MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

Dr. A. Sengupta

EDITORIAL BOARD
CHIEF EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA
EDITOR MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL
ASSOCIATE EDITOR MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)
Joseph Priestley was an English scientist, philosopher, theologian and clergyman who
authored more than 150 publications. He is noted for his groundbreaking contributions to
experimental chemistry, electricity and the chemistry of gases, as well as his
extraordinary work regarding liberal political and religious thought.

Early Life and Education:

Born at Birstall Fieldhead, England, Joseph Priestley proved to be a very intelligent child
from an early age. He learned mathematics, logic, metaphysics and natural philosophy.
Priestley also learnt more than six different languages including Latin, Hebrew and
Greek.

Contributions and Achievements:

Joseph Priestley is highly regarded for his work with the chemistry of gases. As a friend
of Benjamin Franklin, Priestley contacted him regarding his theories of electricity. He
later experimented with distinguishing various types of “air”.

Before him, scientists thought that the air on Earth consisted of carbon dioxide and
hydrogen. Priestley brought 10 more gases to this list, such as nitrogen, hydrogen
chloride, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and oxygen. He also invented soda water.

Priestley wrote several theological, philosophical and political essays. He made the
English press and government furious with his theories regarding “rational Christianity”
and “Laissez-Faire Economics”. Priestley, along with his family, narrowly escaped
hundreds of raging protesters who attacked their home in 1791.

Later Life and Death:

Joseph Priestley fled to the United States in 1794. He died in Northumberland,
Pennsylvania on Feb 6, 1804. He was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Northumberland,
Pennsylvania.

NEWS UPDATE
 Using imaging to identify women at risk of giving birth
prematurely:(26th January, 2018)

Ultrasound is traditionally used on pregnant women to study the anatomy,

movement and blood flow of the developing fetus, but nurse researchers are now
using the imaging technique to identify women who are at risk of giving birth
prematurely.

 Pyridostigmine treatment reverses pediatric complications of

botulinum toxin therapy:(26th January, 2018)

Physicians report that complications from botox therapy for nerve disorders can be
reversed with pyridostigmine, a common treatment for myasthenia gravis.

 Aerobic exercise may mildly delay, slightly improve Alzheimer's

symptoms:(26th January, 2018)

Geriatrics experts have suggested that exercising can improve brain health in older
adults. However, not all studies of exercise and older adults have proven the
benefits of exercise. A team of researchers designed a study to learn whether
exercise could delay or improve AD symptoms. They reviewed 19 studies that
examined the effect of an exercise training program on cognitive function in older
adults who were at risk for or diagnosed with AD.

 Site of 1st chlamydia exposure makes big difference:(26th January,

2018)

Exposing the gut to chlamydia protects against subsequent infection in the genital
tract and other tissues, researchers have discovered. Chlamydia is the nation's
most common sexually transmitted disease and causes infertility, ectopic
pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease if left untreated.

 Graphene oxide is ‘sensed’ by specialized cells of the immune

system:(26th January, 2018)

4
26-01-2018

A new study shows that our immune system handles graphene oxide in a manner
similar to pathogens, paving the way for safer biomedical applications of this two-
dimensional material.

 The sugar-attaching enzyme that defines colon cancer:(26th

January, 2018)

Researchers have identified an enzyme that is absent in healthy colon tissue but
abundant in colon cancer cells, according to a new report. The enzyme appears to
drive the conversion of normal colon tissue into cancer by attaching sugar molecules,
or glycans, to certain proteins in the cell.

 Could the biological clock be a key ally in the fight against

inflammatory disease?: (26th January, 2018)

What if the symptoms and seriousness of certain inflammatory diseases were

linked to time of day? Researchers have been working on this hypothesis, after
noting that the seriousness and mortality associated with fulminant hepatitis were
dependent on the time at which the disease was induced. Their study, conducted
on human cells and mice, shows that the anti-inflammatory action of a biological
clock protein could prevent the onset of fulminant hepatitis, by alleviating
symptoms and increasing survival rates.

 Potential enzyme as therapeutic target for diabetes:(26th January,

2018)

Researchers report a new mechanism for regulating glucose uptake by the liver which
has implications for type 2 diabetes and its treatment.

 Polio labs equipped to study rare tropical diseases:(26th January,

2018)
Researchers have investigated the possibility of utilizing the Polio network of 145 labs set
up around the world to help tackle neglected tropical diseases which impact on the lives
