PROPOSAL FOR INTEGRATED DESIGN PROJECT (IDP)

BMCU 3013, Sem. 2 Session 2017/2018

Section 06 Lecturers:
Muhd Ridzuan Mansor, Dr. (Group Coordinator)
Rafidah binti Hassan, Dr.
Adnan bin Roseli, Dr.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Integrated Design Project is a subject that integrate all aspects of design that fulfil the customers’ and
end users’ needs. These needs include functionality, appearance, strength, user friendly, environmental
friendly, light weight, easy handling, compact, efficient, cost saving, life span, etc. While the needs for
business persons are marketability, relaibility, profitability, branding, warranty etc.

2.0 GROUP BASED IDP PROJECT

The IDP is a group based project of maximum 5 students and not less than 4 students. The groups will
be supervised and monitored by a lecturer who at the same time incharged for several other groups. The
supervisor shall guide them by counceling them how to start and how to proceed and what kind of result
is required. However the supervisor is not allowed to decide on behalf of the students so that the students
learn from their own findings and mistakes.
The supervisor only answer the questions from the students and help them to understand what is the
consecquences if they do this and do that. The supervisor could also suggest to the students several
testing methods for the student to choose which suitable to their capability and resources not dictating
the method to choose.

3.0 THEME OF THE IDP

The theme of IDP for this semester is “Unmanned Motorised Vehicle with Vertical Lifting
Mechanism”. The students shall be encouraged to manipulate used or recycled materials for
the prototype fabrication but having sufficient strength to deliver the required function with
high reliability. Unmanned means the vehicle is not driven by human or not supposed to
accomodate human on it. It is operated by a wired ON-OFF-REVERSE switches. Its movement
is only straight movement thus no need to have ability to do cornering or curvy movement. The
minimum load that the vehicle should be able to carry is 10kg. Vertical Lifting Mechanism shall
enable the 10 kg load to be lifted to a height of 2.6 m from the ground level. The load must be
lifted vertically with an allowance of inclination angle not limiting to 7 degree angle with
respect to the vertical gravity line. Both the Vehicle power unit and the Verticle Lifting
Mechanism power unit shall be driven by a d.c. motor with sufficient appropriate gearing
system.
4.0 EVALUATION AND GRADING

The supervisor shall evaluate a portion of the project mark beside external evaluator. The grade will be
given for several aspects such as brilliat conceptual design, complete detailed design, design analysis,
material and structural decisions, functionality, report writing, presentation, mass mmanufacturing
design, team working, etc.
The grading will be made systematically using a specially designed evaluation forms with reference to
the rubrics that provided within the form.

The Grading shall be as follows:-

4.1 GRADING FOR THE PROTOTYPE PERFORMANCE
Each group must make sure their prototype is perfectly ready to be tested by the evaluation panel during
the FKM design day exhibition. Their prototypes shall be tested for its performance for the following
criteria:-
1. Functional design concept with safety features
2. Traveling distance 10 meter forward and backward (total distance 20 m)
3. Traveling speed for 10 meter tarveling ( average of speed for 20 m distance)
4. Smoothness of vehicle traveling movement (i.e low noise, no jerking, no stuck up)
5. Traveling distance for vertical movement of 2.6 m up and down (total distance 5.2 m)
6. Traveling speed for vertical movement of 2.6 m (2 readings, going up and going down)
7. Smoothness of vertical movement of the mechanism (i.e. low noise, no jerking, no stuck up)
8. Inclination angle of the vertical lifting structure with respect to gravity line (not more than 10
degree)
9. Compactness and Finishing quality of the prototype
