I love the enthusiasm of Hong Kong and the meeting of old friends to discuss ‘the Spink sale’ and what we have managed to find this time. I know the New Year auction is always keenly anticipated so I hope we don’t disappoint this time. I have participated in many sales over the last thirty years and I have watched the market fluctuate during the good and the thin times. The market now is unrecognisable from our first “Spink-Taisei’ auctions Catalogue production is infinitely more advanced and the marketplace has expanded dramatically, both in terms of knowledge and in value. This year we have so many notes we decided to split them into two catalogues. We are offering a fascinating range of Chinese currency in the first catalogue and then Hong Kong and Macan in the second. Together, these total almost 1400 lots covering a wide range of types, quality and prices. Some Chinese highlights include some truly spectacular archive material from China, a group of Asiatic Banking Corporation notes from the 19th century, the ever popular Pei Yang Tientsin and Pei ‘Yang Kin-Fu banks, Chekiang and Kiangsu banks, some very rare Russo-Asiatic and Russo-Chinese banknotes and a lovely group of Banque Industrielle de Chine issues from Peking, Canton, Shanghai, Swatow and Tientsin. These wonderful currency notes with their flamboyant and colourful designs look like proper money! There are also large and impressive selections of Imperial, Provincial and People’s Bank issues The Hong Kong catalogue features an extremely rare Asiatic Banking Corporation for Hong Kong group, a varied Government of Hong Kong selection, some superb Chartered Bank notes including an issued $5 fiom 1879 and another fiom 1906 and a hitherto unknown $50 of 1919. A large group of Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank issues including the ‘Queen Victoria’ $100, a fine run of $10, an issued ‘Apollo’ $50 and numerous other rarities. The Mercantile Bank notes are highlighted by a $100 of 1964 with serial number A 000002. There is also a group of Macau, including a 100 patacas of 1919.
