Report Summary
The key product sectors of the 'industrial consumable products' distribution market as defined in this report are power &
hand tools, health & safety, engineering & metalworking, fluid & air control, workshop & maintenance, storage, security,
access, site equipment & handling equipment, with fasteners, janitorial and abrasives products. This is a mature and highly
fragmented market which has experienced relatively stable conditions, with the exception of 2008/09. The market recovered
from the economic downturn in 2010 and experienced growth to 2014, although was relatively flat in 2015/16.
The market has benefited from an increased focus on health & safety, energy efficiency and environmental issues, which
have largely been legislation-driven. Growth areas include PPE that is legislation driven and spill control that benefits from
site safety and increasing awareness of environmental impact. Also, development of value added services, such as VMI
(vendor managed inventory), which continues to represent a growth area. Indeed, customers are demanding value added
service as cost is not their only consideration and they are increasingly expecting more service provision with their goods.
This is a highly fragmented market with some distributors operating in all product sectors defined in this report and others
focusing on a more limited number of product sectors, resulting in variable performance between distributors. One-stop
sourcing remains important for customers, which is particularly applicable to commodity type products. This trend is assisted
by e-commerce as company websites can display more products than shown in catalogues. Product ranges are generally
offered both in catalogues and on the Internet, with most leading companies also operating a branch network. Many of the
larger companies are continuing to increase their branch numbers and UK coverage.
The impact of Brexit on the industrial sector and thereby the industrial distributors market is extremely difficult to forecast
and its implications are likely to become clearer as the UK begins the process of negotiating trade agreements in order to
leave the EU. With a recent study indicating that many manufacturers are likely to hold back their investment in plant and
machinery, maintenance and repair will continue to be important, providing opportunities that will help to underpin the
market, which is forecast to experience modest growth to 2021.
