The Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi is the oldest hospital in Kenya. Founded in 1901

3. WORK DONE DURING THE ATTACHMENT AND EXPERIENCE GAINED

This section discusses the general and specific activities that I undertook while on attachment
staff at Kenyatta National Hospital. Reporting time is 8.00AM and leaving the institution is at
5.00PM.

3.1 WORK DONE DURING THE ATTACHMENT

ICT Helpdesk- it involves receiving different issues and problems from other staffs from
different departments; issues related to ICT. After receiving the issues first you pen down the
record then second you assign duty to an available staff within the department for appropriate
action or help. Thirdly, is after the issue(s) are resolved record the solutions that led to
resolving the issue(s). The entries therefore are transferred from the book entry to a data
website called spiceworks that aids in service chatter.

Solving the Hospital Management Information Software (HMIS) issues- this involves solving
basic problems concerning the Software like: software installation from the server to
workstation, software reinstallation from the server to workstation to increase efficiency in
the event the system is slow or hanging.

Solving general computer issues- this includes a wide range of issues related to the computer
hardware components and its software components. It involves troubleshooting of both
hardware and software components of the computer.

Setting up a printer directly using a usb-cable or setting it up over the network using a
ethernet-cable. It also involves troubleshooting the printer hardware components like
replacing the toner among others, or downloading and installing printer drivers to a computer.

Connecting a computer to a public domain- involves connecting a computer at the

workstation to the Hospital network or the public domain in order to access resources within
the domain.

Installation of other software- involves installing different software like the operating system,
browsers, Ms Office suite, antivirus, computer drivers among others.

Networking- this includes a wide range of networking solutions like: networking computers,
crimping network cables, trunking network cables, configuring switches and routers among
others.

10
3.2 EXPERIENCE GAINED
I gained an idea on how to connect a computer to a public domain and how to access
information/data from the server and how to share information/data with other computers
within the same network.

Help desk services- This helped me improve my communication and social skills as I
interacted with various users/staffs/clients over phone. It also helped me improve my verbal
language and equipped me with courtesy as I was interacting with the Clients.

Similarly, I improved my confidence levels when interacting with different people/staff of

different statue within the management circle.

I also gained significant knowledge on how to troubleshoot a hardware component of a

computer, it includes checking if the RAM is fitted correctly, the processor’s fan is
functioning correctly, the hard disk drive is fitted correctly or the power unit has failed that is
if the computer is not booting.

I also gained a significant knowledge on how to crimp network cables, how to punch down
the cables, best solutions for trunking the cables to enhance neatness and how to troubleshoot
a network problem.

Above all, I gained knowledge on windows server administration and Cisco based
networking. It entails configuring of the server, switches and routers to a particular network.
Therefore resources are accessed from the workstation by the clients but are running on the
servers. I also gained knowledge on CCTV administration that was used majorly to monitor
movements around the hospital and malicious activities.

11
4SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Summary of attachment activities

 ICT Helpdesk.
 Solving Hospital Management Information Software (HMIS) issues.
 Solving general computer issues.
 Setting up and configuring a printer.
 Connecting a computer to a public domain.
 Installation of other software.
 Networking

4.2 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE PROGRAMME

The University training program was rather more theoretical hence when I was confronted
with the tasks outlined previously; it was quite difficult to explain and outline the expected
outcomes. Most of the concepts were exhaustively discussed in class but not experimented or
put to practice.

Configuring of servers, switches and routers, and administration of windows server was
something I never did before. It took me some good time to understand and also be able to
run commands within the entire architecture.

Hostility from clients/staff that never believed in interns really downgraded my morale to
take up chores; it was so disheartening to be look upon as quack and also solving problems
that recur after a while thus raising eyebrows.

4.3 SUGGESTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE SCHEME

The University training programme should be improved to cater for practical concepts as
more as theoretical concepts are enhanced. This will help the student to understand the bigger
picture of solving fundamental issues related to ICT Technology effectively.

A programme should be put in place to enhance the student with the knowledge of windows
server administration, Linux server administration, Cisco based networking and other
fundamental networking concepts.

12
5. CONCLUSIONS

To conclude, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is an institution that serves the whole
country and also extends referral services to patients across East and Central Africa hence the
systems that they have put in place are of good standards and work effectively to serve
patients and the entire public at large. They have a good training programme for both
attachment staff and regular staff called ‘The Oshe’. The programme simply explains and
outlines the rules of engagement and protocols to be followed when at work.

The ICT Department of Kenyatta National Hospital is very supportive to the attachment staff.
They readily and occasionally train the attachment staff on protocols and activities to be
followed when executing duty or serving the Clients.

On the other hand, Industrial attachment is very good and healthy for students since it gives
them the chance to enhance their practical capabilities and combine them with their
theoretical endeavours that they do at school. This prepares the Students to take up chores
effectively in future when they are called upon or when they’re employed after completion of
their undergraduate studies.
