ACI 318-14 ACI 318- Report

Calculation per ACI 318-14 Chapter 17, ACI 318-11 Appendix D and this report
Ref. 11 Ref. Ref.
Step 1. Calculate steel capacity, 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑠𝑠
17.3.3(a) D.4.3(a) Table 4
𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑠𝑠 = 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝐴𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 ∙ 𝑓𝑓𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 = 0.75 ∙ 2 ∙ 0.103 𝑖𝑖𝑛𝑛2 ∙ 104,500 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 = 16,145 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙
Check whether 𝑓𝑓𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 is not greater than 1.9 fya and 125,000 psi.
17.4.1.2 D.5.1.2 §4.1.2
1.9 ∙ 𝑓𝑓𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦 = 1.9 ∙ 83,500 = 158,650 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 > 125,000 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 > 𝑓𝑓𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 = 104,500 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 ∴ 𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨

Step 2. Calculate concrete breakout strength of anchor in tension using steps 2a through 2h

Step 2a. Verify minimum member thickness, spacing and edge distance:
ℎ = 6 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖. ≥ ℎ𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 = 6 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖. ∴ 𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨

Figure 4
For 𝑐𝑐𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 = 7 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖.,
𝑠𝑠𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 = 6 − (2.75 − 7)(−3.25) = −7.81 < 6 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 ∴ 𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨

Step 2b. Calculate 𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 and 𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 for the group:

2
𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 = 9ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 = 9 ∙ (3.25)2 = 95.1𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖.2 17.4.2.1 D.5.2.1 Table 4
𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 = 1.5ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 + 𝑐𝑐3ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 + 𝑠𝑠 = [1.5 ∙ (3.25) + 7][3 ∙ (3.25) + 6] = 187𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖.2 < 2 ∙ 𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 = 190 𝑖𝑖𝑛𝑛2 ∴ 𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨𝐨

Step 2c. Determine 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑛𝑛 : 𝑒𝑒′𝑛𝑛 = 0 ∴ 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑁𝑁 = 1.0 17.4.2.4 D.5.2.4 -

Step 2d. Calculate breakout capacity of a single anchor
17.4.2.2 D.5.2.2 Table 4
𝑁𝑁𝑏𝑏 = 𝑘𝑘𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 𝜆𝜆𝑎𝑎 𝑓𝑓𝑐𝑐′ ℎ1.5
𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 = 17 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 3,000 ∙ 3.25

= 5456 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙.
Step 2e. Determine 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑁𝑁 : 𝑐𝑐𝑎𝑎,𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 ≥ 1.5 ∙ ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 ∴ 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑁𝑁 = 1.0 17.4.2.5 D.5.2.5 Table 4
Step 2f. Determine 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 : 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 = 1.0 for both cracked and uncracked concrete with 𝑘𝑘𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 and 𝑘𝑘𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 from Table 4. 17.4.2.6 D.5.2.6 Table 4
§ 4.1.10
Step 2g. Determine 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 : 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 = 1.0 for cracked concrete. - -
Table 4
𝐴𝐴𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 187 17.4.2.1 D.5.2.1 § 4.1.3
Step 2h. Calculate 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 𝜙𝜙 ∙ ∙ 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑁𝑁 ∙ 𝛹𝛹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒,𝑁𝑁 ∙ 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 ∙ 𝛹𝛹𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐,𝑁𝑁 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑏𝑏 = 0.65 ∙ ∙ 1.0 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 5456 = 6,977 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙

𝑓𝑓𝑐𝑐′ 3000 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 17.4.3.2 D.5.3.2 § 4.1.4
Step 3. Check pullout strength: Table 3, 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑝𝑝,𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 ∙  = 0.65 ∙ 2 ∙ 3260 ∙  = 4,642 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙
2,500 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 2,500 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 17.3.3(c) D.4.3(c) Table 4
Step 4. Controlling strength: 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑠𝑠 = 16,145 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙; 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 6,977 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙; 𝜙𝜙 ∙ 𝑛𝑛 ∙ 𝑁𝑁𝑝𝑝,𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 4,642 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙
