Iowa MOST
The Miles of Smiles Team is a Joyous Gift for Both Volunteers and Their Child Patients
T
here is nothing more satisfying than
sharing inspiring stories. And few
things meet that criteria like Iowa
Miles of Smiles Team’s (Iowa MOST’s)
annual medical mission to the Western
Highlands of Guatemala to save children
from lives without hope. Its 13th mission
will commence February 24, 2018.
Iowa MOST is spearheaded by the Iowa
City AM Rotary District 6000 Club, and
is comprised mostly of volunteer medical
staff from the University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics, including this year’s medical
team leader, renowned cleft surgeon Dr.
John Canady, as well as other selfless expert
doctors and professionals from surround-
ing areas. (A list of all the participants and

Deb Dunkhase is Iowa MOST’s mission
coordinator and quintessential ambas-
sador. (She is also the longtime executive
director of the Iowa Children’s Museum.)
Not only is Deb warm and enthusiastic (to
put it mildly), she recognizes a far deeper
aspect to what Iowa MOST provides: hope,
healing, and life-affirming transformation;
the kind that occurs when you give so com-
pletely to others, especially children.
Deb passionately asserts that being part
of Iowa MOST is “one of the biggest gifts of
my life.”
Iowa MOST’s altruistic men and women
possess a fierce devotion to children’s
health and well-being. This devotion is
expressed in an epic collaborative effort
with the medical staff at Huehuetenango,
Guatemala, that demands they travel once
a year to this remote part of the country to
preform cleft-lip and palate surgeries for as
many as 100 children in a single trip, suf-
fering throughout Guatemala’s extremely
impoverished Western Highlands’ villages.
The 40-member, all-volunteer team is
comprised of three cleft surgeons, one eyes/
ears/nose surgeon, an anesthesiologist
team, surgical nurses (including our own
Paula Sauceda from Davenport), a recovery
team, two dentists, a pediatrician and pedi-
atric team, and support staff, all of whom
courageously make the difficult journey to
operate in the most austere environments
where language can be a barrier, not to
mention having to overcome all manner of
obstacles arising from the extreme poverty
and cultural mores of their patients.
In Guatemala, one out of every 600 chil-
dren is born with a cleft defect. (Globally,
the average is one in 700.) However, Gua-
temala is considered among the poorest
nations in the world, with over 75 percent
living in extreme poverty. Consequently,
these families have no resources for medi-
cal help.
Cleft defects, if untreated, result in all
kinds of additional health problems, rang-
ing from severe dental problems, hearing
and seeing complications, and breathing
and respiratory conditions, to malnutrition
and eating disorders that evolve over time
into other debilitating illnesses and disease.
Furthermore, the physical discomfort
and pain associated with cleft defects, espe-
cially over time, erode both body and spirit.
Constant, chronic pain and disability when
talking, eating, breathing, occasionally
smiling, and even crying are unimaginable
to most of us who have modern medicines
and access to medical care – myriad rem-
edies that provide relief. Families subsisting
in extreme poverty in remote areas, such as
those in Guatemala, have no electricity or
running water, never mind relief. Instead,
villagers must walk several miles to a
potable stream for a safe drink of water.
Add to this the cultural stigma attached
to cleft deformities. In Guatemala’s
Western Highlands, children born with
cleft lips, palates, or both, are considered
cursed, therefore separated and ostracized
from normal village life. From birth, these
children are hidden away, isolated out
of shame. They are not allowed to go to
school, socialize with other children in the
village, or work in any capacity. They live
lives of unimaginable loneliness, sadness,
introversion, longing for normalcy, and
belonging that goes largely unfulfilled.
These innocent children are prohibited
from attending school and interacting with
other children, nor are they permitted to
work or participate socially, leaving their
potential to thrive utterly stalled. These
unfortunate kids grow up totally unedu-
cated, shamed, ridiculed, and isolated due
to the cultural stigma attached to their
badly disfigured little faces. Most cruelly of
all is the stark absence of hope that such an
existence fosters.
In America, if a child is born with cleft,
his or her condition is remedied within the
first year. It is usually a simple procedure to
reverse or repair, allowing the baby to grow
up normally with none of the emotional
scarring that otherwise accrues with such
defects. Those who have experienced some
form of disfigurement know all too well
the insecurity and sadness that constantly
looms. It is difficult enough to overcome
without the overwhelming socioeconomic
confinement and hopeless resignation
mandated by extreme poverty It is an
unspeakable fate.
Is it any wonder that compassion defines
Iowa MOST and the Iowa City AM Rotary
Club, along with 50 Iowa Rotary Clubs
who collectively fund this imperative mis-
sion through donations and two primary

nized by local high schools, whose efforts
help to raise the $50,000 necessary to fund
the annual medical mission to Guatemala.

developed a solid reputation for creativity,
high energy, and, you guessed it, talent! It
is no accident that it beautifully reflects the
mission it supports.
The second fundraiser is very success-

to the remote villages to recruit children
for the mission, overcoming monumental
obstacles to get children to the hospital for
screenings and, if their health permits, life-
changing surgeries.
The Guatemalan team must overcome
social and cultural taboos and deeply-
rooted fears, as well as provide most of
the resources to expedite parents’ ability
to make the journey with their children,
including transportation where pos-
sible (often much of it on foot, carrying
their toddlers with cleft defects), housing,
food, comforting parents, and providing
advocacy as their child goes through the
process.
It is hard to imagine the amount of work,
coordination, and infinite details that must
coalesce for this mission to succeed year
after year. Deb explains, “Lots and lots of
details go into medical missions. Most of us
don’t speak Spanish, so much of communi-
cation is openness and facial expressions.
You basically step into that world and give
of yourself. We want the families to feel safe
and cared for and not be afraid. The hos-
pitals in Guatemala are so under-supplied
and lacking in resources, people are afraid
to come to hospitals. Because the patients
are kids, we add a lot of play into the experi-
ence. We play, sing, and bond with the
kiddos and parents as much as we can to
make them comfortable.”
The first day is set aside for screen-
ings of each child to confirm he or she is
healthy enough to have the surgery (or

A Kennedy in Name, but Not
in Political Savvy

or a while now, the book on Chris Ken-
nedy has been that he may not be cut out
for a career in politics, despite his famous Kennedy’s abilities as a candidate as his
last name and pedigree as the son of Bobby
Kennedy and nephew of John F. Kennedy.
That thinking goes all the way back to
Kennedy’s disastrous performance after a
breakfast speech to Illinois delegates during
the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
Kennedy had a serious freak-out experience
in front of TV cameras as reporters jumped
on an elevator with him to ask questions.
The Democratic gubernatorial candi-
date has had some weird, uncomfortable
moments since then, but none so weird and
uncomfortable as a recent media availability. many people actually watched it. That’s the

Kennedy responded by defending the
Republican governor. “I think Bruce Rauner
is trying to do what he thinks is best for the
state of Illinois,” Kennedy said. “Now we
may disagree on what that is, but his willing-
ness to speak truth to power, to take on the
powers that have been strangling our econ-
omy for decades in this state is something
that I think he should be applauded for.”
I kinda get where Kennedy was trying to
go there. There is a strong vein within the
Democratic Party that despises the party’s
powers-that-be. By attacking powerful and
unpopular Democrats, Kennedy believes
he can reach those sorts of folks and also
immunize himself against attacks by Rauner reform schtick that it has become his go-to
during the fall election. (I doubt it’ll work
because Rauner will use his favorite “Blame
Madigan!” issue no matter who the nominee
is, but whatever.)
Before he can take on Rauner in the fall,
however, Kennedy has to win a Democratic
primary this spring. I shouldn’t have to even
say this, but Democrats don’t usually win
Democratic primaries by going out of their
way to heap compliments on an incum-
bent Republican who polls worse among
Democratic primary voters than … . Well,
just go ahead and complete that sentence
yourself with the worst possible thing you
can imagine.
There were plenty of other ways to say
what Kennedy said without patting Bruce
Rauner on the back. You’d think just about
any half-competent candidate could come
up with a few if pressed as Kennedy was

last week. That this was the way he chose to
answer the question shows as much about
abject failure to raise significant campaign
funds.
There was also a blowup last week when
Kennedy pulled a no-class stunt during
a candidates’ forum. He was asked to say
something nice about the other candi-
dates, but Kennedy said he just couldn’t say
anything positive about his billionaire rival
Pritzker.
Kennedy most definitely didn’t come off
as a happy warrior during that forum. He
seemed grumpy the whole time. But not
biggest mistake too often made by people
in this business. We all follow state politics
closely, but we
forget that few
I would
venture a guess
that if “normal”
people do hear
anything about
the forum through their various networks,
Kennedy’s insult will be high on that list.
What struck me the most, however, was
something I haven’t seen reported elsewhere.
Kennedy said he wanted to put another
billion dollars a year into higher education,
and the forum’s moderator Carol Marin
asked him how he would pay for it.
“There’s two buildings in Chicago that are
so under-assessed relative to their sales price,
there’s a billion dollars of missing value
from them alone,” Kennedy declared. “That
should pay 5 percent a year in taxes. That’s
$50 million a year.”
While I have no problem with booting
Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios from
office, I don’t think the man can be blamed
for underfunded state universities. Kennedy
is apparently so caught up in his property tax
answer on pretty much everything. Property
taxes are local revenues. The state doesn’t get
a cut.
Kennedy’s response was one of the
stupidest things I’ve ever heard proposed
by a supposedly legitimate candidate for gov-
ernor – and that’s really saying something.
With early voting about to begin, Kennedy
still hasn’t demonstrated that he’s ready for
prime time.

ugustana College’s production of
In the Next Room (or The Vibrator
Play) takes the audience back to the
simpler time of the 1800s, when electric-
ity was being discovered, doctors still
worked out of their homes, and females
were apparently so sexually repressed
they were driving themselves insane.
In this show’s time period, you see,
it was believed that women could not,
and did not, have any sexual desire.
Physicians claimed that sensual visions
and feelings of irritability, anxiousness,
and insomnia were mere side effects of
“hysteria” – a buildup of fluids in the
womb. With the excitement of electric-
ity’s invention still in the air, Sarah
Ruhl’s play finds Dr. Givings (Tristan
Odenkirk) inventing a vibrating machine
to help relieve females of their hysteria.
And while I wasn’t in love with the mate-
rial, I did enjoy all of the cast’s individual
performances, with the production as a
whole, under Jennifer Popple’s direction,
coming together very nicely.
I’m constantly blown away by the
sets every time I walk into Augustana
productions, and on January 26, it was
the two-story home of Dr. and Mrs. Giv-
ings as created by scenic designer Emma
Brutman, featuring a picturesque living
room with rounded steps leading to the
doctor’s examining room – in this case,
The Next Room. With characters having
to travel up and down the steps, the set’s
double levels added much in the way
of tension; when Dr. Givings leads wife
Catherine (the bubbly Micaela Cushing)
up the steps to show her his new instru-
ment, the anticipation built into their
climb added to the uncertainty of what
was about to happen.
Odenkirk delivers a wonderfully
varied performance, exuding just the
right emotions when upset with his wife
for her “betrayal” in touching another
man’s cheek, and taking a delightfully
nonchalant attitude when applying his
“therapy” to patients. Cushing’s cheery
disposition, meanwhile, was impressively
juxtaposed with Catherine’s actual feel-
ings. Struggling with her milk coming
in after giving birth, she is resigned to
having their neighbors’ house maid
Elizabeth (Brinda Murali) feed the child,
and the excellent Cushing expresses so
much with her face whenever Elizabeth
is in the room, her pain and disappoint-
ment in herself extremely apparent in her
eyes.
Murali is fascinating to watch as the
nervous house maid to neighbors Mr.
and Mrs. Daldry (Jaryd Whitmore and
Melina Herman). Elizabeth has just lost
her own baby – that’s why she’s able to
feed Mrs. Givings’ – and Murali plays the
role with a lot of nervous energy, looking
fearful to even make eye contact.
Like Catherine, Mrs. Sabrina Daldry
has a lot of pent-up energy at the top of
In the Next Room, and as she’s treated
by Dr. Givings, we see her loosen up and
begin finding out more about who she
really is. Herman does a fine job of dem-
onstrating the character’s full emotional
arc throughout the performance, and
Whitmore delivers a lot of hysterically
oblivious lines, many of them Ruhl’s
blatant swings at innuendo.
The majority of the comedy begins
to arrive at the top of Act II with the
arrival of world traveler Leo Irving, and
portrayer James Wheeler added a whole
new energy as this frustrated, lovelorn
artist. Even with his simple entrance and
acknowledgment of the on-stage women
(“Ladies … ”), he had the opening-night
audience laughing, and his charisma
appeared to be a large part of why Cath-
erine begins to recognize her desires.
One thing the entire cast handles quite
well is the bone-dry delivery of Ruhl’s
comedic lines, with much of their speedy
timing and presentation bringing Brit-
ish comedies to mind – where so much
is said with a single eyebrow lift that if
you’re not paying attention, you could
easily miss the joke. I was very apprecia-
tive of how director Popple chose not to
make a big meal of each gag, but rather
kept the tempo moving, trusting us to
appreciate the humor without giving us
a big wink.
While In the Next Room may, on the
surface, seem to just be a story of how
the modern-day vibrator came to be, at
its heart it’s about how each of us desires
to be loved. Ruhl’s script is definitely not
short on obvious innuendo. But surpris-
ingly, there’s also quite a bit of drama,
with the most touching scene probably
the climax (so to speak) that leads to a
lovely encounter under the stars.
In the Next Room (or The Vibrator
Play) was not as much of a comedy as I’d
expected, but in telling of how a few 19th
Century women found their liberation
and strength, it’s a timely and totally
appropriate script for the times we’re in
right now.

Sleuth, at the Black Box Theatre through February 11
A
nyone looking for a fun and
suspenseful theatrical romp need
look no further than the Black Box
Theatre’s second-season opener Sleuth –
Anthony Shaffer’s Tony-winning mystery-
thriller set in Wilshire, England, in 1970.
Sleuth revolves around Andrew
Wyke (played by Pat Flaherty), an aging
detective-fiction novelist with a love of
gamesmanship, and Milo Tindle (Phillip
Dunbridge), a younger, more handsome
man who is having an affair with Wyke’s
wife Marguerite. And the first thing that
struck me about the Black Box’s produc-
tion was the set designed by director Lora
Adams, because the moment I saw it, I
was impressed with its overall complete-
ness. From the grandfather clock to the
functional lamps to the blazing fireplace,
here was a set to rival any that I’ve seen
in the Quad Cities in many a year, and an
indication that the Black Box is striving
to become a formidable force in the area-
theatre scene.
Included on the set was the mannequin
Jolly Jack Tar – a gap-toothed, rosy-
cheeked sailor created by Erin Churchill
– that reminded me of one of my aunt’s
Toby Mugs. Jack Tar’s only purpose is to
laugh at Wyke’s witty remarks, and even
though its laughter seemed to be coming
from the other end of the stage, it was still
a visual treat.
I’d imagine that directing a show in
this space can be challenging considering
its long, narrow stage and equally long,
narrow seating, but Adams (one of the
Black Box’s co-founders) does an admi-
rable job spreading the action out so that
there are no bad seats in the house. And
Adams certainly couldn’t have asked for a
more appropriate cast.

So much has been said about Flaherty’s
performances over the years that I hesi-
tate to add more here for fear of being
accused of plagiarism. Suffice it to say
Flaherty has brought a smile to my face
in everything I have ever seen him act in,
and his portrayal in Sleuth was certainly
no exception.
Dunbridge’s Tindle, meanwhile, is the
perfect foil for Wyke’s smarmy superior-
ity. Although a newcomer to the Quad
Cities theatre scene, Dunbridge brings
an experienced actor’s depth to Tindle,
a second generation Italian-Englishman

Inclusion, Diversity, and Scandal-Avoidance Created an Awards Year That’s Hard (but Not Impossible) to Hashtag
O
n January 23, a few hours after the
official announcement of nomi-
nees for the 90th Annual Academy
Awards, I sent our publisher Todd my
annual article recapping the morning’s
news, along with the full list of what was
nominated. Not long after, he replied.
“Wow!” his e-mail began. “Behold:
#OscarsSoNoIsms. No racism. No ageism.
No chauvinism. Even no comicbookism.”
That’s such an ideal 12-word summary
of what happened regarding this year’s
Oscars nominations that I’m tempted to
leave it at that and move right into the
predictions. But I suppose a few words of
explanation are perhaps in order.
No racism:
After two deeply unfortunate seasons
of #OscarsSoWhite – with no perform-
ers of color recognized in the acting
races and only sporadic recognition for
minority talents in 20 additional cat-
egories – last January’s lineup decisively
bucked what was beginning to look like
a trend. And this year, the recent push
for diversity spearheaded by former
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs
continued to be felt: acting nominations
for Mudbound’s Mary J. Blige (also a Best
Original Song nominee), Get Out’s Daniel
Kaluuya, The Shape of Water’s Octa-
via Spencer, and Roman J. Israel, Esq.’s
Denzel Washington; producing, screen-
writing, and directing citations for Get
Out’s Jordan Peele, making him the fift h
black Best Directing nominee in Oscar
history; an Original Screenplay nod for
The Big Sick’s Pakistani-American Kumail
Nanjiani; an Adapted Screenplay nod for
Mudbound’s Virgil Williams and Dee
Rees, the latter the first black woman ever
nominated in that category; a nomination
for Kobe Bryant – yes, that Kobe Bryant
– for Best Animated Short inclusion Dear
Basketball; and Documentary Feature
recognition for Strong Island’s Yance
Ford, a black filmmaker who’s also the
first transgender man ever nominated by
the Academy.
No ageism:
At 85, Star Wars: The Last Jedi com-
poser John Williams received his 51st (!)
career nomination. At 88, All the Money
in the World’s Christopher Plummer
became the oldest performer ever nomi-
nated for an Academy Award. At 89, Call
Me by Your Name’s James Ivory became
the oldest screenwriter ever nominated.
At a slightly older 89, French director
Agnès Varda, for her documentary Faces
Places, became the oldest person ever
Oscar-nominated for anything. (Varda
was born on May 30, 1918; Ivory on
June 7.) And on the opposite side of the
age spectrum, Call Me by Your Name’s
22-year-old star Timothée Chalamet
became the youngest Best Actor nomi-
nee since Babes in Arms’ Mickey Rooney
in 1940, as well as the category’s third-
youngest contender of all time.

PHANTOM THREAD
If the news is true, and Paul Thomas
Anderson’s Phantom Thread does indeed
mark Daniel Day-Lewis’ retirement from
acting, it’s an occasion for remorse, if
also delight that the legendary performer
is at least going out on a high note. (The
movie is deservedly nominated for six
Academy Awards including Best Picture,
Director, and Actor.) But woven into the
sadness of “No more Daniel!” is a very
specific kind of regret, because man is
it a shame the guy didn’t make more

I’m a single 33-year-old woman. Sud-
denly, after years of outdoor sports, I
have a dime-sized dark brown sunspot
on my face. It’s not cancerous, and I’m
having it lasered off. This will take a
while. Though I cover it with makeup,
I’m terribly self-conscious about it, and
I don’t want to date till it’s removed. I
know how visual men are, and I don’t
want a man to find out I have this thing
and see me as unattractive. My friends
say I’m being ridiculous.

It’s a spot on your face that suggests
you’ve done some stuff in the sun; it isn’t
the Mark of Satan or a button with a mes-
sage underneath: “Press here to activate the
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”
Your intuition that a clear, even complex-
ion is important isn’t off base. Anthropolo-
gist Bernhard Fink and his colleagues did
some pretty cool research on how skin tone
uniformity affects perceptions of a woman’s
attractiveness. This isn’t a new area of study,
but almost all of the research has been on
Western populations. Social science find-
ings are more likely to be representative of
human nature when the subject pool goes
beyond the usual “WEIRD” participants
(from Western, Educated, Industrialized,
Rich, and Democratic countries – and,
more often than not, 19-year-old college
undergrads fighting a wicked hangover to
answer survey questions for class credit).
So Fink and his team sought out 172 men
and women, ages 17 to 80, from two remote
tribes – the cattle-raising Maasai in Tanza-
nia and the forager-farmer Tsimane tribe in
Bolivia – each “unfamiliar with lighter-
colored skin.” The researchers explain that
these tribes have no electricity and “little
or no access” to magazines or newspapers
from the West. They also live far from any
tourist destinations, so no – no pale-faced
college girls dropping by, all “C’mon, Mr.
Maasai … just one more selfie with me and
your totally adorbs cow!”
Tribe members were asked to assess “age,
health, and attractiveness” from photo-
graphs of skin – squares of white-lady skin
cropped from photos of faces of British girls
and women ages 11 to 76. Echoing find-
ings from Western populations, women
with “homogenous skin color” – meaning
even in tone overall, with little or no “skin
discoloration” (blotches or spots) – “were

Research finds that humans, in general,
prefer faces with clear, uniform skin, which
is associated with being parasite- and
disease-free. There’s also strong support,
from cross-cultural studies, for the notion
by evolutionary psychologists that men
evolved to be drawn to female features that
suggest a woman is young and healthy –
and thus more likely to be fertile. Men just
don’t think of it in so many words – “Better
babies when Mommy’s got skin like an
airbrushed Vogue cover girl!” – especially
not in places where the nearest newsstand
is maybe four days away by donkey.
Because women coevolved with men,
women anticipate this male preference for
flawless skin – leading them to feel, um,
undersparkly when their facial landscape is
less than pristine.
This brings us to you. The thing is, you
aren’t just a skin dot with a person attached.
A guy will look at the whole. Also, we
accept that people use products and tech-
nology to hide or fix flaws in their appear-
ances – or to enhance the features they
have. Accordingly, a guy is not defrauding
you by using Rogaine, and no man with an
IQ that exceeds your bra size believes you
were born wearing eye shadow.
Ultimately, you have more control than
you probably realize over how much any
imperfections affect your total attractive-
ness. A woman I know is a living example
of this. She’s got two fewer legs than most
of us. But she understands – and shows it in
the way she carries herself – that she’s vastly
more than the sum of her (missing) parts.
In other words, your real problem is you
– your feeling that this spot is some kind of
boulder-sized diminisher of your worth.
Chances are, this comes from putting too
much weight on your looks as the source of
your value. Though you may not be where
you want in your career, doing regular
meaningful work to help other people
– such as volunteer work – might be the
quickest way for you to feel bigger than that
dot on your face.
There’s nothing wrong with getting it
lasered off, but as long as it’s still with you,
try something: Revel in having it instead
of going into hiding over it. I’m serious.
After all, it’s basically a sign that you went
outdoors and seized life – not that you got
drunk and joined one of those racist Tiki
torch marches and now have to hit up some
tattoo artist to turn the swastikas into but-
terflies.

VIRGO (August 23-September 22):
Many varieties of the nettle plant will
sting you if you touch the leaves and
stems. Their hairs are like hypoder-
mic needles that inject your skin with a blend
of irritant chemicals. And yet nettle is also an
herb with numerous medicinal properties. It
can provide relief for allergies, arthritis, joint
pain, and urinary problems. That’s why
Shakespeare invoked the nettle as a metaphor
in his play Henry IV, Part 1: “Out of this nettle,
danger, we pluck this flower, safety,” says the

flea market in Adamstown,

twenties, I smoked marijuana now

Turn the Recording Tape On at Scott County Board Meetings
S
cott County taxpayers were ill-served
recently by County Supervisors
Earnhardt, Knobbe, and Beck when
they voted to remove language in the
minutes for January 9, 2018’s Committee
of the Whole board meeting that reflected
Auditor Moritz’s public disapproval of a
proposed policy change regarding depart-
mental purchasing cards.
Moritz, whose elected role includes
formally documenting and publishing the
minutes of the county board committee
of the whole and board meetings, stepped
outside the status quo when she provided
the minutes for the January 9 committee of
the whole meeting which included text that
showed she was on-record at that meeting,
opposing the following proposed policy
changes:
General Policy 11: “Purchasing”
increases the departmental purchas-
ing authority by $5,000 to account for
inflation. Any purchases, contracts, or
leases exceeding $15,000 will be brought
to the Board of Supervisors for approval.
Additionally, language was added to
clarify the process for professional service
agreements.
General Policy 26: “Purchasing Card”
mirrors the increased purchasing levels in
General Policy 11.
Additionally, it removes all language
references to a specific vendor, Wells
Fargo Bank – Supervisor Knobbe’s former
employer.

all of whom perform physical examinations
to identify any additional or related issues
that need to be addressed with the cleft
repair and/or extraneous problems that
might interfere with a successful outcome.
Iowa MOST’s primary concern is safety
for these children. If a child has complica-
tions that prohibit the cleft surgery, the
team is often able to secure the proper care
to resolve that child’s issue(s), clearing him
or her for the cleft procedure(s) during the
next mission.
“Often the same kids are seen year after
year that need follow up procedures,” says
Deb, “so we get to watch their progress.
They are so sad when they first come, and
are scared witless, as are their parents. But
once they get through the first procedure
and experience the initial changes, they

for minutes of the meetings is to only
provide the public with the most stripped-
down version of what happened. In Scott
County, this means all that is recorded is
the time the meeting started and ended,
who made or seconded a motion, and how
each supervisor voted on said motion. No
inclusion of who was a guest speaker from
the private sector or other governments,
or which staff member spoke on which
agenda item, or what any of the discussion
around an agenda item consisted of. Some
rightly claim recording tedious informa-
tion is potentially burdensome. But that is
often subjective at best. Meanwhile, if Scott
Countians wish to have more details, the
agenda and the correlating attachments
are readily available at the county Web site,
and the meetings (every other Tuesday at
8 a.m., and Thursday at 5 p.m.) are open to
the public.
Many of us who have attended conten-
tious meetings find the so-called minutes
of the meeting thoroughly uninforma-
tive in their brevity and lack of insight
into which elected officials are actually
supervising, and which ones continue
to rubber-stamp what staff puts before
them. That is why concerned citizens and
this publication have often called for the
County Supervisor public meetings to be
recorded as audio files and posted at the
county site adjacent to the minutes.

slowly start to smile and come out of their
shell. Their personalities begin to emerge
and we get to watch the transformation. It
is really exciting, and why we do what we
do.
“And as wonderful as what we do for the
kiddos is,” Deb emphasizes, “the impact
it has on the volunteers and team is even
more so.”
One final story illustrates the almost
magical spirit of what takes place during
Iowa MOST missions. After years of repair-
ing cleft lips and palates for children and
teens, an older villager approached the
team and asked to have surgery to fix his
cleft lip. This elderly man was 70 years old
when he reached out to this extraordinary
medical team who happily and successfully
performed the surgery. His own bravery
brought him to the welcoming care offered

media, and as a matter of record.
Some supervisors will point to prior
discussions about recording meetings, and
that staff has provided recommendations
that include expensive software, and hiring
a new full time staffer to administer said
software, that would video record and sync
the agenda items with said video record-
ing. “This is how Johnson County does it,
and if we’re going to record meetings, we
are going to do it top-notch,” was Carol
Earnhardt’ evaluation of the matter, and
her summary is shared by some staff.
Of course, this run-before-we-walk
approach adds more cost to the taxpayers,
and makes a simple solution a complex
new project. More importantly, it justifies
dismissing the policy as too costly and
complicated. Never mind that the board is
already audio recording closed sessions to
tape, using the existing microphones and
equipment, and that that asset can readily
be leveraged to simply record an MP3 file
that can be posted with each record of the
meetings’ minutes.
Detractors of recording meetings break
out the old saw that it fosters grandstand-
ing by both the elected officials and
citizens looking for their 15 minutes of
fame, wasting time and embarrassing our

What’s embarrassing is how ill-prepared
and unengaged certain supervisors are for
meetings, and how disdainfully some past
supervisors have treated the public when
there is the rare opportunity for the public
to engage them at meetings.
The upside of simply recording the audio
files is immediate and lasting account-
ability for how these supervisors conduct
themselves doing the business of the
people of Scott County. The market place
of ideas and civic engagement will take
care of itself with a simple audio file.
Case in point: Ms. Mortiz’s comments,
had they been available on an audio file,
could be downloaded and reviewed by
other local media and concerned citizens
alike. Anyone who wants to engage their
representatives about a purchasing card
policy that triples the ceiling on single pur-
chases under the guise of “inflation” (with
no supporting evidence that it is actually
needed) can readily get up to speed on
Moritz’s concerns.
Contact your County Supervisors and
demand they turn the recording tape
on during the regular meetings too, and
simply post the audio file for the simplest
and most cost-effective measure of trans-
parency.
