These are difficult times; the world seems to be at war at so many fronts. The New Year had hardly
begun when terror struck Jakarta. We were shocked but not numbed. We all felt we had to work even

Web-based seminars or “ webinars” are especially useful pro-

grams in Indonesia, being the world’s largest archipelago. Webinars
are an excellent platform for sharing information about study and
research in Germany because participants do not have to travel but
can easily participate from their home screen or anywhere comforta-
ble, with a good internet connection. Webinars are usually live and
interactive which allows participants to listen to the presenter and
view the online presentation on computer, without having to be in a
particular office in Jakarta. We organized 25 Webinars on a wide
range of subjects during 2015. Seven of them were in cooperation

in total 2.060 registrations for our webinars during 2015. Most
registrations, 382, were made for our webinar on how to write a pro-
posal for a DAAD scholarship, presented by Dr. Svann Langguth, the Deputy Director of DAAD Regional Office Jakarta. In December
we launched a new webinar format conducted in German for lecturers and students in the field Germanistik. Dr. Marco Stahlhut,
DAAD lecturer at Universitas Indonesia, talked about Indonesia as the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015.

During 2015, in the frame of the SHARE project, DAAD has managed to
implement several key activities in the region focusing on supporting further
development of ASEAN qualification frameworks (QF) and quality assurance
(QA). Working closely with British Council, we have commended the first in a
series of SHARE’s Policy Dialogues (PD) highlighting the importance of
enhancing connectivity and comparability in ASEAN higher education
landscape. Held at the ASEAN Secretariat, this two-day event brought together
high-level education officials, academicians and researchers from ASEAN
member states and Europe as well as relevant donor agencies. PD’s objective
was to tap on synergies and to facilitate exchange of information from ASEAN SHARE Policy Dialogue Part 1 in ASEAN Secretariat in
Jakarta was officially opened by H.E. Alicia Dela Rosa
and Europe. In strengthening synergies, DAAD has set up expert working Bala, ASEAN deputy Secretary General, and Andreas
groups on QF and QA comprising higher education experts from both List, Senior Coordinator for ASEAN
Southeast Asia and Europe. Each expert group convened two times last year,
once back-to-back with Policy Dialogue 1 in Jakarta, and once during the study visit in Europe and meeting in Ghent University.
Together with European University Association (EUA), DAAD has also commissioned three studies on the state of play on QF, QA
and degree structures in the ASEAN region. The final studies are foreseen to be presented at Policy Dialogue 2 in Bangkok, in
February 2016. Lastly, DAAD, EUA and European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) jointly organised
the study visit to Europe aiming to fostering academic dialogue between the EU and ASEAN.

Our newsletter and alumni magazine - NADI (Nachrichten für

Alumni über Deutschland und Indonesien) - covered many of
our events. The NADI issued in 2015 reviewed the DAAD
activities in Indonesia in the past 25 years. Our 3-monthly
newsletter was published in a digital version and NADI in a
print version. Both were sent to our alumni, partner institu-
tions, and people, who are in our mailing list. Facebook and
Twitter are also very important social media tools for
NADI, Facebook and Twitter sharing information. We have at least one post on Facebook
and Twitter everyday. Our Facebook Fans and Twitter
followers have increased every day. Our social media fans are not just from Indonesia, but worldwide. At the end of 2015, the number
of our Facebook fans had risen sharply to 13.690, double the amount compared to last year. Our Twitter followers had risen to 3.974.

European Higher Education Fair 2015 in Three Cities in Indonesia

Just like the previous year, the European Higher Education Fair 2015 was held in three different cities in Indonesia: in Jakarta, in
Yogyakarta, and in Bali. Eleven German universities participated. They were kept busy all day long. There were more than 10.000
visitors in Jakarta, 7.200 visitors in Yogyakarta, and 1.500 visitors in Bali. A day before the event took place, three universities
conducted a webinar hosted by the DAAD Regional Office Jakarta. The German institutions, universities, and consortium that took
part in the EHEF 2015 were: Baden-Württemberg International, DAAD, Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Goethe-
Institut, University of Applied Sciences Wismar, Maritime Research and Training Centre Flensburg, Nuremberg Institute of
Technology, University of Duisburg-Essen, University of Applied Sciences Rhein-Waal, University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-
Schweinfurt, and Technical University Ilmenau.

When Science Talks

Molecular Methods for Plant Breeding.

The Future for Feeding the World or an Ecological Disaster?

Author: Prof. Wolfgang Nellen, University of Kassel

DAAD Quarterly Science Talks in Nov 2015

With still rapidly increasing world populations, food supply

by agriculture has to increase significantly to feed people
and to further decrease world hunger. In western coun-
tries, 60% of food loss is caused by consumers while in
Africa and South-East Asia 60% pre- and post- harvest
losses cause food deficits. This means that improvement
in infrastructure, plant breeding and herbicide-/pest-
management can substantially contribute to food supply
and food security in developing countries.

Plant breeding includes improvement of yield, quality of

yield, resistances against animal, bacterial, viral and plant
pest and plants that can deal with unfavourable conditions
(e.g. climate change).

The valuable gene pool of old, traditional crop variants has to be maintained not only for classical genetics but also for genetic materi-
al that is becoming more and more important for genetic engineering. The new technology of genome editing allows not only for intro-
ducing new traits but also for rapid re-introduction of valuable traits that were accidentally lost during conventional breeding. Modern
cultivars are usually superior to the old, local varieties in terms of yield and quality but they may have lost e.g. disease resistances
that are still present in the old cultivars.

In Europe, especially in Germany, so-called “ecological/organic farming” is considered the strong opposite to genetic engineering.
“Organic farming” is usually more labour intensive, has lower yields and requires more land. But it may be less damaging to the soil
and to ecosystems. Higher prices for so-called “organic products” may result in higher appreciation of food in the developed countries
and thus solve the problem of consumer caused losses. However, lower yields will not feed a growing population in developing coun-
tries. Traditional agriculture, as proposed by some NGOs (and adopted by non-expert government burocrats) will not solve hunger
and malnutrition. On the other hand, huge monocultures will damage ecosystems and soil. It will become absolutely necessary to
combine the advantages of modern biotechnology, conventional breeding and the genetic resources of old cultivars to secure food
supply and achieve sustainable agriculture.

A challenge of the future will be to break up the seemingly (but not in reality!) incompatible differences between “organic farming” and
biotechnology.

Invaluable Working Experience: 13 Years of a Dedicated Journey at DAAD Jakarta

Looking back over my last 13 years, I have no doubt that my job at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta was useful and interesting.

I worked at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta from 2003 until

the end of December 2015. At first I was in charge of the
program „Sur-Place Stipendium - German Industry Scholar-
ship (GIS)“ for the excellence Indonesian students at the
top 5 Indonesian universities, and „Sur-Place Stipendium
SP Indonesien Flut—BMZ und SV Mittel“ for the tsunami
victims 2004 in Aceh. As time went by I had the responsibi-
lity to manage „Hochschulsommerkurs“ - the summer
course program in Germany for the Indonesian students of
German studies -, DIES (Dialogue on Innovative Higher
Me (pink hijab) during DIES Program in Yogyakarta, in 2014
Education Strategies) programs such as IDC (International
Deans‘ Course), Unilead, Unitrace, Training of Trainers, Proposal Writing and National Leaders' Course, for the management and
decision makers of higher education institution, and postgraduate courses or scholarships for professionals.

During the past 13 years of my dedicated journey at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta I have gained invaluable working experience and
fruitful knowledge in the field of higher education. I also had the opportunity to meet and work together with professional individuals.
My eyes are now wide open and I know for sure that Indonesia has numerous experts in their fields. And, last but not least, many
thanks to the current director of DAAD Regional Office Jakarta, Dr. Irene Jansen, for your support and also the other colleagues at the
office whom I have had the pleasure to work with. It was truly so sad to leave, but life goes on! Goodbye DAAD!

Warm regards, Dwi Nurlianti!

Nicole Hanke Shares Her Experience During Her Internship at DAAD Jakarta
My name is Nicole, I am 24 years old and had interned for the DAAD Jakarta office
from August until October 2015. I recently received my bachelor degree in social
science from the University of Marburg. Before starting with my Master program in
International Development Studies, I wanted to gain more practical experience related
to my studies in the framework of an internship abroad. Therefore, the DAAD was an
excellent choice.

During my internship in the regional office, I had the opportunity to help preparing and

At DAAD booth in an education fair in Surabaya attending many different events like education fairs and information seminars that
were organized by the DAAD. Furthermore, I helped the DAAD with contents for the
website and was able to create a short movie about interns at the regional office in Jakarta.

Honestly speaking, I am very sad to leave this amazing archipelago with the friendliest people, most delicious food and stunning
beauty of nature. As I kind of fell in love with this country during my experiences here, I have the feeling that I owe this country much
more additional time. So, see you again next time in Indonesia!
