PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER THREE: Final Report

Teacher Mentor: Victoria Karmali

Intern Teacher: Nicole Riedmueller

Teacher Mentor Comments:

Nicole taught Art 10 and Art 20/30 during her PSIII semester at Chinook High School. Art 10 was taught in the morning and
Art 20 and Art 30 were combined in one class in the afternoon.

Nicole’s calm and caring nature was immediately evident in the classroom and school community. In addition to teaching,
Nicole ran the Chinook Art Club weekly, supported several events at the school, including the Remembrance Day ceremony,
and helped to develop a Kindness Café in collaboration with the Chinook Wellness Team. Nicole also worked with the skills
development students on a clay ornament project and taught the Knowledge and Employability students an introductory
lesson on printmaking.

Nicole developed effective unit and lesson plans that integrate a variety of instructional strategies. The art curriculum is very
diverse and requires skills and knowledge of several mediums and techniques. Nicole’s background as a ceramic artist was
very valuable to her teaching. She developed ceramic studio practices in the classroom and supported students and myself to
further our ceramic techniques and processes. Nicole also embraced the opportunity to research, learn, practice and teach
mediums and techniques that she has less experience with. She successfully taught Oil Painting to the Art 20s, integrating
contemporary and historic artists, technique development and personal expression.

Nicole’s relationships with students and colleagues authentic and professional. Nicole has truly created a classroom
environment where all students are supported and welcomed. She spends time with each student and values one on one
discussion as an opportunity to provide students with formative feedback and support development of artistic practice.
Nicole’s teaching abilities continue to grow through further development and implementation of questions during instruction.

Nicole has also integrated technology, including creating websites for her classes to access additional resources and content.
Nicole embraced the growth culture of Chinook and spent time reflecting on her practice. She is very receptive to feedback,
implementing new techniques, adapting lessons and assessment strategies to support student learning and growth.

Nicole has worked hard to develop a classroom management plan over the course of PSIII. The art classroom has many
added challenges in regards to classroom management. Nicole responded well to feedback and suggestions, always adapting
and trying new strategies to address student behaviour in the classroom. Nicole also regularly communicates with parents,
colleagues, administrators and counsellors to support students.

I believe that Nicole will be a successful educator and I wish her all the best as she begins her career as a teacher.
