During 2015, in the frame of the SHARE project, DAAD has managed to
implement several key activities in the region focusing on supporting further
development of ASEAN qualification frameworks (QF) and quality assurance
(QA). Working closely with British Council, we have commended the first in a
series of SHARE’s Policy Dialogues (PD) highlighting the importance of
enhancing connectivity and comparability in ASEAN higher education
landscape. Held at the ASEAN Secretariat, this two-day event brought together
high-level education officials, academicians and researchers from ASEAN
member states and Europe as well as relevant donor agencies. PD’s objective
was to tap on synergies and to facilitate exchange of information from ASEAN SHARE Policy Dialogue Part 1 in ASEAN Secretariat in
Jakarta was officially opened by H.E. Alicia Dela Rosa
and Europe. In strengthening synergies, DAAD has set up expert working Bala, ASEAN deputy Secretary General, and Andreas
groups on QF and QA comprising higher education experts from both List, Senior Coordinator for ASEAN
Southeast Asia and Europe. Each expert group convened two times last year,
once back-to-back with Policy Dialogue 1 in Jakarta, and once during the study visit in Europe and meeting in Ghent University.
Together with European University Association (EUA), DAAD has also commissioned three studies on the state of play on QF, QA
and degree structures in the ASEAN region. The final studies are foreseen to be presented at Policy Dialogue 2 in Bangkok, in
February 2016. Lastly, DAAD, EUA and European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) jointly organised
the study visit to Europe aiming to fostering academic dialogue between the EU and ASEAN.
The valuable gene pool of old, traditional crop variants has to be maintained not only for classical genetics but also for genetic materi-
al that is becoming more and more important for genetic engineering. The new technology of genome editing allows not only for intro-
ducing new traits but also for rapid re-introduction of valuable traits that were accidentally lost during conventional breeding. Modern
cultivars are usually superior to the old, local varieties in terms of yield and quality but they may have lost e.g. disease resistances
that are still present in the old cultivars.
In Europe, especially in Germany, so-called “ecological/organic farming” is considered the strong opposite to genetic engineering.
“Organic farming” is usually more labour intensive, has lower yields and requires more land. But it may be less damaging to the soil
and to ecosystems. Higher prices for so-called “organic products” may result in higher appreciation of food in the developed countries
and thus solve the problem of consumer caused losses. However, lower yields will not feed a growing population in developing coun-
tries. Traditional agriculture, as proposed by some NGOs (and adopted by non-expert government burocrats) will not solve hunger
and malnutrition. On the other hand, huge monocultures will damage ecosystems and soil. It will become absolutely necessary to
combine the advantages of modern biotechnology, conventional breeding and the genetic resources of old cultivars to secure food
supply and achieve sustainable agriculture.
A challenge of the future will be to break up the seemingly (but not in reality!) incompatible differences between “organic farming” and
biotechnology.

During the past 13 years of my dedicated journey at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta I have gained invaluable working experience and
fruitful knowledge in the field of higher education. I also had the opportunity to meet and work together with professional individuals.
My eyes are now wide open and I know for sure that Indonesia has numerous experts in their fields. And, last but not least, many
thanks to the current director of DAAD Regional Office Jakarta, Dr. Irene Jansen, for your support and also the other colleagues at the
office whom I have had the pleasure to work with. It was truly so sad to leave, but life goes on! Goodbye DAAD!
Nicole Hanke Shares Her Experience During Her Internship at DAAD Jakarta
My name is Nicole, I am 24 years old and had interned for the DAAD Jakarta office
from August until October 2015. I recently received my bachelor degree in social
science from the University of Marburg. Before starting with my Master program in
International Development Studies, I wanted to gain more practical experience related
to my studies in the framework of an internship abroad. Therefore, the DAAD was an
excellent choice.
During my internship in the regional office, I had the opportunity to help preparing and
At DAAD booth in an education fair in Surabaya attending many different events like education fairs and information seminars that
were organized by the DAAD. Furthermore, I helped the DAAD with contents for the
website and was able to create a short movie about interns at the regional office in Jakarta.
Honestly speaking, I am very sad to leave this amazing archipelago with the friendliest people, most delicious food and stunning
beauty of nature. As I kind of fell in love with this country during my experiences here, I have the feeling that I owe this country much
more additional time. So, see you again next time in Indonesia!
