I. RATIONALÉ:

Philippines is known for its people that showcase great talents, enhancing
the skills through a variety of talents that they have become famous for: dancing,
painting, singing, acting and other form of arts. A majority of Filipinos live in
different parts of the world working to be a champ in different talent shows, like
Lea Salongga, who is world-known Broadway singer and won the very first Miss
Saigon role and awarded as "Disney Legend" for her sweet voice and songs for
popular award-winning animated films. Charice Pempengco and now known as
Jake Zyrus and different hiphop groups have competed in prestigious talent
contests. True that we, Filipinos, are talented, different and ordinary with
extraordinary lives.

As time goes by, the traditional ones have become contemporary. Our
country is also widely known for its folk dances and native songs. Every region
has their own story, every song and dance has its own story, on how it all started
and originated. We are widely known for festivals that most of the foreigners visit
for, like Ati-Atihan, Panagbenga, Kadayawan, Masskara festival and religious
festivals of the different parts of the Philippines. Due to our different festivities,
our culture and great hospitality, it captivates one's foreign heart and most of
them tried and like to stay for a good in our country.

Above those different folk songs and dances, we are also known as great
contemporary dance performers, eventually in hip-hop and in several trending
dancer challenges in social media. This shows that millennial have arrived its own
culture, from which we can show contemporary dances through our innovative
and advanced technologies.

From Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,

every Filipino must be proud of it having
such culture, festivities and talents that the
other countries idolize. Because with these,
the identity as a Filipino is widely known as
great competitors globally and showing that
we are actually one of a kind.

National Identity through Cultural

Creativity–the theme of competition.
II. INTRODUCTION

There is a thought that says HUMSS students is roughly on hand on their

studies, but an event could break it. They surely know how to sing and dance,
that they also have the moves and the voice. "Sayaw para sa grades, kanta kahit
sintonado, basta makagraduate", one of the student says, but then little by little,
they already enjoyed singing and dancing and notice that they really have the
talents. Aside from the fact that they need to do that, they also enjoyed
showcasing the beauty of different regions, its nativity, genuity and the wonderful
world that one region has.

HUMSS student lately show their talents in dancing and singing last
Sept.19,2017 at exactly 2:00 pm at Biñan Secondary Schools of Applied
Academics-Timbao Campus with the theme "National Identity through Cultural
Creativity".

From the preparation, practices, everyone was busy on how they will let this
all be done and make it happen. Leadership as a choroegrapher, cooperation of
the members, trust and excitement were felt from the very start until the end of
the activity. The long wait was over, finally, for they would show the beauty of their
assigned regions.

"National Identity through Cultural Creativity" was the selected theme for it
shows the different regions, the culture, songs and dances. Truly that a region
could be identified through its wonderful songs and dances.

The said activity was composed of 3 groups with 8 members, each group
has their designated regions. Group 1 was assigned to showcase the song and
dances in Region 1 and NCR, and they showed and picked Modern Dance for
their contemporary dance, Sayaw sa Bangko from Region 1 and Anak by Freddie
Aguilar and Isem as their song.

Group 2 was assigned in Region 2 and 3 and chose music and showcase
the traditional folk dances of both regions which was La Jota and Mais Festival.
They sung Pampanga's Atin Cu Pung Singsing and Leron-Leron Sinta.

Group 3 was assigned to showcase region 4A and 4B songs and dance, they

danced Kumintang, as well as Pandanggo sa Ilaw, which was really quite hard for
a first timer like those students. They also sing Celeste Legazpi's "Mamang
Sorbetero" and Yeng Constantino's Palawan.
After all those dances, songs and competition, the difference between our
cultures, the students were still united and became one when they sing "Piliin mo
ang Pilipinas". Though we are different with one another, still we will be united,
our culture will always bind us, our differences would not be a hindrance once we
showcase our great talents.

A set of days were made for preparations. These include the planning of the
program, practice of the performances, costume designs, props and other
materials.

DAY 1 (SEP. 11) Final Practice and peer-feed

backing and other observations.

DAY 2 (SEP 12) Dress rehearsals.

DAY 3 (SEP 13) Dress rehearsals.

DAY 4 (SEP 18) Dry-run of the program.

There is an order of performance for each of the categories. The group to

open the dance category would perform for the Region 1. The first group to
present in dance would have to perform their second entry after all groups due to
the difference of their entry which is a contemporary dance while all groups have
folk dances as entries in dance category. This is because of the fact that there
are less such dances in the Manila metropolitan region which the group
represents. The second group would represent the North, regions 2 and 3, while
the last would perform for the South, the regions 4-A and B.

The music category also follows the order of the regions. Group 1
wouldbsing for the N.C.R. and region 1. Group 2 would be performing songs from
regions 2 and 3. Lastly, group 3 would perform for the entire region 4. These are
all followed during the practice and preparations, so the actual competition would
have less or no anymore wasted time in transitions.

The following days were devotedly used for dress rehearsals while there
were still groups which had changing entries and steps on their performances
during dress rehearsals. Changes were also made for the program. Meanwhile,
an impending typhoon had suspended the classes for two days and also
contestants in the class for 2017 Division Schools Press Conference were out of
the school for the same days, making the practice not consistent and unstable.
Photos taken on preparation. All groups presented their entries in dance and
music for observation of the teacher (above) and also of the class.

V. COMPETITION
The actual performances are set for the following weeks after drawing of
plans and when it could be possible. The actual date of competition had been
changed for several times because of several circumstances to be considered but
the final date would be on Sep. 18, 2017, the following day of the dry-run.

Several problems were arrived before the onset of the program. At the time
when preparations were complete from the designs, the venue, costume,
audience and the contestants, judges who were invited failed to attend the
contest at 2:00 P.M.bfor their schedule in the school, considering the distance of
the venue at the temporary displacement of Senior High in Biñan Secondary
School of Applied Academics—Timbao Campus, to the main school.

Another one happened was a short blackout that made them to think this
would be all suspended again for another date, but some minutes later, it came
back at the time when the board of judges was completed.

The board of judges was composed of Mrs. Ross Angeline Lumbria, G11–
E.I.M. Adviser and Subject Teacher, as the chairman of the board, Karen Revilla
from G12–I.C.T.-A and Ruziel Gamayot from G11–HUMSS.

The actual competition began almost half an hour of the supposed time. The
program was introduced with a ceremony: a solemn prayer for the competition
and the people composing the entire event that was guided by De La Cruz, and
the singing of national anthem "Lupang Hinirang" that was headed by Baldomino
and Bonita. An opening remarks was made by the class president, John Dave
Mabanta, before the emcees, Miñosa and Katienza, introduced the objectives
and the principles as well as the theme, "National Identity through Cultural
Creativity". Mejia read the criteria for judging the dance entries.

The dance category opened with the folk dance, "Sayaw sa Bangko", a
Pangasinense dance that requires the performers to dance on an elongated
chair. The following group performed the dances of Region 2 and 3, namely, "La
Jota", originated from Isabela that was commonly performed by the upper class in
Spanish era during some feasts or a wedding ceremony, and, "Mais Festival",
dance that is celebrated for it is believed to help the production of corn grow and
harvest more. The final group completed the folk dances with "Kumintang" and
"Pandanggo sa Ilaw" both of which are originated from Southern Tagalog. The
first group who opened the dance category also concluded it with a remix of
modern beats, steps, and movements to become an entry for a contemporary
dance, that would show the popular culture of metropolitan Manila.
An intermission of song by De La Cruz played with a flute by Nagaliza, was
presented for the judges to review the scores. Emcees called for Cala-or to read
the criteria for judging the music entries.

The music category opened with "Ati cu pung singing" and the children-
favorite song "Leron-Leron Sinta" both of which come from Pamoanga. The
followed group sung the lovely and happy Pangasinense song, "Isem" which
means smile. This was followed by their touching and interpretative performance
of undying "Anak" that is origally sung by Freddie Aguilar. The final group
performed the energetic and sweet "Mamang Sorbetero" of legendary Batangas
singer, Celeste Legaspi. They closed the music category with their profound lyric
poem of rap and protest song, "Palawan" which sung by millenials-favorite Yeng
Constantinople and also by rapper Gloc 9.

This was ended with the overall performance of dancing and singing of
cheerful, lively and very nationalistic song "Piliin mo ang Pilipinas" first sung by
Angeline Quinto. An intermission of duet singing by Baldomino and Maturan was
presented for the judges to review the scores.

PERFORMANCE

The program concluded with remarks from Mrs. Lumbria and a message by
Dr. Constante for the success of showcasing the talents and creativity with the
event. Mrs. Lumbria added that aside of gratitude, in behalf of the two judges, for
being part of the event, she was thankful for the Dr. Constante as she is the
person behind, who put the students into a room of challenge and reasonable
competition that would benefit them and also for the country, in keeping the
tradition and arts in modern age.
VI. CONCLUSION

We therefore conclude that through this kind of activity, it helps every student
to nurture their talents, boost their self-esteem and confidence as well as the
group cooperation and teamwork. Through the activity and from the start of their
practice, it helps them to go out of their own boxes nor shall every student has
enjoyed and becomes overwhelmed that they have the guts and knows how to
move, that they also have their talents that they should be proud of.

Through the activity, it gives knowledge and it empowers everyone's

nationalism through dancing and singing. It helps them to have enough
information about the festivities, the culture of different regions.

It also probes that though we are millennial, still with the help of this activity,
we can empower the Philippine culture through folk dance and singing.

VII. RECOMMENDATION

The following are suggestions, things recommended and some points to

consider in conducting such event and for other concerns.

The preparation should be practiced to be limited with a schedule of time and

date for practice, designs, materials and other concerns to make the event easier.

Planning is preferred to be exact. Several additional changes could have

prevented it to be happened because of too much late and too idealistic
objectives for how small or big the event that is also considered.

Complete participants before and during the competition. Cooperation,

teamwork and passion for the work should be recognized throughout an event
that requires competency, creativity and a showcase of talents, by which all
members should possess from practice up to the actual performance.

Budget and resources are also considered for programs like this.

This event should be kept in tradition for Senior High to explore the diversity
of the Filipino while viewing an art.

Students as the educated youth must look for, understand more the
problematic identity of Filipino.
