In the Karlsruhe region you only pay one tariff for a ticket that can be used on all city railroad, trams,
regional trains, and bus lines that are operated by the Karlsruhe Verkehrsverbund (KVV - this is the local
transport authority). So one ticket will suffice for all methods of transportation. You can obtain tickets
from vending machines at the various stops. Tickets are also available from outlets in the market place,
at the central train station and in the "Europaplatz". If no vending machine is available, you can buy a
ticket from the driver. Please note: The vending machines in the trams and trains do not accept bank
notes, only coins. To be valid your ticket must be stamped with the current date before the start of your
journey. This can be done by inserting your ticket into the yellow stamping machines found on all the
transport services. In most cases, if you have obtained your ticket from a vending machine, it will have
been already stamped.
There are several types of tickets available: For a day trip in Karlsruhe it is best to buy the Citykarte
solo. This costs 4,90 € per person, and entitles the bearer to travel anywhere within Karlsruhe, as far as
Ettlingen, Wörth, Stutensee, Pfinztal, Rheinstetten or Weingarten within 24 hours of the date stamped on
the ticket. For small groups of up to 5 people there is the City plus ticket, which costs 7,70 € and also
entitles the group to travel anywhere within Karlsruhe, as far as Ettlingen, Wörth, Stutensee, Pfinztal or
Weingarten within 24 hours of the date stamped on the ticket. For journeys that exceed the inner region
(for example, Baden-Baden, Pforzheim, Landau, Bad Herrenalb, Eppingen or Forbach) there is the
Regiokarte solo, which costs 8,60 € and is valid for 24 hours of the date stamped on the ticket. For
small groups of up to 5 people there is the Regio plus ticket which costs 14,50 € and entitles groups to
travel beyond the inner region (for example, Baden-Baden, Pforzheim, Landau, Bad Herrenalb, Eppingen
or Forbach) and is also valid for 24 hours. The RegioX solo ticket entitles the bearer to travel to
Freudenstadt, Baiersbronn, Bad Wildbad, or Heilbronn; it costs 14,00 € for one person and for small
groups of up to 5 people the RegioX plus ticket costs 22,50 € and is valid for 24 hours. The City and
Regio tickets for one person are also available as four trip tickets at a reduced rate.
For a short journey a single ticket is also available. The cost of this ticket depends on the distance you
wish to travel. Karlsruhe is divided into "zones" and the price of your ticket increases for every zone you
pass through on your journey. So for example, to travel in Karlsruhe you pass through two "zones" and
so must pay for both "zones" you pass through, also to travel from Karlsruhe to Baden-Baden you pass
through seven "zones", so you would have to pay for seven "zones". You can find a map of all the zones
at every major stop.
The KVV has a service telephone number: 0721/6107-5885. You can call this number on weekdays
between 07:00 and 19:00 and on Saturdays between 07:00 and 13:00 for service information, schedule
times and tariff information.
