1.1 Applied Situations

Boards or components are often replaced in the following cases.
l Equipment maintenance

Replacing boards or components is a common method adopted for equipment

maintenance. Service personnel can determine the scope of hardware faults
according to alarms or other information during maintenance. They need to
implement corresponding replacement operations when faulty board or components
are out of service.

l Hardware update
The engineer needs to update the hardware, such as to replace the chips when the
board is added with new functions. In such a case, the engineer needs to insert and
extract the board, and restore the running of board.
l Equipment Expansion
Some boards need to be replaced or inserted during the equipment expansion.

1.2 Replacement Flow

1.2.1 Components Replacement Flow
Overview
In most cases, the components replacement is performed with hot line to guarantee ZXWN
MSCS providing uninterrupted telecom services. To ensure the running security of the
equipment and to bring the minimum effect to the system services, the service personnel
must strictly conform to the basic operating flows regulated in this manual.

Flow Diagram
Figure 1-1 shows the basic operating flow.

Figure 1-1 Basic Operating Flow of Replacing Components

1.2.2 Confirming Replacement Feasibility

During fault processing or equipment overhauling, service personnel must estimate the
feasibility of replacing a certain component for a start.
l Make sure whether there is available service part in the equipment warehouse. If there
is no available service part, service personnel should contact the local ZTE office as
earliest as possible.
l Make sure whether service personnel are capable of implementing replacement. Only
qualified service personnel with the following basic qualities can replace components.

à Get familiar with the function of various boards used in ZXWN MSCS.
à Understand basic operating flow of replacing boards.

à Master basic skills of replacing boards.

l Make sure whether the operation risk is controllable. Board replacement is a
risky maintenance operation. Before replacing a board, service personnel must
fully estimate the operation risk, checking whether the risk is controllable by some
protective measures without powering off the equipment. Service personnel are

Chapter 1 Component Replacement Overview

prohibited to replace the board except that the risk is under control. Otherwise,
contact the local ZTE office as soon as possible for technical support.

1.2.3 Preparing Service Parts and Tools

After confirming that the operation is feasible, maintenance personnel must prepare the
spare parts and necessary tools. The preparations are as follows:
l The operator must stock some spare parts, repair faulty boards in time, and ensure
there are enough spares for the main boards, such as GPBA0, GPBX0, SWBB0, SLB,
GPBB0 and GBPX1.

Note:

The 14U shelf uses the GPBB0 and GPBX1, and the 13U shelf uses GPBA0GPBX0.

l Maintenance personnel must prepare some common tools, such as the multi-meter,
antistatic wrist straps, cross screwdrivers, flathead screwdrivers, sharp nose pliers,
thin nose bent pliers and so on.

1.2.4 Taking Technical Protective Measures

Although there are some risks to replacing boards, in most cases, service personnel can
prevent such risks with some technical measures. For example, service personnel can
hand over the services provided by active board to standby board while replacing the active
board running in the active/standby mode. After the standby board runs normally, the old
active board is replaced with a new one. In this way, it is available to avoid the risks to the
running of services.
Therefore, service personnel must take corresponding protective measures in advance
before replacing components so as to ensure the running security of equipment and to
bring the minimum effect to services. For relevant contents, see sequent contents.

1.2.5 Replacing Components

After making sure that the corresponding technical protective measures are effective,
service personnel can comply with the corresponding regulations to replace the
components, including inserting/extracting boards, and setting DIP switches.

1.2.6 Verifying Functions of New Components

After replacing the components, service personnel should test and verify the functions
of new components with the corresponding checking or testing methods provided in
this manual. This replacing operation cannot be considered successful until the new

component works normally. Otherwise, service personnel should contact local ZTE office
for technical support in time.

1.2.7 Repairing Faulty Board

Service personnel should contact local ZTE office in time to repair the positively faulty
board so that service parts in warehouse can be supplied in due course.

1.3 Precautions
Board replacement is a major operation for equipment maintenance. To guarantee
personal safety and equipment security, service personnel should carefully read the
precautions described in this topic.

1.3.1 Electrostatic Prevention

Because large quantity of microelectronic devices and circuit boards are used in ZXWN
MSCS, it is required to adopt antistatic measures in the following aspects during the whole
process of production, usage, transportation, and storage.
l Service personnel must transport and stock boards with dedicated antistatic bags and
boxes to guarantee the antistatic safety.
l When moving and inserting a board, service personnel must wear antistatic wrist strap
that are grounded properly, and insert the grounding terminal into the ESD jack on the
rack.
l Antistatic wrist straps cannot prevent service personnel from the static electricity due
to the contact between the board and clothes. Therefore, they should avoid any
contact between the board and clothes.
l When antistatic wrist straps work normally, the resistance must range from 1 Ω to 10
Ω.
l When replacing a board, service personnel should keep all uninstalled component
in antistatic packages, and put dismounted components on antistatic foam cushions
temporarily.

1.3.2 Safety Precautions

Service personnel need to perform physical operations on the foreground for replacing a
board. They should be acutely conscious of personal safety and avoid accidents.

There are following precautions.

l Because ZXWN MSCS foreground equipment uses -48 V DC power, it is prohibited to

open the back door of cabinet, and to use such tools as vices, screwdriver, and pliers
on the back of rack with live-line while replacing boards.
l When replacing a board on high position, pay attention to the safety of air operations
and to prevent from falling.

Chapter 1 Component Replacement Overview

l After taking out the board, do not touch the board with hands directly to avoid from
being scalded or injured by the parts on the board.
l If the board replacement is due to power fault, ask power service personnel to check
it. Inserting the power board directly is prohibited.

1.3.3 Equipment Safety

Overview
Equipment safety involves the following two aspects.

l Do not cause other damage to the equipment when replacing the board. For example,
the backplane connector is bent due to rough operation.
l Try best not to influence other boards and services working normally in the system
while replacing a board.
Precautions are as follows.
l Prohibit replacing boards with rough operations, that is, forcefully installing and
disassembling screws and boards.
l Prohibit replacing the board that possibly influences services at traffic peak. It is better
to replace the board when the traffic is the minimum, such as daybreak 2:00.
l Prohibit directly replacing the active board. Change over the active board to standby
mode first, and then replace this board.

Routine Check
During board installation, if the board cannot be pushed into the right position with its
extractors, withdraw it and check the following items:
l Check whether the board installation slot is consistent with the requirement.
l Check whether the board deviates from rails.
l Check whether backplane-connector pins are bent or damaged.
