BREAKTHROUGH: FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

For the first time in history, a team of scientists at the University of Sydney in Australia has
successfully converted the information contained in a photon burst in the form of sound on
a computer chip.

This achievement is being heralded as the equivalent of translating lightning into thunder.
This latest breakthrough has been celebrated as absolutely essential to the next wave of
computer design. For a number of years, computer manufacturers such as IBM and Intel
have been dabbling with the idea of light-based computers which will be capable of
receiving and transferring data at the speed of light.

These new computers will work approximately twenty times faster than current models and
because they will process photons rather than electrons, they will also be more energy
efficient than the computers of today, as well as being less prone to overheating and more
resistant to electromagnetic interference.

But despite the fact that two of the world’s leading computer designers have been pursuing
this new line of computing technology, it has proven to be an exceptionally difficult project
to manage. While it is easy to transfer photons by fiber optic cables, light moves so quickly
that it is impossible for conventional computer chips to actually process properly. For this
reason, information transferred between computers is converted into electrons which move

much more slowly than photons. As a happy medium, it has been suggested that photons
could be translated into soundwaves. According to Birgit Stiller, the supervisor of the
successful project, translating light waves into soundwaves slows the velocity of the
particles down by an order of five magnitudes and is therefore possible for a computer chip
to process.

The scientists have explained that the photonic information enters the computer chip as a
pulse of light. As soon as this light pulse touches the computer chip, an acoustic wave is
generated which stores all the information. Then another pulse of light is generated which
can access the sound data and retranslate it into photons. The photonic information
passes through the computer chip at a speed of between two and three nanoseconds, but
the information stays on the chip for around ten nanoseconds which give the processing
system enough time to retrieve the information.

Moritz Merklein, who worked on the project, says that there is still a lot of work to be done
before light-based computers can become a commercial reality. He explains that the
photonic data on the computer chip needs to be slowed down further so that it can be
processed, routed, stored and accessed properly. However, this is still being hailed as a
huge breakthrough in the field of optical information processing, and it is hoped that it
forms the foundation of the next generation of communication systems.
