If ou know how to create a walking a line, ou can e more creative in our jazz plaing. A walking a line i a more creative form of a plaing
than the other wing tle ecaue ou chooe new note each time ou pla the ame ong.

A walking a line impl walk through the appropriate cale of each chord, one note per eat, hitting ever eat of each meaure. The walking a
line wa developed  upright ait like Ra rown, Milt Hinton, Paul Chamer, and Ron Carter, ut now it’ alo commonl plaed on the a
guitar.

Creating a walking a line i one of the more eluive art form in the a world, ut if ou undertand how to put it together, tep  tep (pun
intended), it won’t eem o frightening. The formula for a ucceful walking a line i imple:

1 eat One: Determine the chord tonalit (major, minor, dominant, or half-diminihed) and pla the root of that chord.

2 eat Two: Pla an chord tone of the chord, or an note in the cale related to that chord.

3 eat Three: Pla an chord tone or cale tone of the chord.

4 eat Four: Pla a leading tone to the next root.
A leading tone lead from one chord to the next. The leading tone prepare the litener’ ear for the ound of the new chord. The mot
important point to undertand aout a leading tone i that it aim for the following chord’ root. For example, if ou’re going from a C chord to
an F chord, our leading tone lead to F (never mind the C).
Leading tone come in three tpe:

Chromatic (half-tep)

Diatonic (cale)

Dominant (the 5 of the new chord)

lue in C, jut move the whole pattern up two fret (toward the ridge of the a) and tart our  rt note on C.

 the wa, plaing thi pattern i ea (depite the complex ound) ecaue ou don’t have to hift our left hand. Jut make ure that ou tart the
pattern with our middle  nger.
