We expected this to be a small sale, but with exactly 1666 lots (an auspicious number for us) of varied offerings, it seems our expectations were a little short of reality. We may not have many of the usual ‘heavyweights’ but I think there is plenty to interest most tastes. ‘The auction starts with the Sune Persson collection, accumulated over several decades and to employ that much used expression ‘a collectors collection’. It is a fairly comprehensive A to Z of the world, but what really sets it apart is the condition of the notes, with almost everything in superb grade. Additionally, there are the usual archival offerings, including several photographs of notes that do not exist - a fascinating insight into what could have been! Other notes come from a multitude of sources, both trade and private, making for a hugely varied and interesting general world section. Of special note, at the end of the sale, is the comprehensive Steve Wright Collection from the Isle of Man. This is almost certainly the largest group ever offered in one go from this small island. T hope our clients will find this auction competitively priced and interesting and although thoughts may be turning to summer and sun, please take the time to view, you may be pleasantly surprised. As ever, October promises to be a fine sale so if we don’t sce you this July I hope to sce you in the Autumn. Best wishes and good luck from all of us in the Banknote Department ) July 15 & 16,2014 - LONDON SPINK SUNE PERSSON 1938-2014 ‘The eminent expert on the Middle East, and an avid collector of the banknotes of that part of the world, associate professor Sune Persson, aged 75, died of cancer 27 January 2014. In Géteborgs Numismatiska Férening (The Numismatic Society of Gothenburg) he was a scholarly and enthusiastic member of the Banknote Study Circle, led by him and Paul Levin. In 1990 GNF published his leaflet Palestinas och Israels sedelhistoria 1914-1989. At the International Numismatic Congress in Brussels in 1997 he lectured about the subject with his usual insightful knowledge. ‘The preceding speaker had held his lecture in Flemish and Sune, jokingly, began his in Swedish. ‘The chairman intervened, but Sune referred to the precedent of the Dutchman, although he then yielded to the protests and lectured in English. From the beginning in 1991 Sune Persson had been a member of the board in Gunnar Holsts stftelse (the Gunnar Holst Foundation). His deep knowledge in various fields has been of great value for the Foundation. Fourteen of the twentyfour numismatists awarded by the Foundation have been foreigners. Sune’s experiences as a teacher made him a good lecturer. He lectured in GNF about banknotes, starting with the banknotes issued by Palmstruchska banken (1654-1664) and ending with the banknote: by the countrics in the European Union, His lectures always were greatly appreciated, not only informative but also captivating. On Myntets dag he lectured about the Nazi banknote forgeries in a brilliant way ‘He left behind a very large collection of modern banknotes in superb condition - more than 5000 banknotes from 242 countries. The collection mainly consists of relatively modern notes in fantastic condition, but also includes a few great rari Spink are honoured to have been chosen to sell this wonderful collection, which forms the first session of our auction on 15 July.
