes.
) The cable specimens are placed vertically next to each other on a
vertical tray and are then exposed to the flame of a· ribbon burner
for a specified duration. After the removal of the flame, the cable
specimens must be wiped clean and the charred or affected portion
should not have rea~hed a height exceeding 2.5 metres.

Smoke Emission Tests

IEC 1034
DIN VDE 0472 Part 816
Measurement of smoke density of electric cables burning under
defined conditions. ·
Electric cables (1 metre length) to be tested are placed in a 3-metre
cube enclosure where a light beam is emitted through a transparent
window an.d projected across the enclosure to a photocell connected .
to a recorder at the opposite window. The recorder is adjusted to .
register from 0% for complete obscuration to 100% luminous
transmission. The cables are then subjected to fire where the
minimum light transmission is recorded. Acceptance criterion is a
minimum light transmission value greater than 60%. BETAflam
flexible Ml cables achieve light transmis_sion values above 80% .

.
A L T y ASSURANCE-

Circuit-Integrity Tests
IEC 331
DIN VDE 0472 Part 814
Fire-resisting characteristics of electric cables.
Cables required to maintain circuit integrity must function even under
the influence of a continuous fire. Acable 1200 mm length is placed
over a gas burner and connected to a electrical supply at its rated
· voltage.
Fire is applied for a duration of 3 hours and temperature on the
cable at 750 degree C. After 3 hours the fire and electrical supply
is switched off.
Twelve hours later, the supply is switched on again. During the fire
and when the mains are switched on again, the cable must continue
to be operational.

· Halogen Content Tests

. IEC 754-2
DIN VDE 0472 Part 813
Test on gases evolved during combustion of electric cables.
Determination of degree of acidity of gases evolved during the
combu~tion of materials taken from electric cables by measuring
pH and conductivity.

Fire Performance of electric cable systems

DIN VDE 4102 Part 12
It defines the performance of a complete wiring system, i.e. the
cable with its supports, fixings, joints and termination boxes. The
system is exposed to very high temperatures and mechanical
stresses caused by distortion of the supports.
The complete system is installed in an oven of a minimum of 3m
length, 2m width and 2.5 height. 2 cables of the smallest cross
section to be certified and 2 cables of a cross section of 50mm2 are
tested. The temperature in the oven increases in accordance to the
standard characteristic, a duration of over 30 minutes at 950 degree
C to be certified as "E30". Another test at duration of over 90 minutes
at 1,035 degree C and certified as NE90".
