MODULE: CSE419 Engineers in Society FT (first 7 lectures and first 4 tutorials)

Continuous assessment: 30%


Examination (3 hours): 70%

1. Continuous assessment (15%)

Continuous assessment includes TWO assignments and ONE case study report.
1. Students will be in groups of SIX (one group leader per group). All submissions will be
made via TURNITIN (with class ID/passwords to be provided). There will only be one
registration per group via the group leader.
2. Students are required to attend the invited lecture and attendance will be recorded.
3. Students are encouraged to take part in the English Enhancement Project by filling in two
English Language Assessment Forms. Advancement of 1 grade (e.g. B to B+) will be
given individually to those completed the two English Language Assessment Forms.
4. Assignments and case study report each accounts for 5% marks.

2. Overall teaching outline

Topic 1: Hong Kong Legal System (1 weeks)


(a) Common law, Hong Kong Courts and legal procedures (civil and criminal)
(b) Alternative dispute resolution, arbitration, mediation

Topic 2: Contract (2.5 weeks)


(a) Formation of contract; offer, acceptance, consideration and intention
(b) Privity on contract, void/voidable contract, breach of contract and remedies
(c) Construction contracts – special features

Topic 3: Negligence (2.5 weeks)


(a) Negligence v. trespass; Negligence: duty of care, breach of duty and damages
(b) Defense and damages, vicarious liability and occupier’s liability
(c) Professional negligence
