PITTSBURGH SUSTAINABLE
STORMWATER CENTER
sustainable stormwater management
research and education center

This project demonstrates HOW A STORMWATER

RESEARCH AND EDUCTION CENTER and its urban
connections can activate an industrial riverfront and
MITIGATE COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS.

A public park becomes a CONNECTION between the

NEIGHBORHOOD, the RIVER and the STORMWATER
RESEARCH CENTER while serving as visible example
of a SUSTAINABLE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT.
TRANSFORMING A RIVER from to
INDUSTRIAL AREA this this
PITTSBURGH HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM
Many of Pittsburgh’s sewers carry both stormwater runoff and sewage. WITH
EVEN MINOR RAIN EVENTS THE COMBINED SEWERS OVERFLOW DIRECTLY
INTO THE REGION’S STREAMS AND RIVERS. This problem has become so bad
that THE RIVER WATER IS UNSAFE TO TOUCH FOR HALF OF EACH YEAR’S RIVER
RECREATION SEASON.

The INDUSTRIAL AREAS THAT BORDER impervious surfaces -

much of THE THREEE RIVERS in
industrial river zone THE CURRENT PROPOSED SOLUTION IS A $2 BILLION
Pittsburgh are composed of mostly
IMPERVIOUS SURFACES, WHICH
PROJECT USING “GREY” INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNOLOGIES.
DISRUPTS THE NATURAL WATER CYCLE.
As stormwater flows over these
pollutants heat erosion
impervious surfaces, THE WATER IS
heavy metals, fertilizers, sediment, road runoff heats up flowing over impervious stormwater outfalls can erode waterway
HEATED, PICKS UP POLLUTANTS , AND surface pollution surfaces edges adding sediment

CAUSES EROSION.
THE SOLUTION GREEN STORMWATER SOLUTIONS these are the building blocks to a distributed green stormwater system

REINTRODUCING PERVIOUS, NATURAL

SYSTEMS OF SOIL AND PLANTS
will slow the flow of stormwater to
waterways and sewers, return water
to the atmosphere and ground, and
provide habitats for animals and
insects.
LAWRENCEVILLE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO WATER

Pittsburgh lies at the confluence of 3
of greenspace
The neighborhood of Lawrenceville is a Like many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh
rivers. The Allegheny to the north and gentrifying urban neighborhood with its Lawrencville’s industrial area developed Lawrenceville’s cultural life is isolated
the Monongahela to the south flow edge on the Allegheny River. The river along the river. This zone idealy should from the river and the neighborhood has
together to form the Ohio River. The edge is occupied by industrial uses with act as a buffer for stormwater on its path little greenspace.
nighborhood of Lawrenceville lies on very little space developed for public to the river,. Currently this zone is both
the southern bank of the Allegheny interaction with the river. impervious to stormwater and is a barrier
for residents to access the river.
