Goods Movements Task Force Logistics

Goods Movements

This document was created in the context of the Retail Task Force Logistics. It is intended to assist
consultants in their initial orientation. Detailed methods of dealing with problems are discussed ac-
cording to topics in separate documents for Task Force Logistics. You can find these documents

1 Embedding in the Standard Process

The presentation “LES Goods Movements” is available as an introduction. It is divided up into the
following areas:
• Goods movements including goods receipt/transfer posting/stock transfer/goods issue are de-
fined.
• The following topics are dealt with in the status quo area:
o MBXX goods movements with a decentralized WMS
o MBXX goods movements HUM scenario (via delivery) with Customizing MM/LES
• Overview of the VLMOVE functionality plus gaps

What Are Goods Movements?

A goods movement is a process that causes a change to the

stock.

l Goods receipt
n A goods receipt (GR) is a goods movement with which the receipt of
goods from an external vendor or from the production is posted. A
goods receipt leads to an increase in the warehouse stock.
l Goods issue
n A goods issue (GI) is a goods movement with which a material
withdrawal or issue, a material consumption or a goods shipment to a
customer is posted. A goods issue leads to a decrease in the
warehouse stock.

ã SAP AG 1999 Page: 4 Freitag, 9. November 2001

What Are Goods Movements?

l Stock transfer
n A stock transfer is the removal of materials from storage from a
specific storage location and their placement in storage to
another storage location. Stock transfers can take place both in the
same plant and between two separate plants
l Transfer posting
n A transfer posting is a generic term for stock transfers and
changes to the stock identification or qualification of a
material, regardless of whether the posting involves a physical
movement or not.

If the goods movements previously referred to individual materials, it is now possible

to group several materials together in one HU. The goods movement then includes the
entire HU.

Handling Unit - Definition

l Handling Unit (HU) is the SAP term for a packaged unit

(pallet, container, heavy goods vehicles (HGV)) and
describes the physical grouping together of
n Packing materials (for example, pallets, boxes, shrink-wrap,
containers, HGVs)
n Goods (that are transported, stored and consumed)

l This definition is identical to that of a shipping unit which

exists in the R/3 since Release 2.2
l Every HU has a clear identification number and is
therefore unique in the System. All types of information
can be accessed and read with this number (this is new)

Delivery in the HU Scenario

l When is a delivery created?

n If at least one storage location is HU-managed

l Which MBxx goods movement creates which delivery category?

n Goods receipt creates delivery category “ID” = inbound delivery
n Goods issue creates delivery category “OD” = outbound delivery
n Transfer posting creates delivery category “TP” = outbound delivery for
transfer postings
n Stock transfer creates delivery category “TP” = inbound and/or outbound
delivery
w According to criteria: Full WM, HU requirement, Lean WM

l The delivery is the basis for the actual goods movement with the
creation of a material document

VLMOVE Outlook – Gaps

l Gaps
n You cannot create material documents directly from a combination of materials
and handling units
n The choice of movement type is limited
n You cannot make postings for purchase orders, orders, projects, and so on
n No influence on individual materials in a handling unit that is divided up, if the
material document is to be created without a delivery (only header row),
although it is possible for delivery creation
n Not all movement types that can be posted using the delivery function are
supported by the direct creation of a material document
l Outlook
n Expand Gaps
n Subsequent processing of goods movements for deliveries including handling
units for all movement types possible without restrictions
n Consistency check on existing data in VLMOVE
