INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION AND

CONTROL
BVM Engineering College,
Vallabh Vidyanagar,
Anand, Gujarat
Date and Venue
The workshop was organized for 5 days from 2nd January till 6th January 2017. The
workshop was funded by TEQIP –2 program run by the government of India. The
workshop was conducted under the IEEE student chapter of BVM Engg. College.

Training Team
The training team consisted of Engineer Himanshu Kumar and Amit Sir from the
Indwell Corporation, Pune. In order to meet the tight schedule the workshop the
training team arrived on 1st January.

Agenda
The training team agreed to a draft agenda prior to the training workshop, which
was approved by the participants as follows:

Day 1

• Inauguration and introduction to PLC, types of PLC

• Contacts, coil, latch, flag
• PLC scan, pulse, types of pulse

Day 2

• Timer, types of timer, counter and its types

• Different PLC brand software
• Related industrial application

Day 3

• Digital industrial input/outputs and its types

• HMI/MMI introduction, screen development
• PLC HMI interface
• PLC data monitoring and controlling through HMI/MMI
Day 4

• SCADA introduction, drive selection and configuration

• Tag creation and PLC data configuring and controlling through SCADA
• PLC input output wiring concept

Day 5

• AC drive introduction and different motor control parameters

• Project with PLC, HMI, SCADA, AC drive

Training Workshop
63 students of 2nd year Electrical Engineering of Birla Vishwakarma Mahavidyalaya
attended the workshop. The workshop commenced at 10 am in the morning and
adjourned at about 5 pm in the evening, for the next day. The day also included a
lunch break every day for one hour approximately at 1 pm.

Himanshu sir started the daily sessions, with the first half before the break consisting
of theory and the second half after the break mainly consisting of practical sessions.

Day 1:2nd Jan 2017

On the first day, in the beginning, there was an inauguration ceremony in which the
guests were Dr. Indrajit Patel, Dr. A.K.Verma, Dr. B.R.Parekh, and Dr. D.G.Thakore.
We were introduced to the Programmable Logical Controller (PLC) and then we
worked on the “CodeSys” software through which we can program a PLC. The first
half before the lunch included theory lessons on how to use the software while after
the lunch we were doing mostly practical work with the software.

Day 2:3rd Jan 2017

On the second day, we were introduced further regarding programming related
subjects such as ‘Latch, Flag and Timer’ after which we conducted simple practical
application and later proceeded towards higher-level applications on the same.
Though we were taught only few topics, they were taught in detail so it took the
whole day to get a hold on these topics.

Day 3:4th Jan 2017

On the third day, we completed most of the programming related to the PLC by the
introduction of topics such as counter. We learned the application of counter in
detail as it has very important application in the industry also we practiced some
typical problems in which you have to think out of the box and which are very
commonly used in the industry.

Day 4:5th Jan 2017

On the fourth day, we began working on real PLC of Mitsubishi and learned how to
upload the program to a real PLC. A project corresponding to the program was
physically connected and the output was observed. Before concluding the day, we
started working on ‘Human Machine Interface (HMI)’ starting with the introduction
and an HMI was completely created on software.

Day 5:6th Jan 2017

Finally, on the fifth day we completed our training program by enhancing our
knowledge on HMI, Alternating Current Drives and ‘Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition’ (SCADA). The training concluded after finally making a SCADA controlled
system, which can be operated manually as well as remotely. Himanshu sir
understood well the desire of the participants to try some new types on programs
on PLC by implementing them whenever asked, while understanding the weariness
of the students from time to time and giving them sufficient space and breaks.
To wrap it with a bow, the training programming was a good learning experience for
the students and a pleasant experience for both the students and the training
faculty.
