Panui Ruma 12 Term 1 - No 1

Kia ora Koutou,

Nau mai haere mai. We would like to welcome you all to Ruma 12.

We are spending the first week getting to know one another, the class
routines and revisiting our 5Cs. After the first week, we will be moving into our
weekly timetable (see below).
Our first topic is entitled
“Survivor”. We are spending
the first two weeks learning different survival skills; everything from
water safety in the pool to building a bivouac!. After this we will then
be looking into the Survival of the planet and inquiring into our impact
as humans on the lifecycle of nature. We will be looking at our role as guardians of the land - Katiakitanga.

Kia Ora students, whanau and friends of Room 12.
My family and I have returned to Waiheke to live in the
house my father-in-law built in the 1970’s. I am thrilled
to be working at Te Huruhi - the school my
mother-in-law taught at when it was an Area School!
My whanau are loving being here, our 2 girls both
attending Waiheke High School.
I have come from teaching in a Special Needs Unit in
Hawkes Bay and have enjoyed teaching children at
varied stages of their learning journey.
Everybody is awesome at something. I am passionate
about individuals finding and reaching their potential;
being the best they can be! Whaea Fhi and I have
planned a fantastic start to our year and look forward
to meeting Room 12 students for 2018 and their
whanau.
My interests include kayaking, swimming, art, reading
and exploring with my family.
I look forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks
and am excited
to be a part of
your children's
learning here
at Te Huruhi.
I love all things musical and sporty! …. which has been
my downfall in the past year as I have broken so many
bits of my body doing the things I love! I have been the
school’s lead teacher for Literacy, Maths, The Arts,
Science and Behaviour. This year I am the Team Leader
for Sky Syndicate and for our Positive Behaviour
programme and am on the Maori development team.
I have taught at every level in school from New Entrants
to Year 8 over the years but I really love teaching Year 5
and 6 as they are at an age where they ask some
searching questions and also still love entering into the
world of makebelieve and using their imaginations. I
can’t wait to be teaching many students again from last
year and getting to know the passions of everyone
who’s new to the class.
Swimming​ –​ Children need to bring their togs
everyday. We are fortunate to have specialist tuition
from the Swim Waiheke Teachers.
Swimming is compulsory unless a child brings a written
exemption note from a parent/carer.’
Hats:​ A​ ll children must be wearing a wide brim hat at
school. All hats must be named. School hats are
available for sale at the office. Students without hats will
not be allowed to play outside at break times as the UV
rays are too dangerous.
Home Learning: ​The children will bring home a
sheet with home learning activities for the next six
weeks. They will also be on the school website and
emailed home. Please send in a letter if you do not wish
your child to be doing home learning as per our
school policy.
Cyber safety and Class Weebly 
Just a reminder that you will have already filled in the
Cyber Safety form. We will be going through internet
safety with the children. Please, could you also talk to
your child at home about the importance of this. Please
inform us if you do not give permission for your child’s
photo to be on the class website. The class website link

School Bus:​ ​ Students who are travelling on the bus
regularly will be put onto the bus roll. If a child needs to
catch a bus as a one off they must bring a letter on the
day to let the teacher know. Where written notification
is not provided, children will not be able to catch the bus.
PLEASE ensure your child has enough credit on their
HOP card or cash fare for the bus.
They will be unable to catch the
bus if they do not have this
Assemblies:​ ​ Whole school assemblies are on
Friday’s at 9.50am on ODD weeks. Sky assemblies are
on Friday’s on EVEN weeks. We will endeavour to let you
know if your child is performing in any way. You are
more than welcome to join us for these assemblies.

Class Band: ​Practices will be on Fridays so if your
child is able to bring their instrument (guitar, ukulele,
violin, flute) to school on Friday it would be fantastic.
Parent Help:​ W ​ e always need parents to read one
to one with children. We are happy to fit this around
times you are available. It could be first thing in the
morning or just before the end of the day. Do you have a
talent that you would like to share with us? Or come
and teach us? Come and let us know – we have a lot of
talented parents and whanau - the students could
really benefit from your expertise.
Lost property:​ ​ Please ensure all your child’s
clothing is labelled.

Library: O ​ ur library day is Friday and students can
take their chosen book home for the week. Please
ensure they bring them back
for their library session the
following week. If you have any
outstanding books (or reading
books from the Resource
Room) we would really
appreciate if you could send
them in. The school lost $1500
of resources in books going home last year.
Leadership Responsibilities: ​ ​Children have
the option of becoming Peer Supporters, PE monitors,
Road Patrollers, Librarians and Enviromonitors. These
are great opportunities for children to develop their
commitment and responsibility. Please talk with your
child about taking on one of these. Children can also
become Pupil councillors. CVs and application letters
need to be in to Mrs Parlane for 23rd February.
Garden to Table:​ ​Year 5s will be participating in
this programme. Every second Tuesday morning from
8.30 - 10.30, Year 5 children will be learning in the
garden and the kitchen.
  
Children eat food at 10.30am and 12.50pm each day.
This is the beginning of the break time and the END of
the lunchtime. Please ensure your child has enough
food at school for the day.
