1. Why lubricants are used? Give three examples where lubricants are used.

Ans: Lubricants are used to reduce friction, reduce wear, and also acts also
cooling , cleaning and sealing agent.

2. What is the difference between viscosity and friction?

Ans: viscosity is the resistance to flow a liquid. But friction is between two matting
surface

3. If a centrifugal pump is running 1450 rpm and requires to lift 300 gpm water
at 20 ft height what will be it’s actual power? Here pump efficiency is 60%.
Ans: 2.53 HP

4. What do you mean by DCS & PLC System ?

Ans:

5. What are reasons behind the motor burn?

Ans: due to overload

6. What is flow rate? What do you mean by cumecs ?

Ans:flow of liquid at per unit time

7. What are the difference between blower and compressor?

Ans: blower moves air by increasing pressure to reduce friction but not compressed
. by compressor we can compressed the compressible fluid at our desired pressure.

8. Write down the main difference between laminar flow and turbulent flow for
closed pipe flow?
Ans: in pipe Rn<2800 for lamilnar flow but at turbulence Rn>4200

9. What is the difference between ISO grade and SAE grade of lubricants?

10. Which one is more viscous (i) normal water or (ii) sea water?
Ans: Normal water is more viscous

11. To increase the head, how to connect two centrifugal pumps.

Ans: series

12. What is water hardness & how it can be removed ?

Ans: water hardness means the dissolve Mg, Ca Carbonate

13. What is a Boiler ? Mention the different units of boiler pressure.

Ans:It is device used to produce steam. Bar, Kg/cm2, psi

14. Write the position of Y-strainer in centrifugal pump connection.

Ans: At after pump

15. A lube oil density is 0.86 kg/m³. When 6% water is added with lube oil what
will be new density?
Ans: water will not mix with lub oil because specific gravity is different.

16. What are the difference between steam turbine and gas turbine?
Ans: Steam turbine use
1. boiler
2. working fluid is steam
3 Efficiency is lower that gas turbine
4. its used as a base load plant
5. High capacity plant
gas turbine
1. don’t use boiler
2.working fluid is hot gas
3. Efficiency is grater than steam turbine
4. Its is used as peak load plant
5. Low capacity plant
17. What is the relation between KVA & KW?
Ans: KVA=KW*.8

18. What is the difference between heat exchanger and water-cooled condenser?
Ans: at Heat exchanger
1. extracted heat is used for other fluid
2. working fluid phase don’t change.
3. less costly
Condenser
1.heat is removed at air
2.working fluid phase is changed
3.more costly

19. The initial cost of a filling machine is Tk 10000.00 and expected service life is
5 years. If the salvage value is Tk. 500, using straight-line method, what will
be the depreciation value per annum?
Ans:1900

20. Distinguish between fuel and lubricants.

Ans: Fuel
1. less viscous
2.less Specific gravity
3.Heating value high
4.atomization vaporization with air is easy
5.fuel can be used as lubricant
Lubricants
1. high Viscous
2. high specific gravity
3. atomization vaporization with air is not easy
4.but lubricant cant be use as fuel

21. What is called chiller? What is the difference between vapor compression and
vapor absorption chiller?
Ans:Chiller means temperature reducing device.
At vapor compression chiller pressure is higher at atmospheric pressure
But at vapor absorption chiller pressure is vacuum .

22. What is the difference between Generator & Motor ?

Ans:
Generator convert mechanical energy to electrical energy but motor convert
electrical energy to mechanical Energy.

23. What is the basic difference between petrol engine and diesel engine?
Ans: Petrol Engine
1. Compression ratio is 9-11
2.fuel is petrol
3.spark ignition
4.auto ignition is not desired because it creates knocking
diesel Engine
1. Compression ratio is 16-24
2.fuel is diesel
3.compression ignition
4.auto ignition is desired

24. Why cooling tower cools the water?

Ans: because of temperature difference . In cooling tower ID, FD fan is used to
remove hot air.

25. What is the difference between mass transfer and heat transfer?
Ans: when mass cross the boundary is known as mass transfer and heat may also
be transferred but at heat transfer only heat will be crossed the boundary no mass
