R/H Wheel Installation – Risk Assessment

Objective:

To eliminate the risk of incorrect installation of the wheel.

Goal:

To develop a procedure to remove the possibility of incorrect installation of the wheel.

Step 1: Task analysis

Proactively measure the task situation and task environment to determine what to evaluate.

• A learner Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is not highly experienced with less than 90 days on the
job.

Step 2: Identify the hazards.

Proactive activity that looks at risks associated with identified hazards and assists in selecting actions
to maintain an appropriate level of safety.

• Lifting the aircraft properly.

• Proper lubrication of the bearings.
• Ensure the proper wheel.
• The wheel rotates freely.
• The installing of wheel may be under-torqued or over-torqued .
• The wheel bolt is secured with cotter pin for safety.
• Exceed in air pressure of the wheel as in the manual.

Step 3: Risk Assessment.

The first element in the risk management process. It encompasses risk identification and risk estimation.
Once a hazard has been identified, the risks associated with the hazard must be identified and the
amount of risk estimated.

Step 4 – Risk Control

 Lifting jacks are inspected and maintained properly.

 Torque wrenches are calibrated timely.
 The wheel nut should be properly secured.
 All equipment used in this maintenance is in proper condition preventing work hazards.
 Desired air should be used for the wheel like nitrogen.
 All the work is done indeed with latest revisions of manuals.
 Transport Canada (CARs) should be taken in care.

Step 5 – Monitoring

It is essential once a corrective plan is in place, it is effective in addressing the stated issues or
hazards.

• Quality assurance is in place from buying aircraft parts till the installation of the components
and maintenance.

• Inspectors inspecting the work done at each step to control risk.

• The work is tested for its qualified working.

• Air pressure of the wheel should be checked.

Step 6 – On-Going Monitoring

To ensure the effectiveness of the remedial measures, the corrective actions should be
monitored and evaluated on a regular basis. Follow-up activity should be conducted through the
internal audit process. This should include comprehensive documentation of audit findings,
corrective actions and follow-up procedures.

• Inspections should be conducted after each cycle.

• Special inspections should be mandatory be completed IAC with the manual.
• Computer based tracking of component hours for due inspection and change component.
